“What’s wrong?” Lane ran his thumb over my cheek.

“I wish… I just…” I frowned, trying to find the words I wanted. “I want to go home. I want to go check on Iggy. I want this to be a really bad and really long nightmare. I wish that instead of being in the truck, we were on our couch. You’d be sitting with your legs stretched out and I’d be lying on your lap. We could watch a movie. We’d be having a beer and nachos… I’d kill for a fucking beer right now.” I stopped my rambling to swallow down the lump forming in my throat.

“It will be okay.” He pressed his lips to my forehead. “I don’t know what the fuck is going on, but someone will figure it out and they’ll find a way to fix it. We’re safe here for now.” He maneuvered over the shift stick settled himself beside me. I laid my head against his shoulder and closed my eyes as he smoothed my hair.

“Lane?”

“Hmmm?”

I looked up at him and raised a hand to touch his cheek. My heart skipped, my lips brushed over his, and I took a deep breath. I remembered all those times I’d told him, but at the same time hadn’t told him. I decided that from now on, for whatever time we had left, he’d know.

“I love you, Lane. Always have.”

His smile melted every bone in my body. “I love you, Gabrielle. Always will.”

“He took my hand and stopped walking then shook his head when I looked up at him. “Look, I didn’t want to do this on your birthday, but this isn’t working out.”

I raised an eyebrow at him. No shit, Sherlock. I waited for him to continue.

“This whole arrangement with you and Lane, it’s weird. You’re not kids anymore. I can put up with your choice of livelihood. Hell, I can even get used to the fact that you refuse to do yourself up in the morning before I wake up when you spend the night.” He paused at my frown. “But I won’t play second place man in a woman’s life. If you want to have any chance with me, you’re going to have to leave him. Move out; get your own place. Just quit having him around all the time.”

“If I want to have a chance with you?” Wow, this man was a piece of work. I gazed over to Lane who didn’t look too happy as he watched what was happening. I turned back to Brian. “But who would get custody of Iggy? We can’t do that to him. It would break his fragile little heart! And joint custody won’t work. We can’t just move an iguana around in the middle of winter. Plus, have you tried moving that tank? It’s huge…” I said the last of my speech to his back as he simply turned and walked away. “Jackass.”

“I’m scared, Lane.” I let him pull me to his chest and closed my eyes as his arms wrapped around me.

“We’ll be ok.”

“This isn’t one of those Zombie movies. We’re not going to find some weird person with a key to the end of this epidemic. If anything, we’re probably bunched in with those that are the first to die.”

“No way.” He pressed his lips to my forehead. “Look. We have the guy who has a girlfriend and a kid, the single handsome guy, when the others get here we’ll have the jokers, the one that panics, and the girl who goes off and get herself killed.” He frowned. “Only we’ll make sure Lizzy doesn’t go off on her own.” He nodded, satisfied with his analogy. “We have all the key elements of the main cast of characters.”

“And what about us? You left us out.”
“Well, obviously, I’m the mature and brave one that will keep everyone from panicking.” He grinned. “And you’ll be the one that ends up rocking in a corner after you lose your mind.”
Meaka Kyel, Terra's Wrath

“It does not do to leave a live dragon out of your calculations, if you live near him.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit, or There and Back Again

“All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

“A peasant that reads is a prince in waiting.”
Walter Mosley, The Long Fall

“If you'll never leave me, I'll never leave you.”
Jane Rogers, Island

“Pretending to care what men think is an art. It takes moments to learn, but lifetimes to master. I’d like to believe I’m an expert.”
Dennis Sharpe, Blood & Spirits
