When I was in my teens, twenties, and thirties I embarked on an intrepid spiritual quest that included two trips to India, a lifetime of hatha yoga and meditation practices, and retreat at various yoga ashrams. I was influenced in my development by a number of powerful teachers. This process of spiritual training and apprenticeship affected my life so much that I wrote a book about it that was published in 1997. It is now being released in a new revised edition by Inner Traditions. This book features personal stories, photography, interviews with teachers and their students, reflection on spiritual initiation and pedagogy, and a healthy amount of scholarship on the roles of teachers in various mystical traditions and pathways.
