“What is your name?” Rachel asked.
“Tobias Whetherford Ramsey III,” he answered with a haughty tone.
“Well, Toby, I dare you to put a frog or worm in my lunchpail,” Rachel said. “You won’t hear me scream when I see it and I might just find something else to put into yours.” Rachel gave a sharp nod and turned on her heel.
Toby grabbed her arm as she stalked away.
“Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, calls me Toby!” he hissed.
“Why not?” Rachel asked.
“Because if they do, I beat them up. My name’s Tobias and that’s what I’ll be called.”
“If you say so,” Rachel replied. “So what are you going to do now? Beat me up for calling you Toby twice in as many minutes?”
Toby ground his teeth together and gripped her arm tighter. Rachel made a concerted effort to show no pain and keep eye contact with this bully.
“Leave her alone, Tobias!” another voice cut in.
“Stay outta this, Jenkins!” Tobias warned.
“Rachel, get away from here,” the voice Rachel now recognized as John’s said.
“I can’t,” Rachel said through gritted teeth. “Toby is trying to see if his hand will go through my arm.”
“James, go get Mr. Matthews and tell him a fight’s about to start and I’m starting it. Kind of.” John took a step forward. “I’m giving you one more chance to let Rachel go, Toby. If you don’t do it in the next ten seconds, I’ll make you let go of her.”
Tobias’s eyes flitted from one cousin to the other. Rachel and John both glared at him.
“10…9…8…7…6…5…4…3…2…1. Time’s up, Toby.” John swung his left fist in the direction of Toby’s head. He knew he was taking a chance of hitting Rachel with the punch instead, but counted on Toby letting go of Rachel so he could block the blow and Rachel’s quick thinking to move out of the way.
While his left fist headed toward Toby’s head, he readied his right fist to hit the boy from a different angle as soon as the first blow was blocked. John breathed easier as his assumptions proved correct when Tobias let go of Rachel and Rachel ducked out of the way. John’s punch came to a halt on Toby’s arm, but his right fist followed quickly and hit the other boy in the left ear causing Tobias to stagger backwards half a pace.
It only took Tobias a few seconds to recover and then he went after John with a vengeance. Just before Toby’s fist reached John, the teacher stepped in between the two boys and took the blow for John.
“That is enough, you two.” He took hold of Tobias’s arm and spun around to face John and the rest of the schoolchildren. “What is going on here?”
Rachel stepped forward. “It’s my fault, Mr. Matthews. I didn’t do what Tobias asked.”
“That’s not true!” John demanded. “Toby wanted her to tell him why Uncle Caleb married her ma and she didn’t want to tell him. Then he threatened to put a frog or worm in her lunch.”
“To which I replied I would put something in his lunch,” Rachel interrupted.
“And then she asked my name and promptly called me Toby,” Tobias cut in.
Mr. Matthews looked at Tobias. “In other words, you started it by trying to bully Rachel.”
Tobias glared at the teacher. “No, I didn’t. I just wanted an answer to my question and she wouldn’t give it.”
“So you grabbed her arm when she tried to walk away and she’ll probably have a bruise there tomorrow,” John protested. “Way to go, Toby.”
“You call me that again,” Tobias threatened, “and I’ll knock your block off.”
“Go ahead and try!” John replied.
“Cut it out, you two!” Mr. Matthews said. “You’re both going to stay here after school and we’ll talk about this at that time.”

Kim McMahill I am thrilled to announce the release of my second novel in the Risky Research Series, A Taste of Tragedy The first was A Dose of Danger, the third is in the early stages of being written, and the fourth is still in my head. I’m not sure at this point how far the series will go. I’m assuming the characters will let me know when it’s time to wrap it up. “Here, let me help you,” Morgan said as she draped Devyn’s arm around her shoulders.
Morgan tried to relieve as much weight as she could from Devyn as she helped her hobble to the waiting vehicle. Once Devyn was seated in the cramped back seat, Morgan dug out her emergency supply bag. She handed Devyn a blanket and a bottle of water. “I have a first aid kit, but I think you need something a little more than a bandage.”
“It’s just a few scratches. I’ll live.”
Morgan could see why Nick trusted Devyn with his back. As she looked at the battered and bruised woman, who had taken off into the desert in the middle of the night in bare feet to prevent a criminal from getting away, she had to admire her. Devyn had to be in extreme pain, yet not a complaint escaped her lips.
“Make room in the back,” Nick huffed.
Morgan looked up to see Nick trudging toward her with an inert Aaron slung over his shoulder. She raced to the tiny back cargo area and moved a few items around so Nick could squeeze the body in the vehicle.
“Is he dead?” Morgan whispered.
“Not quite, but we need to get him medical help A.S.A.P. The bullet didn’t hit any vital organs, but I’m not sure how much damage he suffered from the knock to the head”
Morgan watched as Nick set the man down in the vehicle, and then she joined Devyn in the back seat. Turning around and kneeling, she was able to lean over the seat and assess Aaron’s injuries. She folded up a handkerchief and placed it over Aaron’s gunshot wound and applied pressure. She wasn’t sure which was bleeding more, the bullet hole or the bump and cut to the head, but she had to try and slow the blood loss any way she could.
“That’s all we can do for now,” Nick said. “Just keep the pressure on the best you can.”
Morgan nodded as Nick secured the back and then got behind the wheel.
“You okay?” Nick asked as he turned to face Devyn.
“I’ve had better days, but sadly, I’ve had worse.”

Kim McMahill grew up in Wyoming, which is where she developed her sense of adventure and love of the outdoors. Kim started out writing non-fiction, but her passion for exotic world travel, outrageous adventures, stories of survival, and happily-ever-after endings soon drew her into a world of romantic suspense. Along with writing adventure novels Kim has also published over eighty travel and geographic articles, and contributed to a travel anthology and cookbook.
