Maddy Kobar has been writing stories since she was six years old, having started with a lifelong love of literature encouraged by her parents and teachers.

She graduated from UCONN with the class of 2018 with a BA in English. She is also a member of the 2018 class of The Columbia Publishing Course, which she attended at Oxford in the UK. She is currently a graduate student, studying for her Masters in English.

An avid reader and a proud participant of NaNoWriMo since 2011, Kobar lives for creating and traveling to new places. Tea, elaborate period dramas, taking tons of pictures with her phone and dogs are some of her other favorite things.

While a near-constant writer, this account is mainly going to concern reading and occasional book re

If you want to be an author, you MUST write. You cannot become a great author by dreaming alone. This sounds obvious, but I have met several people who spend so much time talking about all the goals they want to tackle and they never actually make any actions towards their goals. Talk with no action is just talk, as simple as that.

Writing is an action. It's not always easy since it takes time, unique ideas, and perseverance. Do not just "copy-paste" other people's ideas (it's painfully obvious when new writers try to copy existing work). Instead, be inspired by several different things and synthesize them into your own work. Read as much as you can. Listen closely to the lyrics of your favorite music (it's audio poetry). Take time to surround yourself with both nature and art. Give yourself time to think. An author's unique voice is their strongest weapon- after all, there is only one you. Whether you want it to or not, your life experience will influence your writing. It's better to lean into that rather than away from it.

Get used to hearing "NO" from publishers and agents too. Don't let it crush you. New authors are seen as risky for industry professionals to pick up so unless they LOVE your idea as much as you do, it will probably be a no. One of my novels was rejected almost fifty times by various agents and publishers. Has that destroyed me? No. I'm still writing. If anything, I let that rejection inspire me to get the energy to edit it heavily, making it into an almost entirely different story.

And not everyone in the reading public is going to like your writing either, but that's okay. If you put enough time in and practice your craft often, you will find plenty of people who will. Those are the people who you were trying to reach all along. The world has a way of working out like that. You'll find your readership. Just be patient and never give up hope!(less)

Way too many projects, if I'm being honest!

I've been collecting and publishing my old, previously unpublished poetry into several collections which I am currently releasing on Wattpad and Smashwords.

I'm also releasing and continuing to work on my The Veerys of Dove Grove series. I've been writing it since early 2018. Book 1 is completely on Wattpad. I'm reworking book 2 though it is a completed draft and I'll rerelease it later this year in chapters.

I have a new idea that I started as well which I might use for my NaNoWriMo 2020. (less)

“You must stay drunk on writing so reality cannot destroy you.”
Ray Bradbury, Zen in the Art of Writing: Releasing the Creative Genius Within You

“Read, read, read. Read everything -- trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master. Read! You'll absorb it.
Then write. If it's good, you'll find out. If it's not, throw it out of the window.”
William Faulkner

“A woman is like a tea bag; you never know how strong it is until it's in hot water.”
Eleanor Roosevelt

“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”
Oscar Wilde

“...because a life without meaning, without drive or focus, without dreams or goals, isn't a life worth living.”
Chris Colfer, Struck By Lightning: The Carson Phillips Journal
