Excerpt from 'Mourner's Black" by Nina Waters, from Mobbing Midnight

Nina Waters has some historical fiction to share in the anthology. Coldly beautiful, perfectly cruel, and it will tangle in the back of your head long after you are finished reading.

"...When my heart stopped beatin’ out tattoo, my breath got back to normal, I could hear the noise. Slow and rhythmic, it was. Metal on metal. I thought of everythin’ it could be and shivered. I crept until I could see ‘round the wood to the front of the house.

I’d thought of many things, but none like what it was. I mean, I thought it might be someone workin’ a weapon, but no one like her.

Clothed all in black, she was, like a fine Lady, and beautiful. She sat in a chair facin’ Papa, her black skirts spread wide round her, a black shawl o’er her shoulders, black gloves on her hands, a black bonnet tied with a black bow under her chin, holdin’ black lace like I ne’er seen, so fine and thin I could see her face through it. Blond was her hair, done in ringlets that framed her face, just like the doll Mama made me when she was laid up afore she died. A black parasol leant ‘gainst the chair next to her, except that betimes looked green or purple, shinin’ in the sun. There she sat, a rifle taken apart in her lap, and she carefully cleanin’ the bore. That was what made the noise I heard..."

Mobbing Midnight: An Anthology of Crows

That's right a cross-genre anthology that centers around crows. The stories I have read so far are bloody brilliant, and I cannot wait to see what else comes in.

We are kickstarting the anthology with the hope of being able to pay all the authors $0.06/word. There are some very cool backer rewards available. $12 for the anthology. Miss previous projects? Want all three anthologies? A $25 pledge will do that.

So support some incredible writers and get some some haunting and beautiful fiction in return.

Check the project out here.

Even if you cannot support us financially, please do spread the word. The authors and I appreciate it!

A new project!

Earlier this year Christy and I successfully funded and published Fight Like a Girl (and have gotten some pretty swell reviews!).

Our current project has a slightly different theme.

"How would an immortal deal with the End Times? The world will inevitably come stumbling into apocalypse, and They will be there to witness it. We want to explore how myths, how fae creatures of all cultures, beings generally seen as eternal (or at least very long-lived) would cope with the end of the world around them. Be it through nuclear incident, religious fervor or rampaging zombies, we are going to discover just What Follows…"

If you would like to see who else is writing for the book, read more about what is going on, and help make this happen! Please check us out.
