Norwegian writers are great

Let`s talk about Norwegian writers...

Why?
Because I like the sound of my own voice/ writings, and because there are several good Norwegian writers

First, we start with the chief

Knut Hamsun

Knut

This guy is probably the best known, and greatest norwegian writer of all time

His breakthrough came in 1890 and was called Hunger

Although he had published several works, prior to Hunger, this was Hamsun`s entrance into greatness

Hunger was not only a great book, but it represented something new. Both in Norwegian literature, but also to storytelling in general.

Compared to earlier Norwegian writers, this book introduced an analysis of the mind, the psychology of the characters. Hamsun described, like Dostoevsky, not only the lives of seemingly ordinary people, but the anguish, the struggle involved in living, loving, surviving and dying in a unforgiving universe.

hamsun

In 1917 Hamsun published Growth of the Soil a book that describes the hardship of living of the land. A book, in which, Hamsun utilizes beautiful descriptions of nature, to add to the beauty of his stories.

Three years later, Hamsun recieved the Nobel Prize of Literature.

Should also note, that Hamsun influenced writers like Ernest Hemingway, Isaac Bashevis Singer andCharles Bukowski

description

John Fante`s book Ask the Dust is named
after a quote from Hamsun`s Pan

“The other one he loved like a slave, like a madman and like a beggar. Why? Ask the dust on the road and the falling leaves, ask the mysterious God of life; for no one knows such things. She gave him nothing, no nothing did she give him and yet he thanked her. She said: Give me your peace and your reason! And he was only sorry she did not ask for his life.”

Knut

Hamsun published more than 20 novels in his lifetime, and is to this day one of the greates writers of all time

On 23 June 1948 Hamsun was sentenced to pay a fine of 325,000 kroner, for his support to the Germans during world war 2. This marked the end of his career, and he died on 19. February 1952. His last book, On Overgrown Paths, ended like this:

"Today the supreme court upheld the sentence and I stop writing"

Tarjei Vesaas

Tarjei

This is my favourite of all the Norwegian writers

Published his first book, Menneskebonn, in 1923. He was then 26 years old.

Vesaas is regarded as one of the most important Norwegian writers after the second world war. And he is great.

Quick note; Norway has two official written languages. Bokmål, which is derived from Danish. And Nynorsk, which is based on oral dialects. Vesaas wrote in Nynorsk. Seeing how only 10-15 % of the population writes in Nynorsk, his original writings can be hard to understand. Especially certain words are written differently.

The good thing about this is how Vesaas utilizes language to enrich his stories. He is also know for using descriptions of nature as reflection of the human mind.

Vesaas is best know for his novels, but was also a great poet.

description

In his book, The Ice Palace, he included this poem:

"As we stand the snow falls thicker.
Your sleeve turns white
My sleeve turns white.
They move between us like
snow-covered bridges

But snow-covered bridges are frozen.
In here is living warmth
Your arm is warm beneath the snow, and
a welcome weight on mine

It snows and snows
upon silent bridges.
Bridges unknown to all"

For this book, he was awarded The Nordic Council's Literature Prize in 1963. He was the first Norwegian Writer to get this award.

And, it`s a beautiful book. And that says a lot, when it`s written by a man.
I don`t say that about a lot of things

t.v

The first book, I read, by Vesaas, was
The House in the Dark

It was written after the second world war, and describes the lives of a oppressed people, living in hard times.

It`s through reading this book, that you realize the greatness that was Vesaas. Although it`s primarily a description, of very specific people, in a time, and place he had once known, it`s also so much more.

It transforms. It grows. It becomes the story for all oppressed people, from all countries, all times, of all the ideologies, all the violence, of all the evil.

description

Vesaas was a master; one of the few.

He died on the 15. of March in 1970, 72 years old.

Jens Bjørneboe

jens

A poet, writer, painter, teacher, an alcoholic, and a social critic

Bjørneboe was a great man
in a bad world

jens

He wrote this poem, called "Ten commandments for a young man who wants to get ahead"

"The first commandment's easy, quite:
The majority is always right.

Always think what folk will say.
Side with the strongest, day by day.

When in doubt, just shut your trap
Until you see for whom they clap.

Think what opinions you should hold.
Alone, you'll be out in the cold.

Don't give your lofty instincts rein,
But stick to what will bring you gain.

Tell people what they want to hear;
Move quietly through every sphere.
(For truth brings sorrow on your head,
While daily lies earn daily bread.)

Never walk upright. Sidle forth
And warm yourself at every hearth.

Praise everybody to the skies;
A flock of friends will be your prize.
(This in-group paradise will be
Your best insurance policy.)"

bjørneboe

It`s hard so say anything about his writings, because there is so much of it
and because it so diverse..

But I will talk about two of his books.

The first, and his magnus opus, is The Moment Of Freedom Trilogy: " Moment Of Freedom " , " Powderhouse " And " The Silence "

Also known as "Story of bestiality"

This is one of the greatest books published in Norway, after the second world war. It`s beautiful, tragic, and sad.. So sad..

Here, Bjørneboe, writes about the human condition; madness, war, violence, oppression.. About witch hunts, inquisitions, the colonization of the America continent, of anger, regret, of killing, and of love.. The love for all mankind, and of nature... Of science.. And art.

And of freedom...

jensb

The second book, is Jonas and tells the tragic story of a young boy, innocent, defenceless... Being hurled into a dark world, filled with evil. A must read for any who had a bad childhood.

jonas

This book got a lot of attention when it was published, since it told a story of oppression and authoritarian transgression on school kids.

Bjørneboe also wrote a play, about Semmelweis. A hungarian doctor who opposed his superiors, trying to save lives... This man must have made an impression on Bjørneboe.

When it comes to his writings, one can see that Bjørneboe was affected by the writings of Louis-Ferdinand Céline, and Michel Foucault...

After having struggled with depression and alcoholism for a long time, he committed suicide by hanging on May 9, 1976.

Helge Ingstad

My Hero

description

The Bear

A man of nature

Of science

Of humble words

Of contemplations

And of love

description

Helge Ingstad was working as a lawyer, in Levanger, when he decided to leave Norway, and spend time hunting, and gathering fur in the Canadian wilderness.

After this he wrote his first book, in 1931, called Pelsjegerliv blant Nord-Canadas indianere

This translates to "Life of a fur hunter among the indians in North Canada"

And it`s one of the best non-fiction books ever written. Ever.

description

Ingstad descriptions, his adventures, his life is an amazing story. And he lived to tell the tale.

He wrote twelve books, and travelled all over the world. He was a great man. And a great writer

description

There is a mountain named after him, a river, and asteroid.

description

He died on the 29. of March 2001.

The End

Just one more thing

I want to add something about the Nobel Prize in Literature, in regards to Norwegian writers

There are three writers who have gotten it, so far...

Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson in 1903, Knut Hamsun in 1920 og Sigrid Undset in 1928.

So, why didn`t I include all of them on my list?

Simply because I haven`t read their writings... Except for a short story by Bjørnstjerne, called "The Father".. And it was really good.

Still, three writers who have recieved this prize isn`t that many. Which proves a point a made in a previous blog, that there aren`t that many good Norwegian writers.. But there are some.

I recommend checking out these books:

Victoria

Mysteries

The Ice Palace

The Birds

Moment of Freedom: The Heiligenberg Manuscript

Sun-Corner

At home there's a sun-corner
where spring quietly stirs.
Dripping all day long.

Clear drops from the snow-rim,
they reflect both good and bad
in their brief fall, and are shattered.
The sun is a hot cataract.

In that sun-corner,
where you were born -
it's those drops that should
mirror you, and wet your lips,
pure from the snow-rim and
right into your heart.

It's in that faint smell of
spring moisture you should fall asleep.
That call you should heed.
There, everything would feel right.

It's all moving downhill.
Everything's oozing toward a distant
goal,
on its way to the sea.
An unknown sea inside a dream.
All of spring's sorrow is heading there.
All thoughts spiral there
and then disappear.

Your childhood sun-corner is where
you are when the call sounds.

Ralph

Finally finished my second story, Ralph; It was hard work, but I`m really happy with it. Now I can enjoy the rest of my holiday. Which is strange, since I`m not very religious – read antireligious. I should probably write something about that sometimes.

Anyways – looking forward to getting my hands on the first copy of Ralph. Now it`s time for celebrating. Enjoy!

For Ralph

great

Dark Times

It`s dark times - but that is because I live in the artic. The sun hasn`t been up for a long time.

And that makes a great difference

Still, I`m working harder than ever
Just finnished my second exam, one more - and then a short break. Planning to get a whole lot of writing done.

Yeah, and I also changed my story again. Can`t seem to decide. But I think that it will turn out okay. I`m writing about a time and place, which I don`t know anything about - but with a good imagination..

And I`m broke. Not poor, just broke. The typical spoiled student spending all his money on drinking. And books. Have ordered a Bukowski book and Lolita! Can`t wait! ^^)

Change of plans..

So, should I be spending my time reading for my exams? Definitly!

Have I been spending my time writing?
Yes

Why?
Because writing is way to much fun

And I already finished one exam - and only have two to go
So, I should be okay

So yeah - started writing on a new story. Actually I started on it a long time ago, but picked it back up again. And changed it. Completely.

But I do actually think it`s going to be a good story. It`s quite absurd, funny - and yeah.. We will see..

What else is there? Yeah, there is no sun around - seeing how it`s wintertime here.. No happiness! ^^) And there is very little snow. Very cold. Great setting for writing strange stories.

Looking forward to taking a break from all the reading this weekend, going on a trip.. Which is going to freak me out, after writing Violet! Goddamit!

But for now - it`s all about the writing.

Yeah, and I finished reading Virgina Woolf`s "To the Lighthouse"
Great book. But strange writing. Not my kind of storytelling, but facinating atleast.

Exams

Exams, exams, exams… Weird, all this time I should be reading for my exams, but I haven`t been able to put down “Revolutionary Road”

It`s amazing. Richard Yates is king.
I finished it yesterday, and it`s great. The story is not my favorite, but I love the characters, the setting, and the smoking… Yates is a storytelling genius.
So, I also picked up “To the lighthouse again”

Have started on it twice, ending in me putting it away both times. But then I had other books to read. From now, I`m just going to read that one, and I think that I have broken the code – it`s all about pace. I`m used to racing through the pages… this book though, you really got to take it easy. Can`t wait.

Ending a story..

Finished another short-story today
a good day

I have a strange way of writing stories,
this story started out as something completely different - and turned into a scary horror story.

It`s about a girl called Violet

violet

And it`s actually scary.

Strange seeing how I actually managed to freak myself out, with my own writing. I guess I`m not that bad of a writer as I thought. strange

But writing this story, did confirm something... You can`t force a story, the story has to be explored, not created in advance.

Although I had big plans for both "Ralph" and "Violet", they both ended up way shorter than I thought... The story ends, when it has to end - I guess.

scary

So, I`m really happy about it - although it didn`t worked out the way I wanted it to.

I also got some new books - tried to read Virgina Woolfs - To the Lighthouse, but it was boring - so i started reading Hemingway insted. I love it. Looking forward to reading more.

I love writing

Now, I should off course focus on my exam, but... At least I will take a break from writing stories for a while. I need to rewrite "Ralph" first.

Looking forward to that too..

Writing

Have written a lot today
which feels good

description

I also finished my last book - The Road to Wigan Pier, by Georg Orwell... So now, I`m waiting for more books to arrive in the mail.

Since my bookshelf doesn`t contain one book written by a female writer, I have decided to do something about that. Bought Virginia Wolf`s To the lighthouse.

Although I`m not convinced that I`m going to like it - I have to give it a shot.

After that I`m reading Revolutionary Road - by Richard Yates. Another writer I don`t know anything about. Loved the reference to him on Californication, so I had to check it out.

And then there is a lot of exams coming up - so it will probably a lot of reading ahead, and not so much writing.

Yeah, I have started to write a horror story. Turned out I actually managed to freak myself out, with my own writing. I take that as a good sign.

DFTBA!

Anxiety

It`s a strange feeling

I get it every time I finish a story.
I`m left feeling so emotionally drained
fearing that I won`t be able to write anything else

scream

I feel so useless
I know it will pass, but I still end up worrying

It keeps coming back. It`s easy to fall into that trap, fear, distress, worries.

I know I have a great life. But still... It`s a worry beyond all those petty problems.. Those you can manage to get through. Those who hold you back.

What do I do?

I seek. I wander. Through art.

One of my favorite pictures, and that I keep coming back too in such times, is this one.

description

There is something about it. It scares me. And it inspires me
Like so much other works of human ingenuity, creativity, struggle and victories - it makes me realize, that you got to keep fighting. keep writing

And it always turns out the right way

description

I find myself back, behind my desk, bashing out words like they never left me

It`s the best feeling in the world.

Writing... when you get so connected you`re scared by your own words, feel sorry for the characters you have created... you fall in love with them

I lose connection to the outside world - shut myself in for hours and hours... And the joy of finishing it - to hold it in your hands.

Creativity is happiness
and although there are times when it feels like shit, when you`re stuck, your characters don`t feel right, the words don`t come out the way they should

I always find myself coming back to that state where creativity flows, and then I am happy
Like I did today

Now it`s back to babysit my classmates, who are celebrating. While I am sober and responsible. Maybe I will try to continue writing afterwards

I hate being sober in those situation. And I feel sad. That we human beings cannot be together without having to get drunk, high or doing mean things to each other...

My First

Yesterday was a good day

I started reading clockwork orange, which is a great book. Then I got drunk - being a student and all. A great day

description

And today was even better

Firstly, it`s Carl Sagan`s birthday.

And when i checked the mailbox today - I found to copies of "House of Jones"

my book

Have been waiting for it for a long time. Quite a waste of money, seeing how it is a really short book - but I had to. It turned out great.

Really happy with the result: House of Jones

Now, I have some more writing to do
