Hi, Skye! Thanks for the great question.

I can't think of anything that is really *like* TBD all together, but here are a few things that are like it in certain ways. If those don't sound right for you, just let me know and I'll think again. :)

Howl's Moving Castle, Diana Wynne Jones - an absolute classic, and the book that Evie is listening to at night. Depending on how you choose to read the book, this is what inspired not just the idea of contract between Evie and the Dragon but also the likely terms of that contract.

Skellig, David Almond - beautifully written story about a mysterious 'being' and its relationship with two children.

A Monster Calls (get the illustrated version if you're interested), Patrick Ness - has a 'monster' being 'summoned' by a teenager in need of help and comfort.

Heart-Shaped Bruise, Tanya Byrne - a brilliant psychological thriller with a fascinating first person narrator.

Brat Farrar, Josephine Tey - one of the scariest psychological thrillers I've ever read, and something that drives a lot of my thinking about plot twists and revelations.

Black Heart Blue/Lies Like Love, Louisa Reid - dark contemporary YA about abusive families and how people do and don't escape them.

We Were Liars, E Lockhart - YA mystery with a lot of terrific writing.
The Lovely Bones, Alice Sebold - a crime novel centred on the result rather than commission of violent crime. Also a brilliant film directed by Peter Jackson.

Alias Grace, Margaret Atwood - historical crime about the difficulty of determining truth, lies and fiction.

The Go-Between, LP Hartley - a classic that doesn't have a lot of surface level similarities but is a fantastic book about the effects of trauma.

Animal Dreams, Barbara Kingsolver - again, not at all similar on the surface, but a book with some of the most fantastic prose I've ever read about trauma and the lies we tell ourselves and others.

The Sin-Eater's Daughter - a dark fantasy about the importance of story, belief, fairytale and making choices in difficult situations.

If You Find Me, Emily Murdoch - an American take on some of the themes in TBD.(less)

Many of her couples acknowledge each other's flaws and love each other as much for them as despite them. The Reluctant Widow and Unknown Ajax come to mind for Heyer, also The Grand Sophy and The Talisman Ring. For Dianna Wynne Jones, Deep Secret, Howl's Moving Castle, Charmed Life... I also Jane Austen's Persuasion: Anne and Captain Wentworth are such a grown up couple and come to each other with such maturity in themselves and what they hope to get out of their relationship. I'm currently reading Sara Barnard's A Quiet Kind of Thunder and loving the developing relationship between Steffi and Rhys... (less)

“Where books had been a comfort before, they became a necessity, old books best of all: thick heavy tomes with stories that spread and twisted through other worlds, where he could walk like a ghost in the footsteps of other lives.”
Alexia Casale, House of Windows

“We’re not fools for wanting love, only for lying to ourselves about whether we’ve found it”
Alexia Casale, The Best Way to Bury Your Husband

“...there was something in the texture of the weave that felt happy: the
echo of a memory so far down in his soul it was all emotion, a
burst of colour and warmth, adrift from time and place.”
Alexia Casale, House of Windows

“You’re not listening. Like so many people, you think that the important moments in the story of a life are big and loud, where really they’re small and quiet. Someone on the outside would think these moments unworthy of note, but you must recognise the important moments of your own life when they happen. It is very important.”
Alexia Casale, House of Windows

“Dreams are the fire that warms the soul. Let them guide you.”
Alexia Casale, The Bone Dragon

“There is beauty and wild magic in the night.”
Alexia Casale, The Bone Dragon

“When you hunt wisely, there is no need to run afterwards.”
Alexia Casale, The Bone Dragon

“People get it wrong when they talk about innocence: they think it’s something to do with ignorance about the facts of sex and all the nasty things that happen in the world. But facts don’t change people: it’s understanding how the facts feel that does.”
Alexia Casale, The Bone Dragon
