Karen Akins writes humorous, light sci-fi for young adults and the young in spirit. When not writing or reading, she loves lightsaber dueling with her two sons and forcing her husband to watch BBC shows with her.

Karen has been many things in her life: an archery instructor, drummer for the shortest-lived garage band in history, and a shockingly bad tic-tac-toe player.

Well, I have two projects I'm working on, but they are both still very much in the "in-progress" stage so I can't share very many details. They're both retellings of classic tales with fun sci-fi twists. I like to think they could exist in LOOP's world even though I don't have any cameos planned. (But, hey, Shifters can pop up anywhere, anytime, so who knows?)

One is focused on friendship more than romance (which, when I look back to my teen years, those were really the relationships that were more influential to me than relationships with boys, to be honest. But, of course, there will be plenty of snogging because...snogging). The other is a dark comedy.

Hopefully, I'll have good news to share soon!(less)

In the dedication for LOOP, I mention that I wrote it in memory of my friend Tim Berry who died in high school. (There's much of Tim in Finn.) You can read more about Tim here: http://www.karenakins.com/2014/10/wha...

After his death, someone at our high school had an idea to hold a benefit talent show to raise money to help his family with medical expenses for his sister who was in the accident and still in the hospital.

I played percussion in our school's band, and one of our friends approached me about joining with a few others to form a band, and hey, could I play trap? I told them that I'd never played trap, and I usually played timpani. Him: "How different can it be?"

Very different.

Oh, so very different.

We got together one Tuesday night in our friend's garage, and we were DISMAL. The only thing I remember about the practice is throwing my drumsticks on the floor near tears and saying, "Can we maybe just have a tambourine rather than the drum set?"

Needless to say, we left the performances up to the semi-talented people, and I sold suckers to help raise money instead.(less)

Happy Hoverboard Day!

For those of you who don't have it written in your planner like me, today is the day that Marty McFly arrived at thirty years in the future in Back To The Future 2. You know what that means. Hoverboards for everyone!

I know. Science has failed us.

Today is also Loop's first birthday! Coincidence? Yes. But a ridiculously amazing one. (Plus, hoverboards have a cameo in Twist because THEY ARE GOING Read more of this blog post »
