The muse behind Forever Man

My name is January Bain and I love to write. There, I’ve confessed my addiction! And now my first book has just been released and I would dearly love to share my storytelling journey with you.

Where did the idea come from? I remember it as clear as if the moment had just happened: I was watching The Green Mile, and was mesmerized by the idea that the gentle giant, imprisoned unfairly in jail for a crime committed by an another, could heal others by taking on their illness and then just letting the evil flow back into obscurity by exhaling through his lungs.

I coveted that gift with every fiber of my being. I had just lost two beloved brothers to cancer and had to stand by and watch it happen.

My heroine, Ellie Hightower, was going to have it so much better than me! She was going to have the gift of healing and save those she loved. I know why I write romantic stories—the happy, guaranteed ending.

It’s been an interesting journey, this getting a book polished and ready to be published. Though the learning curve has been pretty steep, I have had the blessing of working with great people who have made the journey a whole lot easier. A special thanks to my wonderful editor, Judy Griffith Gill and her expertise. She has made me a far better writer.

And to all my wonderful friends at The Writers Vineyard, your support and friendship has meant more to me than you can know!

I would also like to thank J. Ellen Smith, our esteemed publisher for her invaluable guidance in getting my first novel to the public.

And most of all, my very own “Forever Man”, my wonderful husband, Don, who has made the journey of life the best it can be!

Excerpt from FOREVER MAN:

Prologue

Pure evil waited, hushed and cold in the perfect darkness. The steady drip, drip on the coffin lid above was soundless next to the crashing waves of the sea. But the creature within was aware and knew what the substance was: life-giving nourishment.

The blood was pooling, seeking a way into any tiny fissure that it could search out with thin hungry fingers. The resurrection was painstaking. Each life-giving drop dripped onto the needy beast which absorbed each molecule like a monstrous sponge as it built up, layer by layer.

The vampire waited patiently—certain of its imminent resurrection.
After all, it had already waited centuries, what were a few more hours to recover what had been lost…

Excerpt Two:

Please God, let this beautiful creature be okay.
A surge of pure power seemed to drive through my hands into the dog as I concentrated my thoughts on it and then all I could see and feel was hot, white light surrounding me for a few brief incredibly thrilling seconds.

The light blinded me, its power as strong as the noonday sun. A sense of pure aliveness electrified me, as if I was at the pinnacle of my strength and could rise up and fill the world with goodness and healing. Then, just as suddenly, the floodgates in my mind closed and the white hot energy retreated back into my hands that began to shake violently with the excess energy.

The sensation left as abruptly as it had come and I fell back exhausted from the effort. The dog whimpered, shook itself and sat up. It looked at the two of us as if nothing had happened, its brown eyes shining and its tail wagging as if it didn’t even remember the last few minutes of its life.

The woman, her eyes huge in her round face, looked at me with complete wonder. “How could this be? One minute I thought it was dying, then you came along and now it’s up and fine? It doesn’t make any sense.” The woman shook her head, unwilling to believe her own eyes.

Champagne Books releases FOREVER WOMAN October 1, 2012

It is hard to be human which is maybe why I like to immerse myself in imaginative vampire lore. And immerse myself I do. I’ve lived their lives 24/7 as I get the gift of experiencing the richness of this parallel world.

Okay, my human life probably suffers for my obsession at times, but fortunately I have a loving, tolerant husband and three independent cats that like to watch me tap away at the computer. I think they find the rhythm of the keystrokes soothing—just my take as I used to like the sound of my grandma’s knitting needles clicking away while I sat beside her. I even used that memory in my third book, Forever Clan, for the heroine’s Scottish ma.

But I digress. Why is it so hard to be human? Well, we cannot heal ourselves as quickly as vampires can. Imagine being healed overnight as you sleep from a wound that would kill a mortal. I’d like that gift! And for those of you that know me well, you can imagine how I would want to share the gift of healing after reading my first novel in the series, Forever Man.

Vampires have it better on the strength side of the equation also. A drink of blood and they are full of energy. And if the blood comes from a blood bank concoction there would be little guilt, I’m just saying…

Vampires can shape-shift at will. Not a bad ability to have. Imagine the havoc one could bring to bullies, child molesters, murderers and other such evil people.

Vampires can live forever. Okay, this sounds good but what about the fact that if you have regrets in life you have to live with them FOREVER. But then maybe vampires (at least the uncivilized ones) don’t carry this guilt. But mine do for the most part, so maybe it’s also hard to be a vampire at times. But they can’t complain too much as they get to live forever, for heaven’s sake!

I hope you follow the journey of my vampires, angels, and Fae that exist in the pages of the Forever Series. Forever Man was released by Champagne Books in July 2012 and Forever Woman will be on October 1st, with Forever Clan in January 2013. I love to hear from readers and writers alike!

Excerpt from Forever Woman being released October 1, 2012:

Prologue

The murmur of voices was silenced in an instant by the ancient magistrate’s unearthly cold stare as he stood with full authority, blacked-hooded and paper-white, and read from the book of punishments, his voice heralding the full power of the Condita, the Vampire Establishment.

“It is our character and our will that makes and mars our lives. Your defense that you were not aware of the edict against Human feeding falters as it does not justify the excessive crime of random acts of terror against humans. Modern Vampire lore is clear on this point, as it is written.”

And with a short pause for emphasis, continued his diatribe in the echoing tone of an inhuman mountain of stone. The more astute members of his audience felt an infinitesimal flicker of his savoring the silence before his final pronouncement began.

“Therefore, it is the verdict of this court that the vampyre, Katrianna Ivanski, in absentia, for her crimes against the Condita, be chained for no less than twenty four hours to the punishment polus in the central courtyard of the templum. May the Confuto have mercy on your undead soul.”

2topian view of our planet Earth

Happy Sunday Everyone,

Got a really early start due to the time change so five was really four o'clock in the morning!

THE PERFECT STORM stands at 36,507 at this brief moment in time.

Cullen Goodman, the hero of my work-in-progress, is in the process of telling his parents that he has fallen in love with an Earthling. Horror of horrors!

Un-edited Excerpt of The Perfect Storm:

“Yes, I’ve fallen in love and married a woman. Lily Stewart to be exact.”

His father closed his eyes for a moment as if gathering himself and for the first time Cullen could see that he had aged. 2topians live far longer than the people of Earth thanks to so many advances in health care, but they were not immortal and could expect to live one hundred and seventy years at best. Every life form on all life-giving planets, of which there were too many to count in the cosmos, had the same curious feature that though they promoted life, they were even better at extinguishing it. And so many had totally extinguished theirs by not getting their act together in time to prevent total alienation. Thank God there was still hope for Earth. But knowing he would very likely live longer on Earth than Lily was not something he was prepared to dwell on. It would be his job to convince her to live on 2topia and avail herself of their advancements. And perhaps the two of them, along with Mathew and Jasmine and others that would band with them in the future could help this population…

“It’s insanity to think that this won’t lead to your undoing, Cullen. Did Tiber not teach you anything?”

“He was a good teacher. Things changed when I met Lily. I saw reason—that it is wrong what we are doing here. And I’m not the only one.”

“Who else, Cullen?”

He looked at his father, wondering how much he should say as his mother came into the room. Eying them both, she sat down on a chair close by and shook her head at Cullen’s offer of a drink.

“I’m fine. Now, what’s been shared between the two of you?”

“Your son has fallen in love with a human!”

Forever Angel (Forever #4) is released today!

Hi all, Champagne Books published my fourth book in the Forever Series today. Forever Angel (Forever, #4) by January Bain

Excerpt:

You’ll like Julie. She’s a very nice small-town girl from halfway around the world who needs a change of scenery. Promise me that you’ll show her a good time while she’s here, Jax. She knows nothing about our being vampire and since you’re a Daywalker you’re our only hope in keeping her suspicions at bay, though with her sister-in-law Ellie being a true healer she might have a more open mind than most.

That was his ma’s words just one week ago and here he was heading for the airport to pick up that bit of baggage, dutiful son that he was. He snorted in derision, remembering how absolutely unimpressed he was to be the official escort of someone—he almost used the word hick but thought better of it—from Nome, Alaska. And to think he had important plans this week—lord knows time was the one thing he did not have enough of and what little he had certainly did not include chaperoning a Miss Julie Stone through the tourist spots of Luxor. He ran his hands through hair that the sun had bleached to a burnished gold, his azure blue eyes glinting angrily in his tanned face, the chiseled jaw-line tightening from the momentary annoyance.

1. What am I working on?

Experimental Eve, a science fiction novel. I’m hoping to write a crossover novel at some point during my writing career. By this I mean a book that speaks across the genres and to a wider audience. I hope that this new book might be a possible contender. I just finished writing, The Cinderella Proposition and The Virgin Lottery, both contemporary new adult.

2. How does my work differ from others of its genre?

For Experimental Eve, I think its biggest difference is that it’s truly an experiment! I’m bringing together an Ice Queen heroin, an alien protagonist that could easily exist, and a catastrophe of epic proportions that has occurred on another exoplanet outside our solar system making Earth a target. To up the game I’m writing half from the alien’s point of view and the other half (interspaced by chapters beginning with their names) from the human’s point of view. It’s also very humorous due to the misunderstanding in the two planet’s cultures and traditions.

3. Why do I write what I do?

I cannot imagine not writing in every possible moment. Writing is my life. Beginning a new book is the same endorphin rush for me as falling in love.

4. How does my writing process work?

My writing is always either on the front of my brain, or swirling around at the back waiting for time to write. The more you write the more it finds you. I’ve never been one to wait for their muse to strike, but get myself there by dedication and persistence. If you sit down to write I guarantee something good will happen.

Magic Powers

I began writing because I desperately craved having a magic power. And that theme has come out time and again in my novels. It’s allowed me to build worlds in ways that have satisfied my need to feel this power albeit through my characters.

What is this power you ask? The power I most want is the power to heal another person. Not cutting into them like a surgeon or the dispensing of drugs, but laying on of hands to send the “powers of light” coursing into them and have them heal from the inside out. As if the condition had never existed in the first place.

The first time I used this power of healing was in the novel, Forever Man, when my heroine healed her man to save the day. The second was in Blood Moon Justice where the heroine’s powers had been expanded to include not only healing, but telepathy and telekinesis. That gal was so good she worked in a bar and could stop a drink from hitting the floor and saving the cleanup! I so enjoy strong heroines. They need kick-ass attitude and have abilities I don’t have to make the journey with them satisfying for me. And in my imagination, that’s just so easy and so much fun to do.

I look forward, with pleasure, to reading about other author’s super power choices.
Best,
January Bain

20 books and counting!

Hello fellow book lovers,

What an amazing journey I've been on these past few years. Reading, researching and writing every moment I can. My life is blessed as I share these words. I've written thousands of words each week and they have accumulated into twenty plus novels. All kinds of genres are represented, from purely romance, to horror, to science fiction, to adventure and I have even written spicy tomes! I wish for all lovers of the written word such a journey. Please share with me your journey if you'd like by commenting. Thanks and have a great day. Hugs, January
