About my reviews/activity on Goodreads: I only rate and review books I *like.* If I'm not into it, I simply don't rate it/review it. So you'll only see four or five stars ratings from me, and maybe a few notes about who I think might best enjoy the book in question.

Thanks for reaching out, Tanya!

By topic, do you mean historical mysteries in general, or specifically my new book, Eagle & Crane?

Two answers: I've always loved history, and I find setting something in the past gives you a good lens to still say something about the present, but in a more subtle way (given the divided state of politics these days, you can't blame me!). And then, mystery... well, I like a good puzzle. And when I read books I always want something to really "happen." So, historical mysteries it is for me! Lots of things happen in Eagle & Crane, but it starts out with a plane crash that *might* be murder. Again... I like puzzles!

I specifically wrote Eagle & Crane because I had a lot of local and family material to draw on. It's a story about a flying circus that gets interrupted when the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor, WWII breaks out, and one of the headliners, Harry Yamada, is forced to go to an internment camp. I grew up in a part of CA that used to be home to a lot of Japanese-Americans... until their (pretty shocking, IMO) internment during WWII. It was easy to research the history of the place, and at the same time, this local history moved me with its sadness, fear, and racism. America clearly had a long way to go in fulfilling its dreams of equality and freedom for all (and... given recent politics, looks like we still do). The other aspects of the book -- airplanes, a flying circus was easy to research as multiple members of my family are pilots, and my grandfather used to tell me stories about flying circuses and wing-walkers, etc. So the story all came together somewhat organically.

And what I'm working on next... well, another historical mystery, of course!

Thanks again for writing, and happy reading in the meantime!!!
