Helen's third novel The Latecomers will be published by Little, Brown on November 6, 2018. Told in interweaving timelines, this story spans an American century, bringing steam engines, top hats and suffragettes into brilliant collision with cell phones, 9/11 and ancestry apps.

Helen's poetry, essays, and fiction have appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, literary journals and in anthologies, including SHORT, published in 2014 by Persea Books. Part of my writing the book was an exploration of motherhood--all the many ways there are to be a mother and to mother a child who isn't your biological offspring. (Although I hope I haven't made a case for kidnapping one!) I've already started my next novel which will also revolve around a crime committed by someone who doesn't consider herself a criminal. This time, the crime will be set in the 1800s. We've just renovated an old house in Connecticut and I've gained a lot of knowledge about old houses that I want to put to fictional use! what a steeplejack does

Thanks to a fellowship from the Hawthornden Foundation, I’m back at the 15th century castle just north of Edinburgh where in 2018 I finished writing The Latecomers. The castle has been renovated since then, bringing in serious heat and modernized plumbing and (for better and worse) hi-octane wifi. The renovation, of course, required massive scaffolding which broke a lot of tiles on the slate roof.
