13 Books I'd Like to Read in 2013

I'm a fan of family sagas. Of literary novels too--which family sagas tend to be. Experimental fiction also has a very special place in my heart, and I definitely love multicultural fiction.
Put all of these together and my brain almost explodes in rapture.

Not surprisingly, each item on my 2013 reading list has one or more of these elements, and they are as follows:

* Cane River- Lalita Tademy
* The Famished Road- Ben Okri
* The Cider House Rules- John Irving
* The Satanic Verses- Salman Rushdie
* Child of God- Lolita Files
* The Name of the Rose- Umberto Eco
* The God of Small Things- Arundhati Roy
* The Tin Drum- Gunter Grass
* Hopscotch- Julio Cortazar
* House of Leaves- Mark Z. Danielewski
* The Grapes of Wrath- John Steinbeck
* The Brothers Karamazov- Fyodor Dostoyevsky
* The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao- Junot Diaz

(Clearly I also favor books whose titles begin with 'The.')

I hope I get to most (if not all) of these books next year--most have been on my 'to read' list for quite a while now.

Cane River by Lalita Tademy The Famished Road by Ben Okri The Cider House Rules by John Irving The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie Child of God by Lolita Files The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy The Tin Drum by Günter Grass Hopscotch by Julio Cortázar House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz

ABNA 2013 & 99c Promo (+ recent reviews)

Emancipating Alice ended up being a 2013 Amazon Breakthrough Award Quarterfinalist, and to celebrate, it will be offered for 99c one week only: 4/18-4/25 on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other platforms. Amazon Link

From Publisher's Weekly:

"...calls to mind the wild satires of Fay Weldon...recalls the work of Alix Kates Shulman."

Excerpts of reviews from Amazon Vine reviewers:

"This is written with very good imagery and descriptiveness. I love the writing style, the author gets your attention right from the beginning."

"A very well written piece of work...A very good story indeed."

"This story has an interesting premise, that of a woman whose husband dies, and who doesn't seem that upset about it. There is the mystery of why she feels that way and the second chapter begins to tell that story. I liked the writing and the way the author talks about what Alice is thinking, even some of the mundane things."

"Compelling, sparse prose."

From R. Boehm:
"Well written. Kept me reading, kept me wanting to find out exactly what, if anything, Alice had to do with her husband's death. I liked how the story evolved. How the author takes you back to the beginning and creates the basis for the question in your mind about Alice's involvement in her husband's death."

Thanks to all who have reviewed my novel!

And to new readers, I hope you enjoy it. :)
Feel free to come back here and review (please also post on Amazon)! ;)

Just released a short story (3/17/14) called "One on the Line," and it will be downloadable for free on Amazon 3/19-3/20.

I will do another free run of the short story once the second edition of my novel Emancipating Alice is available, currently scheduled for late April.

About "One on the Line:"

A literary short story exploring the complications of dating and relationships.

In this tale, Sally is planning to break up with her boyfriend after going on one more outing with him--a fishing trip. But perhaps fate has other plans.

NB - This short story will be included in an upcoming short story collection.

Emancipating Alice: Second Edition is finally here!

Goodness! I have been promising this for over a year. The second edition was also meant to be the anniversary edition (to be published November 2013), but I just never got around to the edits, finding myself busy with tons of other projects.

Anyway, if you've read/downloaded the first edition, look out for that email from Amazon about an update, which I'm hoping they'll send (if you got it from elsewhere, the new edition won't be published until October since I've made the e-book exclusive to Amazon for a few months). Or contact me; I'll send it to you.

Emancipating Alice is so much cleaner now after having gone through several additional editors since its first publication.

It feels great to finally be done with it; I can't imagine going back to it again, when there are so many new ideas and projects on the horizon!

I feel like this post should be titled: 'Emancipating Ada' because I love this book, but I feel so free, now; I did my duty. This must be what it feels like when parents send their kids off to college.

Go forth into the world, my love! I have truly done my best with you, now.

Goodreads Giveaway

Final giveaway for a paperback copy of Emancipating Alice ends November 12th!
Emancipating Alice by Ada Winder

Perhaps another will be run once a new book is complete--hopefully sometime in 2015.

Emancipating Alice was written in one month, but for the next 7 1/2 years, kept going through revision and editing.

I'm done with it now, but I have no idea if this is likely to happen with the next book.

Will it take longer to write, but much less time to edit to satisfaction? Will I write it rather quickly, and be satisfied with it even faster?

I don't yet have a starting point for the next book, but I am finishing up work on a short story collection, due out in the next few months or so, and I will publish the longest story in it as a standalone. Beyond that, I'm not quite sure which direction I will go: darker or lighter? Stick with literary women's fiction or move to psychological suspense? Head toward heartwarming fiction? Perhaps start a series?
I'll see where the wind blows! :)
