Isle of the Lost by Melissa de la Cruz

Are you a fan of fairy tales? Read this book. Fan of Disney’s Descendants? Read this book. The prequel to the summer hit Disney Channel Original Movie, Isle of the Lost brings a depth of understanding the five main characters that cannot ever be captured on screen. How did Evie, Mal, Carlos, and Jay become “friends” in the first place? Why did Ben decide to make his proclamation?

Join Mal and her friends on her quest to find her mother Maleficent’s dragon eye (her scepter) and make her proud. Will Mal be able to pull of the evilest of evil schemes? Or will she disappoint her mother yet again. Will Ben be able to smooth things over with the sidekicks of Auradon? Or is he destined to be a horrible king?

de la Cruz does a magnificent job bringing the famous fairy tale characters and their offspring to life in this wonderful prequel to a wonderful movie. The themes of abusive households, loneliness, and the struggle to prove worthiness are apparent and well explored.

The Paladin Prophecy by Mark Frost

A mystery of fantasy. Suddenly everybody is after Will and he (and you) have no idea why. Who can he trust? Where is he safe? Follow Will on his extraordinary adventure to stay alive and discover exactly why his life has been put in danger. I was immensely surprised and pleased by the amount of mystery and intrigue this book and to offer and where Front went with it. The story of five remarkable children at a remarkable school dealing with bullies, powers, and mysterious circumstance upon mysterious circumstance. I cannot recommend this book enough and am thoroughly enjoying the second book, Alliance.

The Tapestry Series by Henry H. Neff

At long last all five books have been released and I can write this long overdue review. I cannot praise this series or its writer enough. It is truly a series that grows with the reader getting darker and more meaningful with every page turn. Henry H. Neff is one of the few writers I have had the privilege of reading who’s plot twists are genuinely twists and are very often completely unpredictable (in a good way). The story follows David Menlo and Max McDaniels two boys selected to go to Rowan, a school for those who can wield magic, but don’t let that description deter you. The books themselves are not about the magic school, the magic school is simply a tool that make everything more interesting just as the Workshop and the magical creatures do. The story is about bullies and demons, origins and adventures, social constructs and civil rights, right and wrong, life and death. It is about two boys who stand up for themselves, for each other, and for those they love; no matter who or what tries to destroy them (and over the five books an awful lot of people try to kill these two kids).

Henry H. Neff manages to perfectly create a world that mirrors our own so perfectly whilst being unrecognizable after the events of the second book. It is emphasized through several examples that one bad seed does not make every member of that species bad and one good seed does not make every member of that species good. This is particularly relevant in todays culture where one terrorist act by a few rogue individuals can pit entire nations/races/religions against each other. I recognize that this review is probably one my least well written ones. These books are indescribable and amazing. They are much better at representation than most books of its kind. The only subgroup not particularly well represented is homosexuals. Also religions are not well represented, mostly because nearly all the characters are a-religious with a few exceptions and after the second book nobody really remembers any of our religious practices anyway.

Read. Them. These books aren’t well known but in my opinion they are much better than any of the teen dystopian best-sellers. The main characters are never in any doubt that the “utopia” being created around them is not even close; however most of the world is easily fooled.

For once we get to see the world as it used to be become the world of the dystopia and then get overthrown into something in between.

5 stars. Always.

Frontier Magic by Patricia C. Wrede

This series is a magnificent trilogy filled to the brim with magic and fantastic creatures. Set in an alternate reality eighteenth century America, the Frontier Magic series follows Eff, a seventh daughter of a seventh son and a thirteenth child as she grows up on the border of civilization. At a young age she and her family move to the frontier, right on the what in our world would be the Mississippi River (they call it the Mammoth River); the farthest explored edge. Along the river is what they call “the Great Barrier Spell” set in place by people like Ben Franklin that keeps the wildlife out west. However people are beginning to settle in the land beyond the barrier spell. This series follows the trials and troubles this causes and Eff’s involvement in keeping the peace. Wrede’s novels are fantastically written; often when reading I forgot it was just a book. Very few books exist that can follow a young girls life from age 5 to 25-ish and be exciting the whole way through. Wrede, while writing about an alternate reality, manages to capture many of the themes that apply to today’s society and how the American continents truly differ from the others as an amalgam of eastern culture. I highly recommend adding this series to your reading lists.
