Hotel Miramar excerpt

A hunched woman, struggling to hold a sterling silver dome, came from the shadows and shambled towards their table in the multiple flashlight beams. She was pale and humpbacked in the light of their torches, wearing baggy clothes that weren’t her own. Mr and Mrs Halifax were trying to keep up appearances, even if it wasn’t working, but this waitress (using the term loosely) had decided: what’s the point? She was letting it all hang out. She had the face of a burrowing creature. The nose was substantial. It was more than that — she sported a muzzle. A mole, yes, the woman reminded Peter of a velvety, furry mole with that strange cone-shaped face coming to a point at the nose, just like the subterranean nearsighted mole. But, dear Jesus in Heaven, it was the skin she wore that grossed out and engrossed the Armstrongs, especially Peter who stared, as kids tend to do. The skin was lifeless, riddled with small raised lumps. Swollen eyelids which seemed to be sleeping, slits for eyes. But she could see, oh yes, because she brought the Armstrongs their supper…and what a supper — sushi-style was an understatement.
