C. Three things on your bucket list
Seeing my books turned into movies/TV shows.
Right before the pandemic, I visited Amsterdam and the Amalfi coast. In Amsterdam, I stayed a few miles from where my great-grandmother grew up. Less than 50 miles from my great-grandfather’s birthplace. It was pretty neat and I’d love to take my adult daughters.
Retire from my day job and write full time.
D. What triggered this specific story?
Well, it was actually an idea from one of my book besties, Amanda Linsmeier. We have a group chat and one day she posted: “I said it before lol. I want you to do a cooking reality tv competition enemies to lovers, competitors who fall in love. Lots of food… and sex. And snark.”
I gave the couple a backstory of attending culinary school together where they first fostered their disdain for each other, but Amanda’s message pretty much sums up An Acquired Taste.

Blurb: May the best chef win…
After four years at the country’s top culinary school and several years as head chef in her mother’s restaurant, Rowan Townsend has built a notable reputation. Her farm-to-table collard greens have long been bringing everyone to the yard, but limits on the restaurant’s size have led to long waits. Looking to expand the restaurant, she enters a televised chef competition. The problem? Her infuriatingly-talented nemesis from culinary school also enters.
To the culinary world, Knox Everheart is restaurant royalty. As much as Rowan wants to deny it, he’s a gifted chef. Rowan knows her arrogant arch-nemesis is confident he’ll win—he’s certainly given her a run for her money more times than she’d like to admit. But this time, she’s ready to show him who’s boss.
Their rivalry soon sparks fireworks in the kitchen and, as the competition heats up, so does Rowan’s attraction to Knox. And somewhere between pasta and gumbo, they both need to decide what’s worth fighting for.

Release day for A captivating touch (Inkspell Publishing)
And it’s release day for A captivaitng touch, the prequel to the other Cavallo brothers’ series, An impossible attraction, An irresistible temptation and The ultimate surrender – all three stories are already out there.
When it comes to men, if physiotherapist Caitlin Sutherland didn’t have bad luck, she’d have no luck at all. To help cope, Caitlin blogs about the men she meets and the bad dates she’d gone on.
While on duty during the annual Wines to Whales bicycle race, a gorgeous, sweaty cyclist walks in and sets her hormones dancing. But he is Don Cavallo; one of the four Cavallo brothers — hotel tycoons, famous as much for their business skills as for the number of beauties seen on their arms.
Billionaire Don Cavallo has his own issues with the other sex. He has yet to find one who is interested in him, not his money or hotels. But when this sexy physio puts her hands on his back, she not only touches his body, but also his heart.
They’ve both been burned before, but neither of them can stop themselves from playing with fire.
Short excerpt:
But it was Don who stood there, hands in his pockets. The streetlights were bright enough for her to see him clearly.
She dropped her hands from their halfway-up position. Oh hell, what had he heard? He came closer. She swallowed.
“Where’s your girlfriend?” was the first thing that popped out of her mouth. Caitlin nearly groaned out load. She looked away and unlocked her car. “Sorry, none of my business,” she mumbled and opened the door.
“She’s just a friend.”
“Did you enjoy your date?” she asked.
He shook his head. “I was watching you the whole night.”
Stunned, she swallowed.
“And you? Did you have a nice time?” he asked.
“I…” At a complete loss, she frantically tried to think of a word, any word. Nothing came to mind. She shook her head. He’s been watching me all night?
He stepped around so the car door was between them. Her hands were resting lightly on the door, her fingers tingling. She vividly remembered how it had felt to touch him.
“Thought so.” His smile was devastating. “I’d like to take you out, Caitlin.”
“As in a date?” she asked, still stunned.
“Yes, Caitlin, as in a date.” He touched her cheek. “There is something here,” he said, and then motioned with his hand between them.
She didn’t move, just stared at him. Was he really asking her out on a date?
“I don’t know what it is, but it’s keeping me awake at night. Let’s try a date and see how we like it. Friday around seven?” he asked. “I’ll pick you up and we’ll have dinner.”
Caitlin stared at him for another minute before she was sure she could string a few words together. “Don, you…me…” She shook her head and grimaced. “We live in two completely different worlds; we have nothing in common. You are…you, the papers are full of your businesses. I’m a physiotherapist from Hermanus. I don’t think—”
“Then don’t. Think, that is.” He smiled. “You do know that you can’t believe everything you read in the papers. And I happen to like this physiotherapist from Hermanus.”
She looked at him a moment longer. This was so not what she should be doing. Hannah’s warning and her own misgivings about him swirled around in her head.
His gaze never left hers.
She was a big girl. And if she prepared herself for the worst, then surely she’d be fine.
“Where? I’ll meet you—”
“I’ll pick you up,” he said and lowered his head.
“You don’t know where I live and I always drive myself,” she managed just before his lips touched hers lightly.

2020
I don’t know about you, but I feel a little bit battered and bruised on this last day of 2020. We were all still praying for the devastating fires in Australia and wondering what Harry and Meghan are going to do now when Covid struck and boom! Everything changed.
We stopped rushing and driving and flying and moving around, giving nature a short break from the devastation we humans tend to wreck on a daily basis. Carbon emissions fell by the largest ever recorded and we’re told Earth now looks greener from space and the oceans are cleaner.
And we had time. Time to just sit, time to think, time to pay attention to those we live with, time to take a breath.
Many people lost their jobs, their livelihood – mostly because most governments seemed to have no idea how to manage this strange and scary pandemic.
Our government was even less equipped to deal with a crisis of this magnitude and the ministers who weren’t looting the Covid fund, kept themselves busy with long speeches about what kind of shoes we can an cannot buy, what and where we should eat and had many, many discussions over several months about whether or not people should buy cigarettes legally. Wasting time when they should’ve made sure we’d received vaccinations in time.
But amidst the chaos, we saw many beautiful things as well – someone singing on a balcony in Italy, a guy inviting someone to dine on her roof while he sat on his (am still wondering what happened next), people reaching out to one another.
Technology made it possible to stay in touch, we ‘Zoomed’ and ‘Microsoft Teams-ed’ and Whatsapp-ed, trying desperately to keep connected with those we can’t visit.
The highlight of the year for us has been the little girl with dark curls, beautiful blue eyes and a winning smile who entered our lives in January – a promise of better things to come.
May 2021 treat us all gentler and kinder. I wish you joy, I wish you peace and above all I wish you love.

Opposites attract
[The original post went up on the Australian Romance Readers Blog https://australianromancereaders.word...]
‘Opposites attract’ is a trope often used in romances and I love writing about it, probably because many moons ago I fell for a guy so very different from me. He comes from a very quiet, well-behaved family. Nobody yells, nobody talks loudly, nobody cries of laugh out loud and certain topics, like pregnancy for instance, simply weren’t discussed.
My people, on the other hand, are very loud, not always well-behaved, there are no sensitive topics, we holler, we cry over everything and we laugh without filters. Hubby was and still is a huge Beatles fan, I prefer Elvis and I love country music. The gorier a movie the better for him, my threshold is Murder she wrote.
But the chemistry was strong, our core values were the same and in the end love won. But I can tell you – the first few years of our lives together were interesting.
While the first thing we consciously notice when we meet someone is their physical appearance, what determines the degree to which we find them attractive is something that lies much deeper. There is an invisible feeling, a subconscious awareness that identifies and respond to a specific person.
Interesting studies have also been done about the role our senses play when we meet someone (e.g. Wedekind’s ‘sweaty t-shirt study https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claus_Wedekind and Athur Aron’s study about couples staring into one another’s eyes https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/0146167297234003) showing how intricate the process of falling in love actually is.
I’ve used this trope of ‘opposites attract’ in Love, in writing, one of the first stories I’ve written. It will be re-released in January 2021 by Inkspell Publishing. The heroine is a romance writer, the hero writes science fiction, she loves her family, believes in happy-ever-afters and is looking for the fairytale. He, on the other hand, is cynical about love and life in general, doesn’t believe happy-ever-afters exist and is definitely not looking for something so ridiculous as a fairytale.
But when they meet, stars align, hearts sigh and something happens they can’t seem to stop no matter how hard they try.
I hope you enjoy reading their story as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it.
Wishing you all a wonderful 2021!

A glass of water with Susan Sands

Today I’m chatting with the lovely author Susan Sands over a glass of water! Her new Christmas romance (Tule Publishing), Noel Alabama is out!
Questions:
A. Quickies
Tea or wine? (what brand/type/cultivar)
Neither, sadly. I have migraines and wine is a killer. Tea has never been my “cup of tea” unless I have a cold. I drink a lot of water and lemonade and such. No fun at all, I’m afraid.
Read or jog?
Read and tennis
Cats or dogs?
Dogs, unless I get rid of my allergic husband of thirty-plus years :-/
Heels or flats?
Flats all the way
Boxers or briefs?
Boxer-briefs
Milk, dark or white chocolate
Dark chocolate, please
Sweet or savoury
Savoury then sweet
Sea or mountains
Sea
B. Five likes and five dislikes
Likes: 1) Kindness 2) Music of almost every genre 3) Good food 4) Dogs/animals

Dislikes: 1) Nastiness 2) Politics 3) Loud noise 4) Bad smells 5) Rude people
C. Three things on your bucket list
1) Travel abroad
2) Publishing goals
3) Grandchildren
D. What triggered this specific story?

Bailey and Seth’s story is a combination of her coming home but on her own terms. I grew up in a small town that I never really seemed part of, though I loved all the people and the place. Bailey’s square-peg-in-a-round-hole feeling only worked itself out when she took matters in her own hands. It’s hard to feel different in your hometown. I relate.
Blurb:
Bailey Boone wasn’t like the other girls in Ministry, Alabama. Her creative soul drove her from home—and Seth McKay—at eighteen. Now she’s home with a film crew to save her current Christmas project—and maybe get that promotion. But will Seth, her ghost of Christmas past, give her a reason to stay?

Proloog – Omdat ons saam is
(Daar was nie plek vir die proloog van Omdat ons saam is nie, so ek plaas dit hier – lekker lees!) Elsa

Dertien jaar gelede
Waar is tannie Barbara?”
“Gaan jy my wegstuur?” vra Conrad.
Nou verstaan ek hoekom Pa so opgewerk geraak het as sy by Ma wou geld leen. “’n Saak maak of iets?”
“Alles. Ma se kas is leeg,” antwoord Conrad.
“Ma se juweliersware ook?” vra Reinier. “Sy het nog …” Hy sluk. “Haar ringe …?”

Tea with author Betty Bolte

Today I’m having tea with Betty Bolte, a fellow RWA author and writer of historical and contemporary romance. The mysterious aspects of the world fascinates her and she loves to include a touch of the inexplicable.
But before we talk about her contemporary romance, Charmed against all odds, let’s find out more about her!
Questions
A. Quickies
Tea or wine? (what brand/type/cultivar) I enjoy Bigelow’s Constant Comment (black tea with orange rind and sweet spice) when it’s chilly outside, perhaps with a dollop of honey. But in the evening, a crisp chardonnay will take the edges off my day.
Read or jog – Definitely read.Cats or dogs – Both!Heels or flats – Flats.Boxers or briefs – Briefs.Milk, dark or white chocolate – Milk, but really, all of the above!Sweet or savoury – Savory.Sea or mountains – Tough one…I prefer the ocean and walking on the beach.
B. Five likes and five dislikes
Likes: long walks; traveling; a good story; meeting my readers; spending time with my family.
Dislikes: politics; dissension; sushi; flavored coffee; rap music.
C. Three things on your bucket list
Australia—I’ve wanted to go since reading The Thornbirds as a teen.
Driving the Florida Keys and visiting Hemingway’s house
Visiting Albuquerque, New Mexico

D. What triggered this specific story?
One thing I wanted to include in Charmed Against All Odds was a “reverse horcrux” concept from the Harry Potter series; instead of finding and destroy the objects, Roxie and Leo had to find and combine the missing charms onto the enchanted bracelet. I knew that Roxie Golden’s story had to be the most meaningful of the three witch sisters as it was the last one to tell. I also knew that her former fiancé Leo King was coming back to town. I was still trying to understand why they broke up in the first place when I heard Phil Collins’ “Against All Odds” on the radio and the story in that song really spoke to the reasons for why Roxie ended the engagement. Thus the title of the book came together.
Blurb:
Loving her brings out the magic in him…
Wedding bells are ringing, but not for Roxie Golden. If she can survive another round of wedding plans, then her life can return to normal. She’s perfectly happy running the bookstore and weaving helpful magical spells. Then one stormy day, her ex-fiancé strolls back into her life with a gift neither of them wants.
Leo King wants to flee the small town for the big city. Forget about the shame he brought upon himself when he abused his magical powers. First, to satisfy his warlock father’s final wish, he must deliver the mysterious box to Roxie’s bookstore.
But when Roxie opens the box, revealing an enchanted bracelet and a quest spell, their plans and their lives are changed forever. Trapped in a reluctant partnership with the woman he once loved, he risks everything—including his heart—for a second chance.

.Kort opsomming:

D. What triggered this specific story?

Actually, my publisher wanted a nanny/cop story, and I volunteered to write it! I live in SoCal and was able to add reality to the drug trafficking book because of my proximity to the border. Plus, I wanted to write a beach book based on places I’ve been around here. Lastly, my hero is based off Chris Pratt. Talk about fun writing! **fans face**
Blurb:
DEA agent Sawyer Hayes came to California in search of a drug cartel leader who slipped through his fingers in El Paso. The link to finding him is Kate Munroe, a nanny for one of his henchmen. The problem? He didn’t expect to be so drawn to a possible suspect. How is he supposed to do his job when his growing feelings for her are clouding his judgment?
Interior designer Kate Munroe’s life is a train wreck. Her parents’ deaths left her with their mounds of debt, she can’t get a job designing even a cubicle, and she’s bunking in her best friend’s spare bedroom. To make ends meet, she’s a nanny to a lonely little boy whose rich father works all the time. Romance is not on her radar. But her hot new neighbor could change her mind, with his broad shoulders and Southern charm. Too bad his secrets could destroy her.DEA agent Sawyer Hayes came to California in search of a drug cartel leader who slipped through his fingers in El Paso. The link to finding him is Kate Munroe, a nanny for one of his henchmen. The problem? He didn’t expect to be so drawn to a possible suspect. How is he supposed to do his job when his growing feelings for her are clouding his judgment?
