Bev Spicer has been writing full-time for a number of years, from her crumbly Charentaise house in France. In a past life she gained a degree in English and French Literature (Keele University) and a PGCE in English methods (Queens' College, Cambridge).

She has lived in Bridgnorth, Cambridge, Rethymnon (Crete), Mahe (Seychelles), and now lives in Charente Maritime with her husband and youngest son. The next place she wants to explore is probably Spain. Her husband is very tolerant, and secretly enjoys chaos.

Bev has been a teacher, blackjack dealer for Playboy, examiner for Cambridge ESOL, secretary (various sorts - most boringly 'legal'), lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University, and a Sunday checkout girl for Tesco (who allowed her to deliver s

Hi Anthony,

Sorry, I didn't see your first post.

Thank you for reading Stranded. I can't find your review, just your two-star rating. Must say, your message made be hope for more!

Anyway, the answer to your question about France is that I'm living in Charente Maritime in a dusty old renovation, with the constant fear of termites! But the sun is hot and the restaurant next door formidable. My children speak fluent French and my husband loves DIY. I get to write every day. Perfect.

I've written a humorous memoir about a study trip to France when I was at university ('One Summer in France'). Another more literary title also set in France is 'A Life Lived Twice' - this doesn't contain much humour as it is a mystery/thriller set in Charente Maritime.

Your project sounds interesting. There is certainly a huge amount of non-fiction around about bombing off to France to start a new life.

Thanks for your question, it's nice to have a real one!

Best wishes,
Bev(less)

Excerpt from My Grandfather's Eyes:

Lizzy gets married at a registry office, in the summer before my own wedding, and I am invited to attend, as I knew I would be. She is stronger than me, or else she does not feel the pain I feel.  “You have to come, Al.  Promise you will!”  She knows I will do whatever she asks.
It is the final day of our camping trip to Thetford forest.  The holiday has been Read more of this blog post »

"Lightweight fun.

This Englishwoman has written four memoirs and three involve her escapades with her college friend Carol. I think her book "Stranded in the Seychelles" is better than this one, but the summer in France was the first of their adventure" Read more of this review »
