My thoughts on Barry Gilder’s “The List”
I read the “Author’s note” multiple times, and I suspect many will too. He emphatically, and repeatedly, says “This book, is, emphatically, a work of fiction.”….

He may just have brilliantly " Read more of this review »

More of Barry's books…
William Maxwell
“What we, or at any rate what I, refer to confidently as memory--meaning a moment, a scene, a fact that has been subjected to a fixative and thereby rescued from oblivion--is really a form of storytelling that goes on continually in the mind and often changes with the telling. Too many conflicting emotional interests are involved for life ever to be wholly acceptable, and possibly it is the work of the storyteller to rearrange things so that they conform to this end. In any case, in talking about the past we lie with every breath we draw.”
William Maxwell, So Long, See You Tomorrow

Françoise Sagan
“A Strange melancholy pervades me to which I hesitate to give the grave and beautiful name of sorrow. The idea of sorrow has always appealed to me but now I am almost ashamed of its complete egoism. I have known boredom, regret, and occasionally remorse, but never sorrow. Today it envelops me like a silken web, enervating and soft, and sets me apart from everybody else.”
Françoise Sagan, Bonjour tristesse

Antonio Gramsci
“Man is above all else mind, consciousness -- that is, he is a product of history, not of nature.”
Antonio Gramsci
