Social Media

Thank you for sharing my journey into publication with me. It's an unbelievable thrill knowing my first book is finally going to reach readers in just 16 days! (Man the cannons! Prepare for a broadside!) I'm saluting the nudge by my muse which became the Nelson's Tea Series. Duke By Day, Rogue By Night, is the first book in the trilogy.

While I'm anticipating my book launch October 29th, and a fabulous partay aboard ship, the whole process of becoming a published author has, at times, been overwhelming. Why? Authors, especially new authors, struggle to get the word out about their books in the current publishing market. In the old days, authors could rely upon publishing houses for promotions and giveaways, and book signings at local book stores to drum up interest. With the dawn of Ebook publishing however, much of this responsibility has now fallen upon authors. That can be good or bad, depending upon the amount of time an author chooses to spend delving into social media.

"Put down the cutlass, all is not lost!"

Have no fear. To the rescue great online opportunities have risen to take the place of tried and true book tours, enabling authors to still have that logistic passage over the horizon into reader's hands. Though traditional routes have changed, (Hoist the colors!) we live in fabulous times. There's no need to wait years for sequels to books, for book tours, or chances to meet an author. The Internet has radically changed lives for the better. Though it isn't the mid-1700's, it is the Golden Age of Literacy with so many wonderful choices at hand.

So how does a new author create buzz for his/her very first book? By increasing a social media presence through great venues like publisher websites, Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Blogs without sacrificing writing time. It's a hard balance, one in which I'm still trying to gain finesse. But because of you, dear reader, I know the effort will be so well worth my time.

I'll be posting my blog tour here soon. In the meantime, you can find me on www.okaylistenhere.blogspot.com, www.crimsonromance.com/, www.teatimeromance.wordpress.com, Facebook and Twitter at @katherinelbone. I'm off to chart a course toward that horizon. Until I weigh anchor again, I wish you blessings!

Big Girl Panties

Oh boy! Do I ever need BIG girl panties!

Life can be hectic and crazy, me hearties. One day can be gloriously epic, while another one can cast you into the abyss. The great thing about each day that comes... you never know which type of day you're going to get. Doesn't that make life interesting? I think so.

Days, months, years. Epic books aren't written in a day. Nor are they written in a few days. I've heard a very special author say she writes books in two weeks. ACK! Is that possible? Apparently so. (Pass me that mojo!) But the average shorter book gets written in six weeks.

I don't normally write shorter books. Though I can honestly say, Lost Treasure, Captive Princess, at 46,000 words was my first try. The book took more than 3 months to write because I had to adjust my technique to include modern language, when I'm instinctively drawn to historical styles. And then there was the constant revising, because again, I was venturing into a foreign land, so to speak. Duke by Day, Rogue by Night went through a few versions from the 75,000 word book HQN Mills & Boon had for two years, to the 90,000 word book that sold to Crimson Romance. Also, not written in weeks.

Stephen King says, and I summarize here, "If it takes longer than three months to write a book, the writer loses momentum and the passion for the work." He's right. I've found myself in this position many times, mateys. A good historical, given research and revisions, can take up to six months. That's half of an author's year!

This brings me to my point. Readers, that's you, me hearties, read a book in a day or more. What brings you the greatest joy took an author months to perfect. So much agony, time, talent and passion goes into each and every book sold today. Each word thoroughly researched in historicals. Each word infinitely important to the characters and plot. Each word born of an author's soul.

When a book reaches you, dearest readers, big girl panties come in handy for the author. And, at times, Depends. Muahahaha! We never know how well our books will be received. We never know if our books will disappoint or offer a much needed escape. When the reviews come in, good or bad, they offer feedback that negates or equates time well spent. That's an author's barometer. Well, that and a compass which points to what we want most. ;)

Thus, the need for big girl panties!

Has there been a time when you needed to put on your big girl panties?

Life's An Adventure!

Life's an adventure, isn't it?

Twenty years ago, I decided I wanted to tell stories the muse put into my head. I began to research. I started writing, even though I practically had no idea what I was doing. Like a fish out of water, I struggled against the currents/percentages that foretold I was wasting my time, wouldn't finish my novel, and would probably quit before it ever got published. But I didn't quit. I read countless "how to" writing books, took online classes, and went to workshops and conferences. I joined writing groups and sought out people who had a compass that pointed to what they wanted most. (Success is all about how you view life, isn't it?)

During those twenty years, was my glass half-full or half-empty? If you asked me at various times, I might have said, half-empty. Why? When those rejections started pouring in, doubts came home to roost. Will I ever finish my novel? Will anyone ever like my stories? Will I ever get my novel published?

Being positive is hard work. It's in our belief that we achieve. It's in our belief that we receive. By accepting the stages of life we're in the process of living, we have the power to overcome any obstacle, to move past rejections, critics, contest judges, and internal editors striving to empty our glass, or whatever hurdles we face.

There's adventure in everything, isn't there? Including never giving up. Along adventure's path, you might have to recalibrate your heading a time or two, or maybe more, but as long as you steer toward that next horizon, you will rendezvous with success. It's only a matter of time.

"You have to send your ship out before you ship can come in."

The most wonderful thing about books is they give readers untold adventure. Some mirror the reality of daily living. Others manifest dreams stored in the human heart. Writers hope to deliver both by imagining readers's deepest longings and bringing them to life. So what has my compass been pointing to for twenty years? Bringing joy to readers. If I'm able to do that, every single year striving to get my stories published has produced an overflowing glass.

Life's an adventure! It's like a Tootsie Roll Pop. You never know what you're going to get. But as long as you see life as a glass half-full, gooey-centered goodness is guaranteed.

Don't ever give up on your goals, whatever they may be. Strive to thrive. Believe to receive. Meet doubt head on. Don't be afraid of crashing and burning. Pick yourself up and reach for that half-full glass. It just might overflow with rum. ;)

Blessings,
Katherine

Duke by Day, Rogue by Night Available in Paperback!

There are so many challenging but wonderful stages of being a published author. But nothing tops being able to hold your book in your own hands! Today, that possibility opened for me when Duke by Day, Rogue by Night became available in Print on Demand!!!!

(Psst! I've ordered my first 5 copies!!!)

Needless to say, I'm jumping stars tonight. I'm grinning ear to ear and my cheeks are already sore from smiling so much. What a joyous thing this is!!!

Like many of you can imagine, I've been checking Amazon and B&N for a few months now, hoping upon hope that my turn at bat would come and my book would be available in POD format. Today was one of those days I'd actually neglected to check. It wasn't until one of my Crimson Romance sister's published the new list that I realized I hadn't checked in a few days. And Woot!!!! The best surprise of my life!!! And I really needed a boost like this today. Starting new projects is always tricky business. I'm in the beginning stages of a new/old project now. Not sure if I'm happy with it at this point, but perhaps that will change the further I go along.

But there is this excitement to get my boosters popping! In the meantime, if you want to take a peak at my POD on Amazon, here's the link:
http://www.amazon.com/Duke-Rogue-Nigh...

As always, it's such a pleasure sharing a bit of myself with you.

Walk tall, dear readers. Speak proudly. And share your life with the ones you love!

Blessings,
Katherine

Hemlock Grove!

Sad times, me hearties. It's a delicate subject that I don't want to depress you with, but our pastor died this week after having a massive stroke. He was only 60 years old. Our church family is striving to provide comfort to his grieving widow and children.

How do you get through grief? I usually want to sleep. But this weekend I had a planned event in Montgomery, the Alabama Book Festival, to attend. It was a bittersweet time, but no greater boon to my spirits. Being with friends is one of the best ways to get through hard times. Selling one of my Duke by Day, Rogue by Night paperback books and signing it to Kristan was a bright spot in my day! (Thanks, Kristan!!)

This weekend I've found another way to ease my soul. Netflix has what they call a "binge series" called Hemlock Grove. If you haven't heard of this series, check it out here:
http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Hem...

Like a lovesick fool, I watched all 13 episodes, 9 of which I watched today. And I have to admit I'm addicted!!! So I urge you, if you're feeling down or you're just plan bored, sit down and prop your feet up. Hemlock Grove has got it all... vampires, werewolves, witches, shapeshifters, suspense, who-done-it and more.

I may just have to watch it again...
Blessings,
Katherine

Special Thanks to Reviewers!!!

There's nothing better than peeking at your Goodreads page and seeing another review has been uploaded for one of your books, me hearties! I wanted to take the opportunity today to thank each and every reader who's posted a review for either of my books so far. Your feedback and kindness has touched my heart in a very personal and gratifying way.

There are so many reasons to thank readers. First and foremost, thank you for buying my books. For years I dreamed of having one of my books published. Imagine my heartfelt joy to be able to share 3 of those books with you this past year. Readers make this writing business totally worth the job of sitting in front of a computer every day and churning out stories.

Writing is a solitary business. Though it's done mostly in a separate room, in a quiet space, or filled with soundtrack music from movies I love that help with setting, I'm never really alone. The characters from my books keep me company. And they're the BEST companions a writer can ask for. Why? Because all they ask for is to have their stories told so that they can share their adventures with you!

Adventure, romance, espionage, thrilling actions sequences, love triangles, rogues, rebels and rakes... who could ask for more these days, eh?

Thank you again for reaching out to me and for sharing your opinions. I cherish you all!!!

Blessings,
Katherine

Romance Readers' Luncheon

Hey gang,

Some fun stuff coming up for me. First, I've been putting together some awesome promo for the 2013 Heart of Dixie's Romance Readers' Luncheon, June 8th. Gotta take care of my peeps, right? I'm a creative soul, so I love discovering exciting ways to share my book love, aka my books. LOL!!

What did I come up with, you ask? Well, for starters each attendee will be getting a a packet with postcards, bookmarks and my signature Stress Bone. Top that off with an author basket door prize, plus a Rogue raffle basket. And that's not all. Each guest at my table will receive a print copy of Duke by Day, Rogue by Night and a surprise pirate trunk filled with goodies. I can't wait to share me treasure!!!

Readers are what makes writing a success. Readers are the buoy to a writer's spirit. Book wouldn't be available without readers. It's my goal to ensure that my readers know how much I care about them. That's why I've opened another Goodreads Giveaway as a means of celebrating my newest release The Rogue's Prize.

I hope you feel my love for you, even if you aren't attending tomorrow's luncheon in Alabama. You, dear reader, are the wind in my sails.

Blessings,
Katherine

Pulling Into Port

Ahoy, me hearties! I'm pulling into port for a brief visit. I've been out of pocket for a while getting ready for the 2013 RWA Conference in July, which was a fabulous event, and one I almost had to beg off from due to problems with my neck. But I made it through and had a glorious time! When I returned home it was time to prepare for neck surgery, which I had August 2nd. The surgery went great and I'm on the mend. However, my time online is very limited so I do apologize for not posting much these days.

I appreciate everyone who has read and reviewed my books! You make this job worthwhile, me hearties!!! Without readers, there would be no writers. Without writers, there would be no need to read. We are all on this journey together and I can't wait until we meet here again.

Blessings,
Katherine
