My friend said this one sentence and it changed my business forever.

I was having lunch with a friend of mine (who is multimillionaire from his online businesses) and we were talking about new business projects we were working on, and he casually said this:

“I only work on projects that have the potential to bring me an additional 6-7 figures per year.”

I didn’t realize it at that moment, but that sentence ended up changing how I run my business forever. When I went home that night and looked at my (never-ending) business to-do list, I looked at all the tasks on there while thinking about what he said.

I realized very quickly that I was working on some very time consuming projects that didn’t have nearly as much income potential as some of the other things on there that I’d been ignoring for months.

For example, I was spending valuable time working on things that could bring one of my existing businesses a few extra percentage points in earnings per month, all while there were new projects I wanted to build that could equal or surpass the earnings of already existing businesses. In other words, one task might raise my earnings for one of my businesses by 5-10%, while the other could potentially bring an extra six figure business into my entire portfolio! And yet, for some reason, I was putting off executing new projects because I wanted to optimize one of my existing businesses (I wanted it to be *perfect*).

There is obviously nothing wrong with wanting to earn more money from an existing business, but if the new project has a much higher income potential and both activities take the same amount of time, the obvious choice is to move forward with the latter.

And after I started thinking this way, I realized there were all kinds of tasks I was doing that hardly made me that much extra money, and yet I kept doing them, and it was coming at the expense of working on more potentially lucrative projects that were constantly “on hold.”

From that point forward I looked at my business from only a “big picture” standpoint and prioritized my to-do list in order of how impactful those activities would be on my overall business.

Based on my results, I’d recommend you do the same.

Thought experiment (with a lesson!).

Here it is: what would you do with $30,000 / month of passive income?

Think about it for a little while and them come back and read this.

This is more of a philosophical question than a business one, but it’s important to think about. Why?

Because it will give you a clear idea of what it is that drives you. It’s actually a much more powerful question than “what would you do if you were rich?” This is because it puts a tangible number in your head and forces you into an actual analysis instead of a sort of fantasy / daydream.

For example, after thinking about it, it might turn out what you want to do is spend more time camping and hiking (this demonstrates that the real luxury you seek is more time). Maybe if you had those kinds of earnings, you would do an extended backpacking trip through Asia (in which case it becomes clear that location independence is what most matters to you). Perhaps you’d go to some less fortunate part of the world and try to help out (in which case charity is where your heart lies).

See what I mean? A lot of times the answer to this question turns out to be unrelated to any expensive purchases at all (or maybe you just have a few initial luxury items you’ve always wanted, but then after that a standard income would cover the lifestyle you desire).

In addition to answering this question as a hypothetical exercise, this question is one you may have to answer for real one day.

Why? Well, think about it:

First off, $30,000 / month is $1,000 / day, which is totally feasible in this business. This business is unique in the sense that it is about as difficult to get from 0 to $100 / day as it is to get from $100 / day to $1000 / day. Needless to say, there is a huge difference between those levels of earnings, but consistent traffic spikes happen all the time in this business, and those numbers are compounded when you have a massive portfolio of websites.

But just because your answer might make you realize you really don’t need to make that much money to be living the life that you want, it doesn’t mean that there isn’t a reason to strive for those numbers anyway! For me personally, most of my monthly earnings go into a bank account (or more specifically, investment vehicles), and that money saved up gives me total peace of mind, which to me is the greatest luxury imaginable.

So…what you would with $30,000 / month of passive income?

Hopefully your answer helps clarify what really drives you and then leads you to the kind of life you truly want to live.

Curious how much money I make from my Amazon books?

I’ve been making roughly between $1000 – $1500 / month for years off of my Amazon books and it’s undoubtedly the most passive part of my entire business (I don’t do ANYTHING once a book is released).

Even though I have several books in several languages (I had my books translated thinking it would multiply my business, but it didn’t), the bulk of my earnings come from these two:

How long did it take me to write these books? Roughly two weeks each. Obviously it took me years to learn the stuff that I wrote in these two books, but the actual sitting down, writing, and uploading of the books took me two weeks each from start to finish.

One month of work for an average of $1000+ in passive income for years to come?? Yes please!

While writing a book may seem like a daunting task, it really isn’t when it’s an informational book like these ones are. All I did was break down the book into an outline with the different chapters and subchapters I wanted to include, and filled them out one piece at a time. Then I revised and revised again (and then I revised again because I’m like that haha), and then I published!

Aside from the money these books make me, here are some of the other benefits I get from having my books listed on Amazon:

Instant credibility – Even though these are self-published books (meaning absolutely anyone can put one up for sale for Amazon), they give my business A LOT of credibility. The ultimate irony is that my friends and family (who don’t understand my business at all) are easily the most impressed by the fact that I have books for sale on Amazon (even though I consider the rest of my online businesses much more complex / impressive / interesting).

Lead generation – A lot of people find out about the LIONS CLUB through my books on Amazon, and the LIONS CLUB makes me money through affiliate sales. In other words, these books make me more money than what Amazon pays me.

If you are interested in doing something similar for your business, here are some tips:

– Write a book that compliments your existing online business / blog / website the way I have.

– When your book (a Microsoft Word document) is ready to be uploaded, simply follow one of the many free tutorials available online on how to do this (Amazon makes this process really easy).

– Also upload your book on CreateSpace so you can sell physical copies of your book on Amazon as well (it’s just more money in your pocket for work you’ve already done). They do print-on-demand, so it’s just as passive as the digital books and you don’t have to put any money down or anything like that. Just like uploading your digital book to Amazon, setting up your CreateSpace book on Amazon takes less than a day. I have yet to run into someone reading one of my books on the subway, but it’ll happen!

– If you don’t have any Photoshop skills (like yours truly), you can outsource the cover design for less than $100 (I’ve even seen this service sold on Fiverr).

– Cross promote: promote your website / business through your book and vice-versa (like I do).

– Depending on your goals for your book (exposure for your business or straight profit from the book sales), experiment with different price points and consider joining the KDP program (where you can offer your book free for five days total out of a 90 day period).

– Ask for reviews! The book with the most positive reviews in its category will get the most sales; it’s as simple as that.

How freelancing can become a six-figure business (advanced marketing techniques).

What I teach you on my LIONS CLUB website and in my newsletters isn’t rocket science. Learning how to make a website and some basic Internet Marketing takes some time to learn and some time to master, but it really isn’t hard.

The simple truth is, however, that it is something most people don’t know how to do. Others simply don’t have the time or patience to learn.

HOWEVER, just about any small business could benefit greatly from from a website and / or intelligent Internet Marketing.

Offering those services is an easy way to make yourself some extra money!

This used to make me at least 1-2k / month extra working a handful of days per month, and it is not out of the question that doing this could lead into a very profitable business if you start doing it full time (easily into the six figures).

You can go out and offer your services to local businesses. A lot of small businesses still don’t have a website (unbelievable right??), so you can make one for them. You can offer to set up their social media profiles and get a newsletter set up for them. With what you’ve learned on my website, you can offer them all kinds of services related to their web presence, and they will be happy to pay you as long as they see the results.

Not only that, but because most business owners have no idea how any of this stuff works, you can charge them a monthly maintenance fee (say $100 / month?), even though most of these things run themselves on auto-pilot!

Freelancing websites and other online services is essentially what enabled me to survive the economic crash of 2008 and eventually led to me building my first online business. That first online business gave me the financial freedom to test other online business ideas, and that’s pretty much how this all happened. Freelancing is what has kept me afloat during all the tough times and it’s something I’ll always have to fall back on.

In this newsletter I’m going to talk about some advanced marketing techniques that can take your freelancing business to the next level.

1. Specialization: This is one of the easiest ways to both make closing a deal with a client easier and charge more money at the same time. Let’s choose a random specialization as an example: plumbing.

To start, you would create a simple freelancing website: “Plumbing Online Solutions: we specialize in professional online advertising for plumbers.”

Imagine how many plumbers need this service, but are being marketed to only by generic online marketing companies, all with different services and prices. They end up shutting them all out from too much selection and confusion.

And then suddenly they get an email from a company that specializes in the plumbing industry! Not only are they suddenly much more interested in what you have to offer, they will pay more for a specialist too.

And as you already know, all online marketing is exactly the same regardless of which industry you are in. The only difference here is their perception of you. Nothing about what you do changes at all (except maybe the price!).

2. Be a complete solution: Yep, maybe they hired you because they needed a website (and nothing else at that time). But let them know that you can also set up their social media, build their mailing list, do their SEO, generate more leads, run PPC campaigns, and more! And explain the benefits of all these things that you can do for them.

If there is one thing all entrepreneurs have in common, it’s a shortage of time. Many of them will pay a premium price if you can solve all their problems. Upsell them on all those things and charge a monthly maintenance fee.

3. Facebook advertising: Facebook advertising is expensive when you are going for generic keywords: “Houston Texas Web Design.”

But when you specialize your ad, the prices go down to just a few cents per click: “Web Design for Plumbers in Houston Texas.”

And not only will your clicks be extremely cheap, you will only be getting extremely targeted traffic, which will make your conversion rate very high as well. Doing this will generate new leads for your freelancing business nearly free of charge!

Combine these three strategies, and you can easily build a six figure business freelancing. Imagine if you built 10 different specialty freelancing websites, all getting constant leads from Facebook advertising, and charged $1000 / website. With two gigs per week, that’s $8000 / month. This doesn’t include all the extra services you are adding to their bill and doesn’t include your monthly maintenance fees, which will slowly build over time.

All businesses work better when you think big and that includes freelancing! Start thinking this way, and you’ll begin to notice opportunities for extra income open up around you all the time!

Why is testing monetization techniques so important? Example inside.

For the same reason it is important to have several different websites, it is important to monetize those websites in different ways.  Why?  Because each website you own will bring a different demographic of people, and depending on that traffic, some monetization techniques will work better than others.

Here is a typical example: one website could make $25/1000 visitors when monetized with Google Adsense and $75/1000 visitors when monetized with Amazon Associates.  If that website is getting 2000 visitors daily, that is a difference between a website making you $50/day versus $150/day.  That would be $3,000/month that you are missing out on if you had never tested monetizing that website with Amazon!  Extrapolated over a year: $36,000.  See the importance of performing these simple tests?

And this is not an extreme case by any means.  The eCPM (earnings per 1000 visitors) can vary from $5 to $200 for the SAME AMOUNT OF TRAFFIC.  This is the importance of testing different monetization techniques.

I usually start testing different monetization techniques once any page on any website across my portfolio starts generating traffic of over 100 uniques per day.  And I usually test earnings for at least 500 unique visitors (but obviously, the higher that number, the more accurate you will be).

Testing is fairly easy.  A simple example would be to mark how much money you made on a post for the past 500 visitors with Google Adsense.  Next (for example), take off the Adsense and monetize with Amazon associates.  Write down how much you made from Amazon for the next 500 visitors, than replace the Amazon monetization with Commission Junction. How social media has multiplied my business with virtually no extra effort.

Even though there are all kinds of conflicting opinions about the effectiveness of social media platforms for online businesses, one thing is for sure: social media is here for good and therefore shouldn’t be ignored.

Right now I have Mike Omar and the LIONS CLUB on Facebook, Twitter, Udemy, LinkedIn, and a bunch of other online platforms. I’m not a fan of all of them, but I try my best to use all of them at least a little bit.

Why?

Because I want to reach as many people as possible, and allow myself to be accessible to as many people as possible, through whatever medium those people might prefer. Essentially I am casting a wider net and connecting with more people than I would have otherwise.

I’ve met a lot of online business owners that choose one social media platform and stick with it, and I believe this is silly because they are limiting their exposure. If they jumped on every major social media platform and made just a slight effort, they would gain more exposure for their businesses.

Do yourself a favor and dedicate just a little bit of time to maintaining a presence on the major social media platforms; you will be happy with the results.

How to sell FREE products.

A fantastic way to make totally passive income is selling your own digital product (yep, you’re essentially selling a computer file!). You set up a sales page describing what your product is and have a “buy now” button on it. Then when someone clicks that button, they are redirected to a payment portal. Once they pay, they are redirected to the download page where they can get the product. The payment they made is deposited directly into your bank account.

The product you are selling can be an ebook, software, a video series, or any other type of digital file. If you are an expert in any field that people are looking for information on, you can put together an informational product on it.

Setting up a sales page is easy is you use a theme like OptimizePress (and it becomes especially powerful when combined with AWeber for collecting email addresses).

There are several third party credit card processing companies you can use to do this (including PayPal), but I personally like to use ClickBank, and this is why: ClickBank allows other people to become an affiliate for you very easily. This means that other people can send traffic to my website, and if that person buys a product, I give them a portion of the profit. I like to participate in this program for all my informational product websites and give affiliates a generous 75% commission. I like to participate in the affiliate program because even though I am giving up a large portion of the profits, those are sales I wouldn’t have had otherwise. It’s a win-win.

What I teach you on my LIONS CLUB website and in my newsletters isn’t rocket science. Learning how to make a website and some basic Internet Marketing takes some time to learn and some time to master, but it really isn’t hard.

The simple truth is, however, that it is something most people don’t know how to do. Others simply don’t have the time or patience to learn.

HOWEVER, just about any small business could benefit greatly from from a website and / or intelligent Internet Marketing.

Offering those services is an easy way to make yourself some extra money!

Here is some freelancing advice I wrote down from back in the day when I used to freelance: freelancing advice.

This used to make me at least 1-2k / month extra working a handful of days per month, and it is not out of the question that doing this could lead into a very profitable business if you start doing it full time (easily into the six figures).

You can go out and offer your services to local businesses. A lot of small businesses still don’t have a website (unbelievable right??), so you can make one for them. You can offer to set up their social media profiles and get a newsletter set up for them. With what you’ve learned on my website, you can offer them all kinds of services related to their web presence, and they will be happy to pay you as long as they see the results.

Not only that, but because most business owners have no idea how any of this stuff works, you can charge them a monthly maintenance fee, even though most of these things run themselves on auto-pilot!

See what I mean when I say learning these things opens up so many doors? If you do this for five businesses and charge them $100 per month for maintenance (which means occasionally updating their website), you’d be making $500 per month in passive income – not to mention the amount you charged for setting all that up in the first place.

Start thinking this way, and you’ll begin to notice opportunities for extra income open up around you all the time!

My entire life is on my laptop – all my photos, music, videos, and all my personal and business documents. Up until a few years ago, if anything were to ever happen to my laptop, I would lose tons of valuable personal data (and be crushed).

Luckily, internet storage became popular before that ever happened, and now I sleep soundly at night knowing that no matter what might happen to my laptop, there is a storage facility somewhere that has all my data safely stored away.

Everything important that I own is in one of two places (outside of my laptop): Gmail / Google Docs and DropBox.

My entire business is run out of one giant excel spreadsheet and one word document (a giant and ever-shifting to-do list), both of which are on Google Docs.

All the rest of my business related documents (website files, images, videos, etc.), as well as all the rest of my personal files, are all on DropBox. For those of you that don’t know, DropBox is a special folder that you download onto your desktop, and everything in that folder is simultaneously saved on a remove hard drive online somewhere and updated in real time.

What is really cool about DropBox is:

1.  If anything happens to my laptop, all those files are safe and can be retrieved easily.

2.  I can access and modify any of those files from the Internet (and therefore, work from anywhere with a computer and an Internet connection, even without my own laptop).

If all the important stuff on your computer isn’t backed up somewhere, I’d highly recommend using DropBox.

Want to know the second biggest overall source of traffic to my website portfolio? YouTube (after Google).

The amount of content being uploaded on YouTube is staggering – 48 hours worth of footage per minute. Their website gets over three BILLION hits per day. If you don’t have a YouTube presence, you are potentially missing out on huge amounts of direct traffic (not to mention the indirect SEO benefits of having a few links from YouTube pointing back to your website!).

Regardless of what type of business you are in or trying to promote, making a decent high-quality video is not hard, and the process of uploading it onto YouTube is extremely simple.

For my video series, I recorded all my Internet Marketing lessons using Camtasia (if you are a Mac user, the equivalent recommended software is ScreenFlow.

Once the software was opened, I just hit the record button, and everything that I did on the screen was being captured and all the noises in my room were being recorded (my videos are simply me talking with the door shut). Then when I finished, I hit the “stop” button and the segment was saved. Once I was satisfied with all my segments, I put them all together and made the video…very easy.

No matter what kind of business you are in, make a few videos describing who you are and what you can offer. There is no downside to putting yourself on the second largest search engine in the world!

And one final tip: when you make your description for the video on YouTube, make sure the very first thing you write down is your website address (as I have in all of mine) – the display of the description on YouTube is tiny so you want to make sure the link to your website is the very first thing they see.

The Make Money from Home LIONS CLUB  was founded by me (Mike Omar) to help people learn how to make money from home and escape their dependence on an outside job.
