This is a 100% true story.

I lived with my father in an apartment during my last year of college in 1991. I was the oldest child in the family, age 26, and my parents had long ago divorced. I needed to cram in lots of credit hours to finish college a few semesters early to save cash. My Dad had just divorced his second or third wife and needed a place to stay, so we became roommates of convenience. We split all the bills, I actually helped him more than he helped me, so it was not the standard "parent taking care of the college kid" situation. It was going to be a few months of just work, school, and sleep. It was going to be rough, but it had to be done.
I was working the sandwich counter at Wawa's during the lunch rush, so I was crazy busy that day. A tall guy came up from the side and shouted a question over the line of people, "Are you Bob's son?"
I look exactly like my father and people "recognized" him in me all over our town, so this was a very common question and occurrence for me. Without looking, I said, "Yes, my Dad is Robert Guarino."
"Do you remember me?"
I looked up and saw a tall, curly-haired blonde guy. He looked to be ten or so years older than me. "Sorry, no. Should I?"
Before walking away, he said, "Tell your Dad that Larry said hello."
"Uhhh, okay. Whatever. ...weirdo," and I turned back to my work.
After work but before class that day, I mentioned to my father that "Larry said hello" and his whole demeanor suddenly changed. His hands began to shake and he stood up and paced to blow off the nervous energy that had erupted.
"Do you want to meet him?"
"Meet who? Larry? Who is Larry?"
Dad sighed heavily, "He's your older brother."

I have four sisters and one brother and barely talk to any of them at this time, I did not see any reason to add another relative to the mix. I did get curious later, but my father died before he could ever arrange the meeting and told me nothing more. I never seriously pursued it, so I only know the name "Larry" and a few bits of heresay from the daughter of a woman my father dated off and on for years. My sisters refuse to believe Larry exists and my brother does not care either way.(less)

Down In A Hole

This is where it started:

I hid my pain for as long as I could,
Until I couldn't do it any more,
Until it hurt too much to go on,
So I gathered my courage,
Because taking this next step was going to be painful.

I wanted things to get better,
I didn't want them to end,
I wanted to work on things, to fix them,
But before I could do or explain anything,
You got sick.

Could I explain it now?
That I was hurting?
