Excerpt from TURNING UP THE HEAT
“When my mama made me join the church choir, all those years ago in Nola, I began imagining what destiny had planned for me. Even after that bastard DeGeorges and his ilk beat me to pulp and put me in the hospital, I never lost faith. I knew someday I’d be contributing to the world the best I could, and paying it forward to help others, stuff like that. Moving to New York was the second best thing that’s ever happened to me, and has enlightened me how to render help for those I love.” His soft French accent held me captive as he shared his thoughts, and I was ever his avid listener. Although he’d shared much of his past before, I never grew tired of hearing his lilting voice. “What’s the first best thing that’s ever happened to you?” I queried softly, hoping what his answer would be. Mark kissed my nose and smiled, displaying two perfect dimples I’ve kissed many times. “You are, my love. I wanted to find your mother, for you, because no one has a happy, complete life without the benefit of family.” My anger with him dissipated as if it never existed. His tender words and how he’d gone to such lengths to find my mother made my heart soar. “I want us to have a sweet life, my pipsqueak,” he added. “The PI also informed me he knows where my father is, too, so I told him to contact him for me. Still waiting to hear back, but I’m kind of excited. What do you think?” Snuggling deeper into his warm embrace, I sighed. “Sounds like there’s going to be a lot of meets and greets with strangers in the future.” “Yeah, I know.” “Where did you find my mother? And how did she react when you spoke with her?” “One thing at a time. Seems to me she felt she had some legitimate reasons for taking off, but it’s up to her to share them with you. In fact, she insisted.” Trying to wrap my head around the fact I was soon to reunite with the woman who’d abandoned me, it came as no surprise my resentment for her treachery still burned. “Oh? I can’t think of one damn, justifiable reason for a woman to leave her husband and child.” “You’ll just have to hear her out and draw your own conclusions, Malibu,” he replied.“You’re not going to tell me why, then?” “No.” I knew Mark well enough to realize once he made up his mind, it was useless to pursue a topic. Heaving a disappointed sigh, I asked, “So where’s she been all this time?” “We found her living in Jamaica. And, do you want to know the weirder part?” My brows arched up to my hairline. “Is there a weirder part?” Mark nodded. “Yeah. Not certain how you’re gonna feel about this, cause I don’t, but according to the PI, your mama is acquainted with my father.” “You gotta be kidding me,” I snorted. “And to think you said last Thanksgiving was one for the record books. Just how are they acquainted?” “Not sure yet, but he’s looking into it.” I rubbed my head to reactivate this numb brain of mine. Whew. Then I recalled the novel I’d been editing for Priscilla. That this stuff happens in real life was a true eye opener. Two bellies chose that moment to growl with hunger. Although Mark’s revelations had my emotions in flux, they didn’t dim my appetite. “Think you still might reconsider making those Zeppoles?” I suggested. “Maybe I’ll let you off easy and settle for some scrambled eggs, to match my jumbled thoughts.” “In a minute. Mind moving off my lap for a sec?” he replied, as if he hadn’t just sent my world into an emotional maelstrom. I uncurled my body from his and groaned. “I was so comfy. Good thing it’s Monday, because you’d never get to work on time” I looked at my watch. “Damn, I’m gonna to be so late to the office. Priscilla’s gonna shoot me.” “No, she’s not,” Mark replied. “I called her yesterday, and told her you’d be needing the day off.” “You called my boss on a Sunday?” “She didn’t care. Said to tell you enjoy the day.” “Well, that’s cool,” I shared, pleased to spend another day with my love. “Anyway, I’d never be able to focus on my job, not with this crazy information on my plate.” “Ha. You don’t know the half of it. Why don’t you have a seat in the living room, and I’ll be with you in a minute?” “What about breakfast?” “Breakfast can wait. Told you earlier I had two surprises, remember?” Nodding, I settled myself on the couch and muttered, “If this next surprise is anything like the first, I might not survive.” When Mark joined me minutes later, his engaging smile dismissed my apprehension. That he rocked back and forth on his heals and had both hands tucked behind his back would have made me laugh, had I been in a mood for jokes. “Which hand do you pick?” he asked. “The one that makes the Zeppoles,” I replied with a yawn that couldn’t be helped. “Come on, give over. Which hand, Pipsqueak?” I pointed to the one with the tattoo Poncho pecked on earlier, and to my surprise, Mark bent down on one knee. Taking my left hand in his, he flipped open a silver box with his thumb, the logo of a famous jewelry store etched on the top. My tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth. Resting in a bed of white velvet was an enormous emerald ring. The oval stone was surrounded with a diamond halo, and more diamonds decorated the prongs and the band – it looked like a ring out of a fairy tale, and was the most beautiful piece of jewelry I’d ever seen. “Malibu, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife? I promise to cherish you for the rest of our lives, and to cook all our meals. I’d love to have children with you someday. I know you’ll be a fantastic mother, considering the way you care for that damn bird.”
“Oh, my God, Mark, you want to get married?” He blew an exasperated sigh. “What the heck have I been saying? Please, say you’ll marry me, Cherie`.” If ever a woman’s heart beat into an abnormal rhythm due to a marriage proposal, it was mine. I slid off the couch and knelt before him. Wrapping my arms around his neck, I whispered, “I’d be thrilled to marry you. Only…” Mark’s concerned expression startled me. “Shoot, Malibu, you don’t like the ring,” he said. “I chose the emerald because it matches the color of your eyes, but if you’d prefer a traditional diamond, I can…” “Oh, no! Don’t even think about it, darling. I love this ring and will treasure it always. I was only going to say it might be untimely to steal Pris and Uncle’s thunder, by announcing our engagement so close to their wedding.” The relief on his face was profound. “Already told Priscilla my plans to ask you to marry me yesterday, when I called about your having the day off. She’s delighted for us, by the way.” “Really?” Mark chuckled. “Yep. She even asked what the hell took me so long. So, ya gonna accept this emerald engagement ring, or not?”***

Lament for the Dead Hairdryer
I’m sure most of you ladies know, and
probably some of you guys, when your hair is soaking wet after your shower and
the hairdryer quits, it’s like a betrayal to humankind.
Not to mention to your pride.
My hair looks like crap when it’s not
blown out (not that it’s great anyway), but I take it as a personal affront
when I can’t style it due to a technical demise.
Here are some suggestions to alleviate this
crisis when it happens to you, and it will:
DON’T BE CHEAP: Keep a spare dryer on
hand, especially if yours is older than dirt. Mine has been giving me the fidgets
for over six months, but I’ve always been able to revive it, once I’ve given it
a good shake and a choking. Tonight, though, it bit the dust. I may cremate it…
KEEP A FLATIRON ON HAND: Flatirons are
not kind to fine hair like mine, but is better than nothing, if you must go out
in public.
HAVE A DECENT HAT OR TWO ON HAND (OR
HEAD), FOR EMERGENCIES:

enclosed (enough said). You still may end up looking silly, and folks may point
at you and giggle, but nobody will notice how much your hairdo sucks. Or, if you're sideways...
?
CHOOSE A HUSBAND WHO’S A GOOD SPORT, OR A HAT PERSON: My
husband is game enough to hit the store when I’m looking uglier than usual, and
I’m too embarrassed to leave the house. The point is: Marry well.
