Something different

I suppose it all began when I first began reading about the exploits of Billy Bunter in ‘The Magnet’ in my schooldays. I expect everyone else has similar stories to tell. I’d love to hear about them. All the time, I was searching for something different that would capture my imagination. Like many others, I was won over by the latest Saint and Maigret books and adventure stories like ‘Campbell’s Kingdom’ and went on to discover the delights of Pop Larkins brought to life by H.E.Bates. But it wasn’t until I came across an old copy of ‘Hot Water’ by P.G.Wodehouse that I finally succumbed to the magic of his prose and I became a devotee on the spot and have never looked back. I still think this is one of the best stories he has written, despite being completely lost in the Blanding Castle sagas and the indignities heaped upon Lord Elmsworth by his sister, Constance. Luckily, his ever helpful brother, Galahad, is always on hand to straighten out whatever problem may arise. No doubt others would be equally captivated by stories of Bertie Wooster being threatened by his aunt Agatha’s plans for improving his mind, only to be saved by Jeeves at the eleventh hour. Or indeed they may have their own favourite stories. I believe someone said that opening one of his books is like relaxing in a warm and comfortable bath.
I like to think that in my own small way I am helping to carry on the tradition of tilting at some of the absurdities of life that constantly surround us. In doing so, if I manage to raise a smile or chuckle in the process I shall be well content; and should you consider adding a comment at the end of any of my stories, I will feel that it has all been worthwhile.
