A Thank You Letter

2013 was a life changing year for me. My husband was deployed to Afghanistan for a year, and I was on my own with two busy kids and a house to renovate. As you can imagine (and I know some of you don’t need to imagine), it’s important to your sanity to do something just for yourself. So, I fell back into an old and very familiar habit: Writing.

Like most authors, I had a drawer full of manuscripts that never saw the light of day.

Sunset Rising Trilogy

But when I started writing Sunset Rising, something just clicked. It was the right story at the right time in my life. It was somewhere to pour my heart and soul during those evening hours I would’ve normally spent with my husband. It was a place where I could discover new things, fall in love, and win the war.

I am absolutely sickened that someone would steal that from me. Not only did writing SR see me through a challenging year, it was the story that finally transformed me from a closet writer to published author. And I’m happy to brag that it made it into the top ten on Amazon — a victory I sorely needed to validate myself as an author and continue writing the rest of the series. So to see my story copied and butchered with an another author’s name claiming rights to it was a punch in the gut — the kind that knocks the air out of you and makes you want to vomit. And I don’t take accusing someone of plagiarism lightly. I truly believe the greatest form of flattery an author can receive is inspiring others to write. But this was blatant.

As this situation is currently in the hands of lawyers, I won’t talk more on it. The reason I’m writing this post is to shout out a massive thank you to everyone supporting me. I seriously don’t know how I would’ve handled this without your emails, comments and posts. From readers to authors to book bloggers to publicists and even professional ghost writers, I have been truly humbled by your offers of help, support and advice. I particularly owe Jaime at RockStar Book Tours a huge debt of gratitude for so generously volunteering her time to put together a book tour for SR to shed a spotlight on the original story.

And as much as I look forward to the tour showcasing Sunset Rising, I’m also hoping that it starts a bigger conversation on social media about plagiarism. While I get that copypastecris stole from 50 different authors, including Nora Roberts and Courtney Milan, giving rise to a veritable army of outraged readers and authors storming the internet, what happened to me is no less shocking. Plagiarism should not be tolerated under any circumstances, because it will be a very slippery slope when we start accepting and making excuses for criminal behaviour. The researcher in me is falling down the rabbit hole on this one, and I’m honestly afraid for the future of honest writers. There’s a good overview in The Guardian if you’re interested in reading more.

Thank you all for your support, love and encouragement. This is a very difficult situation for me, but without all of you I would be completely lost. Please keep your emails and posts coming! xoxo

S.M. McEachern’s next novel: you get to pick!

As promised in my last post, here is the poll where you, the reader, get to tell me, the writer, what to write next. Just take a look at the book descriptions below and vote for the novel you’re most excited to read.  On January 20, 2019, I’ll see which one has the most votes and start writing!  And to give me incentive to ignore those pesky distractions in my life, I’ll even give bi-weekly excerpts via my newsletter to make sure I’m staying on track. So if you haven’t signed up to my Readers List yet, what are you waiting for? Just click Here (or on the form to your right) to get the excerpts!  Now on to casting your vote:

Sunset Rising Ezvid Wiki Feature

2019 started off with bang for this author cool  Sunset Rising has been getting a lot of love lately, and I was really touched to learn that Ezvid Wiki named Sunset Rising in their top ten “Sensational Works of YA Science Fiction.”  They even made a cool booktrailer video to go with the feature. Click on the picture to the right if you want to go check it out! (SR is #6).

Jen at Star-Crossed Book Blog also gave a big shout out for Sunset Rising as one of the books she hoped to find under her Christmas tree. And I couldn’t resist making that wish come true! I hope she enjoys Sunny and Jack’s story as much as she loved Geri and Sean’s in Shag Lake!

And with all the love flowing Sunset Rising’s way, I am inspired to get back to my keyboard. Although I have been writing this past year, I … um … haven’t finished anything sealed  To be fair, my life has been busy and full of new adventures that have easily distracted me. BUT, I do have four different intros to the PIT Series started (sequel to the Sunset Rising trilogy), as well as a few other novels you might be interested in … and I really do want to know if you’re interested!!  In a few hours I’m going to post a poll with a short description of each book I’m working on so you can tell me what to write next!  That’s right. You, the reader, get to direct me, the writer.

As soon as the results are in, I’ll get to work on writing and finishing the winner.  And to keep myself on track and ignoring distractions (and believe me, there’s a doozy coming my way!)  I’ll even provide excerpts via my newsletter once or twice a month. So check back in a few hours to cast your vote! I’m super excited to see what you think laughing

Cheers,

Disruption to the Sunset Rising Trilogy

As I blogged about in November, Pronoun will be shutting its doors forever on January 15, 2018. Hence, it’s time to pack up the Sunset Rising trilogy from its home of three years and move to another place. This migration, as it’s called in the publishing industry, will come with some disruption to the books being available for purchase. I’ll do my best to minimize this annoyance. Thanks so much for your understanding and patience. Cheers!

Macmillan Announces Closure of Pronoun

S.M. McEachern with the Pronoun Team, NYC, July 2015

S.M. McEachern with the Pronoun Team, NYC, July 2015

Macmillan Publishers sent me an email yesterday, November 6, 2017, to let me know that it will be shutting down its self-publishing platform, Pronoun.

The news kind of choked me up, with a heavy emphasis on the kind of, because after my initial shock, when grief and abandonment began to set in, I realized there weren’t many people left at Pronoun for me to hug goodbye.

Sure, there have been a lot of personnel changes since I signed the Sunset Rising trilogy over to Vook in the spring of 2014. In fact, my journey with them started off a little rocky when my sales took a nosedive in the post-KDP Select weeks and didn’t really recover until Vook morphed into Pronoun in early 2015. That’s when they acquired Booklr, and the real business of creating a self-publishing platform that could rival all others began in earnest.

Over the next year and a half, the Pronoun team did some pretty impressive things with Booklr—their proprietary data and analytics program that they used in tandem with updating keywords and category selections to give titles more visibility on the Amazon bestselling lists. My book sales picked up and coasted around 15-24K in Amazon rankings, so my marketing efforts (giveaways, Bookbub features, etc) always sent the books into the top one thousand, if not the top one hundred.

So despite my initial misgivings about signing on with Vook, what Pronoun did for my books and for me went above and beyond. You see, I live the kind of life that sometimes gets romanticized about in literature, but if I were to tell you about it I would paint a picture of a life that is both demanding and emotionally draining. Unfortunately, time and emotion are two key strengths that I need in order to be a storyteller, so there was an extended period during my time with Pronoun when I didn’t write. (As an aside, I know dear readers that you were hoping for the follow up series to Sunset Rising, and I apologize I came out with Shag Lake instead, but I really needed to write about something a little less dark and a lot more fun than a dystopian, and Geri and Sean navigating their way through my twisted sci-fi world was it.)

Anyway, all of the above to say that if it had not been for Allison’s many emails questioning me about what I need as an independent author to be successful in publishing, sharing with me the innovative things they were working on, always keeping my books front and center with readers (which in turn lead to a lot of relationships I currently have with you guys), and Jeffrey’s personal support of the Sunset Rising series that buoyed my confidence, I may very well have stopped writing.

Pronoun truly was my publishing partner, until they were no longer Pronoun.

Macmillan purchased them in May 2016, and despite assurances from the team that Macmillan was excited to get into the indie publishing-space, I had my doubts. I was thinking it was more likely they were attracted to Pronoun’s proprietary data analysis engine to use on their own books. However, I tapped into my inner optimist and tried to convince myself that Macmillan would see the value in hosting a pool of authors they could cherry pick from, as well as getting an insider view of the indie publishing world. But that became increasingly difficult to do when it became known that not everyone from the original team would be moving into the new offices in the Flatiron Building, and even more members left the company after the move. Oh, and my book sales tanked. They began a steep downward spiral sometime in January 2017.

Today, there is only one name I recognize from the old Pronoun days. Communications with the company have become slow and impersonal, which is to be expected since I don’t really know anyone working there anymore. My Sunset Rising trilogy is still stuck in the old Vook dashboard, even though my contract ended last July. And getting control back of them has proven to be a complicated issue that’s not without risk. In fact, I was working with Pronoun on that very issue last week, and they told me they would have my books transitioned to the new platform by March 2018.

Now I know that’s not going to happen. Pronoun is closing its doors by January 15, 2018, bringing an end to my three-year journey with them.

So, yeah, I’m kind of choked up about it. But it’s not really about the loss of my publishing partner because that happened back in 2016. It’s about the loss of a painstakingly constructed publishing platform that empowered independent authors by giving them the tools and knowledge they needed to be successful.

But ever the optimist, I’m holding on to Macmillan’s closing statement, “Macmillan is unable to continue Pronoun’s operation in its current form” and crossing my fingers that we haven’t seen the last of it.

Cheers,

The WWIII Prophecy of Sunset Rising?

Looks like I need to do some editing on the Sunset Rising prologue. Apparently I was feeling a little complacent when I set February 2024 as the beginning of my fictional global nuclear war.  But back in 2012 when I was writing Sunset Rising, North Korea’s new supreme leader, Kim Jong Un, was new on the international stage. Nobody took his baby-face taunts of toppling the US from its superpower status so the tiny hermit kingdom of North Korea could claim the throne seriously, even though Kim was playing with rocket launchers.

For one thing, it was negligible if he possessed a missile capable of reaching US soil. For another thing, the USA’s nuclear arsenal was way bigger than Kim’s because thanks to The Cold War, the US and Russian collectively hold about 93% of the known 15,000 nuclear weapons on the planet. So the US wasn’t about to be distracted by this little tyrant when they had bigger things to deal with, like ridding the world of terrorists and going through their own leadership growing pains. No, they left it to China to bring North Korea to heel because after all, China and North Korea share more than just a border; they were comrades in the Korean War and have since become inextricably linked.

Fast forward to 2017, five years after I wrote the prologue for Sunset Rising and four years after I wrote the second book, Worlds Collide, and even I’m shook about how much I got right. Donald Trump as POTUS has opened the door for Nazis and white supremacists to come out of the closet (whether he intended for that to happen or not), and Kim Jong Un is now playing with the bigger, more devastating hydrogen bomb.

Hydrogen-freaking-bombs 1,000x more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima.

The World War II déjà vu the current US Administration is stirring up is alarming enough, but the fact that an insane dictator from a small impoverished country has weapons of massive destruction is absolutely terrifying. How the hell did that come to pass just five years after Kim assumed power? Did the United Nations, an organization set up by the international community to ensure the atrocities of WWII never happened again, forget that the world didn’t take Hitler seriously when he wanted to make Germany great again by getting rid of the Jews (and then later the Catholics, and then later everyone else). Because if they had remembered, they would not have ignored Kim playing around with rocket

launchers back in 2012. They would’ve slapped that errant child into his place and took away his nuclear toys, his nuclear experts and his marmalade jars of plutonium and uranium.

But they didn’t. And now it would appear that we are on the brink of a nuclear war. So I’m thinking I not only need to change the date of my fictional global war for the Sunset Rising Trilogy, I need to write a prequel.  What do you think?  Leave your comments below because I’d love to get a discussion going. We should all be outraged that no one has done anything to stop North Korea.

Peace,

I’m getting sooooo pumped to finally share Geri and Sean’s adventures on the shores of Shag Lake! So far, advance reviewer feedback is giving me a warm fuzzy and really boosting my confidence as a writer. Here are few things my readers have had to say:

“I’m only 5% of the way in (still in Ch 1 from Geri’s perspective) and I’m impressed by how well-crafted Shag Lake is. The writing is masterful!” – Jeffrey

“I have just finished it and it is brilliant. You are incredibly talented I loved it so much.” – Myrna

“Folklore with a touch of Roswell, realistic love and characters you want to know more about will have any reader eager for more.” – Ellen

“I would definitely recommend this to fans of X-Files or the Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout, as well as anyone who loves romance with a sci-fi twist.” – Nicki

Hopefully the reviews will wet your appetite to pick up Shag Lake when it’s released July 13, 2017! And while I can only sit tight and anxiously gnash away at my nails for the next few days, you can pick up a free copy of Shag Lake Prequel: The Kiss and/or enter my Giveaway for a $50 Amazon Gift Card or one of six ecopies of Shag Lake (only a few days left on the giveaway!).

Or, if you’re as psyched as I am for the release of Shag Lake, you can preorder your copy to be delivered automatically to your ereader
