For 20 years, from the late 1990s through the mid-2010s, I was executive director of NYTE, a nonprofit organization dedicated to NYC theater, especially the indie theater sector. I ran a popular listings and review website (nytheatre[dot]com) where I reviewed thousands of shows. Our company also published annual anthologies of new plays (the Plays and Playwrights series, which ran for eleven years), along with several other volumes of new plays.

We also created the first regularly scheduled podcast series dedicated to NYC theater. I created and edited Indie Theater Now, a digital platform for discovery of contemporary American drama.

As the initiator and host of two widely attended convocations in 2005 and 2008, I helped define and brand the

That was how I dreamed myself to sleep at night. Now that I am much older ... I think I still want to go there. What a serene, happy, loving place to be in.(less)

So I find that I have to make myself start (scheduling a specific time helps!): just sit at the computer, and begin (or pick up where I left off). Then comes the really hard part: keeping at it. I will look at social media, get up and take a walk, distract myself any way I can think of. But inevitably I will come to a place where the flow kicks in and I am able to keep going: inspiration magically overtakes me and I get lost in the writing for a nice long, productive time.(less)

In Print!

Friends, it's official: Indie Theater Guy is now published as a Kindle ebook and as a paperback.

The book only took a few months to write and edit and publish. But it took 61 years before that to live it. It's very satisfying to have these stories from my life in virtual and actual print. I hope folks enjoy them.

Made me want to read Levi's works, which I think is a great result for a biography of a writer. This is a very non-traditional approach to biography, and a lot is missing from this account of Levi's life. But it's filled with lots of intriguing and e ...more

“Piglet sidled up to Pooh from behind.
"Pooh!" he whispered.
"Yes, Piglet?"
"Nothing," said Piglet, taking Pooh's paw. "I just wanted to be sure of you.”

Jon Kabat-Zinn
“For the most part, we share the desire to live our lives in peace, to pursue our private yearnings and creative impulses, to contribute in meaningful ways to a larger purpose, to fit in and belong and be valued for who we are, to flourish as individuals and as families, and as societies of purpose and of mutual regard, to live in individual dynamic balance, which is health, and in a collective dynamic balance, what used to be called the “commonweal,” which honors our differences and optimizes our mutual creativity and the possibility for a future free from wanton harm and from that which threatens what is most vital to our well-being and our very being.”
Jon Kabat-Zinn, Coming to Our Senses: Healing Ourselves and the World Through Mindfulness

Jon Kabat-Zinn
“Guess what? When it comes right down to it, wherever you go, there you are. Whatever you wind up doing, that’s what you’ve wound up doing. Whatever you are thinking right now, that’s what’s on your mind. Whatever has happened to you, it has already happened. The important question is, how are you going to handle it? In other words, “Now what?”

“The tourists who come to visit may be disappointed if they can't see the mountain clearly, but it's all the same to the mountain--seen or unseen, in sun or clouds, broiling or frigid, it just sits, being itself.”
