Alana was raised in Duluth. Then she got a degree in history and moved to Seattle, where she worked her way through the film, internet, and health insurance industries. Then she moved to Scotland, where she worked in clinical research. But no one in Scotland wanted to give her a permanent job because she's a fat foreigner, so she became a freelance writer. Her house is poorly insulated and has no functional central heating, so there is a good chance that she is currently very cold. ...more

Reading goals for 2015

2015 is going to have to be better than 2014 was. I did not have a good year, and not just because I failed to reach my reading goal.

Because of personal problems and general ill mental health, I expect to be doing a lot of re-reading of books I've already read especially for the first part of the year.

I guess I'm doing comfort reading instead of reading new stuff. But it's what I have to do right Read more of this blog post »

“Like everywhere else in the world, the book stores of Britain are struggling with being pushed out of the market by online booksellers. The most popular book store chain in the UK is Waterstones. They are closing locations and cutting back as they lost business, but they aren't losing business as fast and as hard as the book stores in the US. There is one reason for this: sales. If you go into a book store in the UK, you will be greeted by tables covered with bestsellers and crime novels and other popular books, stacked high with signs saying “3 for £10”. Take heed, American booksellers: people buy more things when you lower the price sometimes. People love a special offer.”

“Fruitcake: In America we have come to an understanding about fruitcake. Fruitcake is a gift given by and to elderly aunts. They give it to you because they think you must like it because you gave one to them. You give it to them because you think they must like fruitcake because they are elderly and lost their tastebuds in the war.”
Alana Muir, An American Guide to Britishness

“Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.”
Albert Einstein

“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”
Oscar Wilde

“Friendship ... is born at the moment when one man says to another "What! You too? I thought that no one but myself . . .”
C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves

“I am so clever that sometimes I don't understand a single word of what I am saying.”
Oscar Wilde, The Happy Prince and Other Stories

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”
Martin Luther King Jr., A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches
