Great Question!

So, writer's block is a term I actually abhor. It's the thing that happens when there is no idea at the moment. And sitting in front of the computer screen with nothing happening is frustrating, but as soon as I start to think of it as a block, it gets worse. I tend to think of it as a lull, a nothing, as opposed to a force working against me.

That said.

The first thing to do when staring into nothing is to leave the screen for a moment. Beating your head into the glow-plate is going to do noone any good. So I don't do it.

Instead, go somewhere else. Don't DO something else, don't distract yourself from the writing. But find a place that's similar to the setting your characters face, or at least can be imagined that way. Then be your character. Look around. What's happening? What challenges do you face? How can you overcome them?

By going out into the world and becoming your characters, you'll find that the story starts to flow naturally. Everything that happens does so for a reason, and everything happens naturally. So don't stop thinking your book, but think it in a different spot. A better spot. A spot where the terrain itself gives you that spark of inspiration you need.(less)

On Going Home to Spocon

For the last seven years, Esther and I have watched our writing career lift off the ground.  We’re under solicited submission to Baen, we’ve got a well-loved urban fantasy series, we’ve got stories in anthologies from a whole host of different publishers.  We’ve appeared as pros and dealers at WorldCon, World Fantasy, and Westercon in addition to our regional conventions.  Every time we release so
