Ian Lewis prefers not to be bound by a particular genre. Though the inspiration for his work varies, it often finds roots in something he dreamt. He strives for a gritty realism and maintains an interest in the humanity of his characters. His hope is that readers find themselves haunted by his stories in the sense that the narrative sticks with them long after they've finished reading, leaving them with a subtle restlessness for more. ...more

The working title is "The Reeve Book One: Absence of Light." It's an alternate version of North America, one in which the world has been plunged into darkness due to a societal collapse at some point in the past. So instead of science, technology, and culture advancing the way it did in reality, the world is stunted and still trying to catch up. Because the past has diverged from the path we know, the rate and order in which events unfold is entirely different, which will make for some interesting and unexpected nuances to this world. The backdrop is very much a fantasy, a western, and Batman all thrown into a blender.

Once arriving in this world, I would seek out Logan Hale, the main protagonist, who is a Sheriff type of character charged with protecting his city. I would try to convince him to go after the woman he loves or else forget about her altogether, because his failure to do either one of those things will cause him to make a very costly mistake down the road, one that will threaten to destroy his city. Or maybe I wouldn't do so. Otherwise, you as the reader would be deprived of conflict, which is what makes for good fiction. Stay tuned.(less)

After that, I plan to read (or rather re-read) Volume 3 of the Knightfall trilogy, KnightsEnd. I'm re-reading the Batman stories partly for fun, and partly for research. I wanted to get reacquainted with the character since there will be some heavy Batman influences in a new series I'm working on. I might be able to squeeze in "Brideshead Revisited" by Evelyn Waugh after that. If I get ambitious, I'd consider the Dark Tower series by Stephen King, but that might be a ways out.(less)

New release: Terminus

It’s release day! I’m excited to announce that my latest novel, Terminus, is now available for purchase! What started as a somewhat uninspired character in a short story on the Promptly Written Podcast has now come to fruition as a full-length homage to spy/espionage fiction. While “homage” can be a dirty word, carrying with it all the trite, derivative implications one finds in such mimicry, an h Read more of this blog post »

Terminus by Ian Lewis
“That was going to be the razor’s edge balance he’d have to manage, weaving in and out of the subterfuge in such a way as to control the situation, though he knew deep down that at some point, he’d have to step out far enough to initiate...something. What that was, he didn’t yet know. He only knew it meant certain danger.”

“The story was that Baird Wensum almost made it. He somehow snaked through to the outside, crossed the prison yard, and stole a car from the employee lot. Whether anyone would've caught up with him is arguable, because Wensum only got a quarter mile down the road before rolling the car in a ditch. His neck snapped somewhere between the shoulder and the corn field.”

Ian Lewis, Terminus

“I’ve been haunting the ones I love.”
Ian Lewis, The Blinding End

“The animal tang of combat was in her mouth, that unavoidable rush of death flirtation and promise of discomfort washing over her body tight and coiled for the expenditure of all her energy. Whether it came at her in twos or threes, the setup was enough to make one swoon at the potential peril of it all: a neighborhood overrun by madmen, the meek cowering, and the desperate incursion of a few brave souls of which she was one.”
Ian Lewis, Villains

“Man-child” was a fitting nickname. There was nothing complex about the way Wilbert spoke, thought, or behaved. Without sufficient stimulus, he was content to simply shut down and glaze over, amused with nothing to fill his head at all except for the world passing by him in ways he could never understand. He’d only come alive when enraged, and then his mind would flood itself crimson awash in the stark and utter urge to destroy.”
Ian Lewis, Villains

“Small towns usually have their share of petty larceny or domestic disturbances too. Graehling Station is no different. The repeat offenders make their rounds like the parking-lot carnivals that pass through in the stinking heat of summer.”
Ian Lewis, The Camaro Murders

“The Upper Territory. It’s not Heaven, and time spent won’t keep you out of Hell. It’s somewhere in between, and it’s clear that none of us negotiate the terms of our existence.”
Ian Lewis, The Camaro Murders

“All I know for sure is the past doesn’t always stay put. Maybe that’s one of life’s hard-knock lessons. Or maybe it’s just bad luck.”
