Clarissa Simmens holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and various practitioner certificates in Herbal Studies (first learned from her Grandmother), Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Gi-Jo Acupressure. She is the author of twenty-one poetry books available through Amazon. Writing poetry led to translating words into song lyrics and learning to play the baritone ukulele. She makes her home on the edge of a small swamp in Florida where, after decades of living in a northern city, she can finally dream and sing to the calls of Sand Hill Cranes, the crackling of scampering animals, and the croaking of off-key (like her) bull frogs.

But from today's aging perspective I'd have to say that my favorite fictional couple is Precious Ramotswe and Mr. JLB Matekoni, that calm and loving twosome created by Alexander McCall Smith in his The No. I Ladies Detective Agency. There is something about the quiet, understated love they share. Something so special about allowing each other to indulge in their chosen careers (detective and auto mechanic). Something so special about the concern for their children, their employees, their neighbors. Best of all is the spiritual time they spend together over dinner or a cup of bush tea. It is a lovely, non-violent relationship that I suspect is rare in real life but possible. (less)

Want a special birthday present

Maybe my brass planisphere

For the Northern hemisphere

Could show magical constellations

Touch one and I’m suddenly there

Square Corvus filled with cawing crows

Colorful glass and deep black feathers

Laid at my feet in neat rows

Touch Corona and I’m queen for the day

The crown tossed into the heavens

By a love-sick Greek god

Landing on my braid so tangled

“Close the TV and go into the night
Joyously dance under moonlight so bright!”
Clarissa Simmens, Madame Sosostris Explains

“Seeing through illusion is true fortune
As we banish the waves of distortion.”
Clarissa Simmens, Madame Sosostris Explains

“Perhaps all the dragons in our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us act, just once, with beauty and courage. Perhaps everything that frightens us is, in its deepest essence, something helpless that wants our love.”
Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet

“Human speech is like a cracked kettle on which we tap crude rhythms for bears to dance to, while we long to make music that will melt the stars.”
Gustave Flaubert, Madame Bovary

“But people themselves alter so much, that there is something new to be observed in them for ever.”
Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice

“Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before! What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!”
Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

“If the real world were a book, it would never find a publisher. Overlong, detailed to the point of distraction-and ultimately, without a major resolution.”
