David Wilson was born in Manchester in 1964, the youngest of three children, and lived in Manchester with his parents – now both retired head teachers – until the age of nineteen.

In the early 1980s, he moved to London and joined the Metropolitan Police, working in the inner-city areas of south-east London as a detective until 1990, when he transferred back to the Greater Manchester Police. Once again, he worked in the inner city, covering the Salford and Moss Side areas of Manchester.
