I will find myself procrastinating either because the work requires writing something uncomfortable next or (more often) because I'm putting pressure on myself and thinking too much about whether the story and writing are good enough.

At those times I might be worried about how big the project is and whether or not I can do it justice, or worried about who's going to read it, how it will be received, and whether or not I can compete with the writers who impress me the most.

The solution is usually to take the pressure off and just write something. A sentence, a paragraph, a scene. I focus on only the next thing required to TELL THE STORY. If I can keep the story moving forward even just a little and give myself permission to suck, knowing that I can always delete and edit later and that no one need ever read it if it's bad...then I almost always find that once the gears are in motion, some good ideas and words do come.

So my advice is to remember that inspiration comes from working, not the other way around. Also, as crazy as it sounds: The quality of the work is none of my business while I'm telling the story in first draft. (less)

“It seemed to him that there was a scarlet thread running through the fabric of life, one that joined events across the years, piercing human hearts and plunging underground, only to reemerge without warning, a thread connecting lives and sometimes dates.”
Douglas Wynne, Steel Breeze

“Everywhere he went he saw this same phenomenon—parents unmindful of their children, their attention fixed on little glass windows in the palms of their hands, mesmerized like drug addicts, longing for some artificial connection while their own flesh and blood careened wildly through a chaotic and violent world behind their backs. The writer was even worse. He invented false worlds and peopled them with ghosts while his motherless son scanned the horizon for a human connection. It was shameful. What did a man need to lose to be shaken from his immersion in a dream? What terminal force could liberate him from the pursuit of phantoms and engage him in the living world around him?”
Douglas Wynne, Steel Breeze

“Love and Death? What has great music or poetry ever been about, but those twin forces that undo a man?”
Douglas Wynne, The Devil of Echo Lake

“..........books are yours,
Within whose silent chambers treasure lies
Preserved from age to age; more precious far
Than that accumulated store of gold
And orient gems, which, for a day of need,
The Sultan hides deep in ancestral tombs.
These hoards of truth you can unlock at will:”

Yeah, I guess by narrowing it down to 3, you made me realize that they all have that epic quality in common. Funny, my own books are a lot tighter than those, but as a reader I do love immersion in a sprawling world.
