I'm so excited to be hosting the lovely Chanda Stafford, author of FIRST!
Seventeen-year-old Mira works on a farm in the ruins of Texas, along with all of the other descendants of the defeated rebels. Though she’s given her heart to Tanner, their lives are not their own.
When Socrates, a powerful First, chooses Mira as his Second, she is thrust into the bewildering world of the rich and influential. Will, a servant assigned to assist her, whispers of rebellion, love, and of a darker fate than she’s ever imagined.
With time running out, Mira must decide whether to run to the boy she left behind, to the boy who wants her to live, or to the man who wants her dead.

Will fidgets in the doorway. Wearing all black, he’s just another shadow, except for the whites of his eyes and teeth as he flashes me a brief, humorless smile.“You looked pretty stressed out at dinner. How about we take a walk?”For a few seconds, I think about refusing, it’s just past midnight, after all, but then he takes my hand in his. Electricity flutters within me, like so many moths to a summer’s flame. “Where are we going?”“Outside.” He cracks a crooked smile. “Don’t worry, you’re safe with me.”I chew on my bottom lip as he leads me into the crisp night air. All around us, eerie sounds shatter the stillness. Cicadas keep up a raucous rhythm, an owl hoots, and a lonely chorus of coyotes begin their nightly serenade. Then silence. A rabbit squeals, and its shrill scream brings a chill down my spine. Dinner is served, at least for one of the night’s denizens. After a few minutes, the cicadas return to their song. When we stop at the far end of the courtyard, Will drops my hand and leans against the stone wall. He stares into the night sky, as if contemplating something. “I’m sorry,” he says. My eyes search his, but in the darkness I can’t tell what he’s thinking. “For what?”“I never should have kissed you.”The corners of my mouth twitch as memories of his fiery embrace consume me, as well as what happened afterward. “Me, too. I never should have hit you.”He chuckles. “I deserved it. Especially now that you know, well, everything. It wasn’t fair to you.”Silence descends between us, filling the gaps between the words we can never say. Should I tell him what I’ve been thinking? That I should back out and become the person I want to be, not the one everyone thinks I should become?“I heard an old saying once,” Will says, his low voice interrupting my internal dialogue. “It was ‘a penny for your thoughts.’ My dad told me that it meant you wanted to know what someone was thinking.”I take a deep breath, feeling bold. “Do you ever wonder what might have happened if I hadn’t been chosen?”He shrugs, a minute gesture almost hidden by the darkness. “We’d never have met. You’d be getting married to that farm boy and Socrates would have chosen someone else, but at least you’d live a normal life.”A tear burns its way to the surface and slides down my cheek at the thought of never having met him. Never having him in my life. “Yeah, I guess you’re right.”“If I’m grateful for anything in this disaster, it’s that I met you. I can’t even think about what my life would be like without you. It’s just,” he shakes his head, “I can’t explain it.”“Me neither,” I murmur. He’s right. Before Socrates picked me, my life was boring and predictable. Will adds color to a world that I’d always seen in black and white.“Come on.” He grabs my hand and tugs me along the side of the wall.“Where are we going?” He doesn’t answer, and a sliver of unease snakes through me. “Will?” I try to jerk my hand back, but his grip is like iron, unyielding and unbreakable.“Just trust me,” he says. “I’ll never do anything to hurt you.”“You still didn’t answer my question.” My feet scramble for purchase on the sandy ground, but my soft-soled shoes are useless. “We’re almost there.” He stops at a small door, half-hidden behind a storage shed. Before I can protest further, he jiggles the knob until it pops open. The wilderness outside beckons, whispering of freedom and other things I shouldn’t allow myself to feel. After scanning the dense trees for threats, Will leads me into the other side. Once there, he turns to face me, taking my hands in his. “Before we go any further, I just want you to know—“A piercing whistle interrupts him. His back stiffens and he scowls as a shadowy figure slips out from behind the husk of a dead tree. The short, squat man with a shaved head smirks. “Are you two lovebirds finished? You know the old man doesn’t like to be kept waiting.”Will reluctantly releases me. “Yeah, we’re ready.”I glance from one man to the other. “What’s going on?”Excitement floods Will’s face. “We’re getting you out of here.”

Well, winter finally decided to show up...It's cold. It's...
Well, winter finally decided to show up...
It's cold. It's windy. Perfect weather to snuggle up with a good book, so I decided it's giveaway time!
I just left Barnes & Noble with my kiddos, and I had a conversation with someone there. If I was given the option of $100 from this person or a review of my book, what would I choose? The answer was easy. I'd choose the book review every time. (Yes, even a less than stellar review.) I figured it's time to show my appreciation for anyone who has taken the time to do so!

Now on to the fun! If you haven't yet heard of Ryan Graudin's upcoming Wolf by Wolf, you need to add this one to your TBR. Holy premise. Are you ready for this??
The year is 1956, and the Axis powers of the Third Reich and Imperial Japan rule the world. To commemorate their Great Victory over Britain and Russia, Hitler and Emperor Hirohito host the Axis Tour: an annual motorcycle race across their conjoined continents. The victor is awarded an audience with the highly reclusive Adolf Hitler at the Victor's ball.
Yael, who escaped from a death camp, has one goal: Win the race and kill Hitler. A survivor of painful human experimentation, Yael has the power to skinshift and must complete her mission by impersonating last year's only female victor, Adele Wolfe. This deception becomes more difficult when Felix, Adele twin's brother, and Luka, her former love interest, enter the race and watch Yael's every move. But as Yael begins to get closer to the other competitors, can she bring herself to be as ruthless as she needs to be to avoid discovery and complete her mission?
Wolf by Wolf is pitched as Code Name Verity meets Inglourious Basterds, and just reading the summary makes my heart race. And so, I'm thrilled to have the opp to give you some exclusive bonus material:

Once upon a different time, there was a girl who lived in a kingdom of death. Her biggest fear was needles. It wasn’t the metal itself, or the insta-pain of it breaking through levels of epidermis and subcutaneous fat. It wasn’t the liquid bubbling in the far reaches of the syringe. It wasn’t the blue gloves or the steady push of another’s fingers. The fear that lived inside Yael was bigger than these things. The thing that made her blood run cold was the idea of the power behind it all. That someone else, lingering behind surgical masks and latex gloves, could change her. That with a single punch of metal and plastic they could alter her forever. It was a fear she lived over and over in the camp. Because when they came, they always had needles. Needles to carve their numbers on the soft inside of her arm. Needles to jab and poke every available vein. Yael never really knew what was inside them. What leaked from their airtight chambers into the blue of her veins. But she did know, that because of it, she would never be the same. Dr. Geyer—his chemicals and syringes—stretched her body into something impossible, something so beyond himself that he regarded her with awe in his sapphire eyes. Even years later, countless miles and months separated from the experiments of her childhood, Yael’s throat squeezed small, to the size of a drinking straw, when she saw any sort of needle. And this, of course, is why she faced them. The first wolf was to hide the numbers. It wasn’t beautiful. It was a sloppy, wavery thing. Ink more navy than black. Yael watched every second of its birth. Her shoulders hunched, tiny mountains of skin and bone. Tendons and veins stood out from her wrist, like the strings of an instrument ready to be plucked. She clenched her teeth and waited for the needle to fall. The other wolves were neater. She went to a man on Luisen Street, who had a setup in his back closet. He gave her three wolves: one for her mother, one for Babushka and another for Miriam. And as the years went on there were more. Life in the resistance was dangerous. Full of loss. The wolves crammed her skin, jostling for space all the way to her left elbow. Five of them. Black and always running, striving against her skin. No matter how many times Yael changed, the wolves were always there. The only thing about her that ever stayed the same.

TBR what?
So, my summer TBR list is growing faster than my pregnant belly, but having to put up my feet should give me an excuse to read (and to send my husband to chase after my boys)
What's a TBR you might ask?
I took the question to a group at dinner (after they'd had multiple drinks and me, being sober, could remember every one. Score.)
My favorites:
TBR: Totally Badass Ringworm (what???)
TBR: To Be Rapped (Haha! If I was talented enough, I would totally rap about this)
TBR: Telepathically Brained Raptors (I think they'd just left a showing of Jurassic World)
TBR: Terribly Bred Rabbits (I don't even know)
TBR: Trending By Region (Probably the most intelligent guess. No offense, other guys)
No, TBR in the book world means To Be Read.
There are several GMMG titles (my pub) on my TBR, but I won't overwhelm you with all of them.
1. Lifer by Beck Nicholas
The Bourne Identity meets Under the Never Sky in this intergalactic tale of love and deception from debut novelist Beck Nicholas.(I'm already hooked)
Asher is a Lifer, a slave aboard the spaceship Pelican. A member of the lowest rung of society, she must serve the ship’s Officials and Astronauts as punishment for her grandparents' crimes back on Earth. The one thing that made life bearable was her illicit relationship with Samuai, a Fishie boy, but he died alongside her brother in a freak training accident.
Still grieving for the loss of her loved ones, Asher is summoned to the upper levels to wait on Lady, the head Official’s wife and Samuai’s mother. It is the perfect opportunity to gather intel for the Lifer’s brewing rebellion. There’s just one problem—the last girl who went to the upper levels never came back.
On the other side of the universe, an alien attack has left Earth in shambles and a group called The Company has taken control. Blank wakes up in a pond completely naked and with no memory, not even his real name. So when a hot girl named Megs invites him to a black-market gaming warehouse where winning means information, he doesn’t think twice about playing.
But sometimes the past is better left buried. As Asher and Blank’s worlds collide, the truth comes out—everyone has been lied to...
(Holyyyyyyyyyy. This premise. Seems like there's going to be a lot going on between the pages... but those are the types of stories I love, so this was an obvi pick.)
2. A Whispered Darkness by Vanessa Barger
When Claire Mallory's father leaves, her mom moves them to a new town and into a dilapidated Victorian house. The old house creaks and whistles, and smells . . . well, like it's been abandoned for years. (I have a thing for haunted houses.) But as the nights grow longer and the shadows take on substance, Claire wonders if the strange sounds and occurrences might be more than the house showing its age. (Yessss) Just as things start to pick up in Claire's love life, her mother becomes possessed. (Great timing, Mom) In an attempt to save her mother and their new home, Claire enlists the help of two boys, each of whom is interested in Claire for very different reasons. (This, I like) As she chooses one boy over the other, something dangerous is unleashed, (is this because of the boy???) and the spirits make their move. They aren’t content to moan and scream inside Claire’s house, or even control her mom. They want a taste of freedom, and they'll use Claire to get it. But is Claire strong enough to fight off the evil spirits, or will they claim her and her mom before it's all over?
Clearly, I enjoy ghosts (although that word is taboo in the OBT series, so spirits), and this one seems to have an Amityville/Insidious feel to it. Sold.
3. Nobody's Goddess by Amy McNulty (She has a great first name, right? And I had the pleasure of meeting Amy in NYC last month.)
In a village of masked men, (I'm already buying the book) magic compels each man to love only one woman and to follow the commands of his “goddess” without question. (Where can I get this magic? *eyes husband's laundry pile) A woman may reject the only man who will love her if she pleases, but she will be alone forever. And a man must stay masked until his goddess returns his love—and if she can’t or won’t, he remains masked forever.
Seventeen-year-old Noll isn't in the mood to celebrate. Her childhood friends have paired off and her closest companion, Jurij, found his goddess in Noll’s own sister. Desperate to find a way to break this ancient spell, Noll instead discovers why no man has ever chosen her. (Okay, I need to know why)
Thus begins a dangerous game between the choice of woman versus the magic of man. And the stakes are no less than freedom and happiness, life and death—and neither is willing to lose. Those are pretty high stakes.
Alright, the whole magic versus free will thing is awesome. The concept of the masks had me at hello, but I have so many questions so this one is def on the list.

Harper is used to her family being hounded by protestors. Her father runs the company that trademarked the “Memtex” procedure to wipe away sad memories, and plenty of people think it shouldn’t be legal. Then a new demonstrator crosses her path, Neil, who’s as persistent as he is hot. Not that Harper’s noticing, since she already has a boyfriend.
When Harper suffers a loss, she’s shocked her father won’t allow her to get the treatment, so she finds a way to get it without his approval. Soon afterward, she’s plagued with strange symptoms, including hallucinations of a woman who is somehow both a stranger, yet incredibly familiar. Harper begins to wonder if she is delusional, or if these are somehow memories.
Together with Neil, who insists he has his own reasons for needing answers about the real dangers of Memtex, Harper begins her search for the truth. What she finds could uproot all she’s ever believed about her life…

Tell us a bit about what your dad does and how that impacts on you.
My dad owns a company that offers a medical procedure called Memtex. It’s designed to “soften” people’s traumatic memories so they don’t bother them anymore. It’s pretty amazing.
The procedure has just been approved for use with teens and some people don’t think that’s a good idea. It can be difficult to deal with what people think of my dad, but it doesn’t really impact me. I’m usually pretty busy with school, my boyfriend Josh and Win, my best friend.
But there’s more to it than that, isn’t it? Didn’t you have the procedure?
(Shifts in seat) How did you hear about that? It’s not supposed to be public knowledge. (Pause) Okay, I did have the procedure. Something happened to me and I needed it. My dad didn’t know about it.
Did the procedure help you?
It did. (smiles)
Did you have any problem with side effects?
(Looks around) Who told you about that? It was Josh wasn’t it? (Shakes her head.) I keep telling him that I’m fine, but he won’t listen. My boyfriend hero-worships my dad so he’s always trying to get on his good side.
I’ve had a few problems since I had the procedure. Nothing big. Some… I guess you would call them hallucinations.
What are you seeing?
No big deal. (Shrugs) They’re a bit like a dream, things are a bit confused and don’t make a lot of sense.
You seem nervous.
(Looks around) Who is going to know about this?
What is it you’re afraid of Harper?
In these…visions, or whatever you want to call them, my mom is there. Except she’s not my mom. She looks nothing like my mom. She’s a stranger.
And?
(Takes a deep breath) And I’m not convinced it’s a vision. And that means the woman I’ve grown up with isn’t really my mom, but why would she and my dad pretend that she is? And that makes me wonder just what else in my life might be a lie.
How far are you willing to go to find out the truth?
I’m willing to do whatever I have to.
Whoa! Sounds like Harper has a bit of a catch-22 situation. She could find out what really happened, but she might not like what she finds...
