Book Review: We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
Book Review: We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
As a reader, this story is absolutely haunting. The narrator Merricat is as endearing as she is sinister and that combination is compelling. As a writer, I can appreciate the skill of this little horror story and the profound characterizations of Merricat and her sister Constance. One sister is bold, the other shy; both are a little off. Very interesting and the storytelling is the best! Jackson weaves her words delicately but with such power--I'm tempted to read it twice just to savor the perfection of the writing. The precise way the tension is built in exploiting the readers' fears, the intense descriptions and the actions are the smoothest you'll read. The layers peel away and the reader connects the psychological threads. If you're a lover of horror stories, put this at the top of your list. If you're a writer of mystery or horror, put this at the top of your list. The best ghost of all in this story isn't supernatural.
