Me & The Econo...me
Prices are skyrocketing everywhere! Except for one place: my ebook sales pages.
Yes, really
Fun fact: My ebook prices have remained the same since 2012. (No, not a typo. I don't make those and if I do, it's obviously your fault for distracting me while I'm trying to concentrate!)
How is that possible you ask? Didn't you raise them back in 20 whatever whatever?
Yes and no.
While I did raise all of my ebook prices by $1 a book many years ago, for individual titles, (when I started paying for advertising - halving my promotional costs with the reader) if you buy any of my complete series ebooks, you still get my ebooks at their original per ebook price!
The shorter ebooks (everything except for the Rebellion & Sedition series) come out to $2.99 each in Complete Series ebook form. Rebellion comes out to $4.99 an ebook in the complete series ebook form (available on Kobo, Barnes & Noble and Apple) and Sedition will as well (at least I intend for it to, baring some crazy unforeseen circumstances... and assuming I actually write Sedition 3 before 2030 ; P). It's my way of saying thank you for taking the time to see each title through to the end.
My ebooks being very affordable, while still earning me some level of reward for all of the hours, heart, soul and time I pour into them, has always been very important to me. Especially now, with the econo-me and you going particularly wackadoodle and the current gover-men-and-women-t shitdown, it's especially important to me.
I hope you will enjoy reading my latest illegitimate brain child, Sedition II: Kenji , as much as I enjoyed writing it.
Cheers!

Guess Who's Back?
Yes, I'm terrible, I know.
I drop a book and then disappear indefinitely. (laugh) Not the best strategy I know.
However, on the bright side, the stars have finally realigned. I'm about to start back writing again soon and should put something out in the coming months.
Cheers!

Amazon Ebook Return Controversy Catches Fire
Sadly, this isn't breaking news about a fab collab between Amazon, Prince and The Hunger Games. Still, that doesn't mean you can't have a little mood music in the background while you read this post:
Prince - Controversy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gazN...
For those of you who don't know, there is apparently now a TikTok trend showing people how easy it is to read ebooks in full on Amazon and then return them for a full refund... just because you can - a policy no other ebook retailer or most brick and mortar bookstores for that matter, have. It's not even a policy Amazon has for its other digital products, just ebooks.
NPR Authors are protesting Amazon's e-book policy that allows users to read and return:

Books + Publishing Australia & New Zealand: SoA calls on Amazon to cut ebook refund window

CBC Canada: E-book return hack comes with a steep price, author says
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmont...
Times UK: Writers riled by Amazon offering refunds — after readers finish ebooks
https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/wr...
EuroNews: Is Amazon's ebook return policy ruining authors' careers?
https://www.euronews.com/culture/2022...
And many more: https://www.google.com/search?q=amazo...
THE PETITION: Change Amazon Return Policies for Completed E-books: Protect Authors from Theft! is at 70,000+ signatures and counting:
https://www.change.org/p/change-amazo...
There is now even a megathread on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/writing/comm...
Non-Amazon exclusive indie authors, depending on book price, will typically, after marketing and other expenses, walk away with a solid 35 cents to $3 profit per book sold. Amazon exclusive indie authors are about $0.70 - $3. Trade authors are about in the same ranges. Still, some authors, hoping to acquire new readers or profit off of their older titles or additional books in the same/similar series, make $0 on some sales after it's all said and done.
Are there exceptions? Of course, but that's the general consensus.
What happens to the rest of the ebook/print book price you pay? It goes to Amazon, their publisher (in the case of trad authors), Amazon advertising and other marking firms/methods.
Sadly, some authors are claiming returns as high as in the triple digits each month (on author boards) in the course of the past couple of months.
There is, however, a win-win....win solution.
Many authors, such as myself, have their works available at local libraries. If they don't, as long as they are available via Overdrive and other such library platforms, you can typically request that your library acquire them.
And yes, ANYONE can specifically request any materials (ebooks, movies, etc.) they wish to borrow from their local library if their library system doesn't already carry them (though for the most part, you have to be a library card holder). Responsiveness to requests vary from one library to another and depend on a variety of factors such as number of requests for that material that have been made, budget and other guidelines.
Unsure if your current or potentially future favorite is available?
Most libraries now have online catalogs including ebook catalogs. You simply do a search and if you can't find it, use your library's request form (or in some cases, you simply click request under the material if the ebook catalog pulls it up).
Borrowing books through your library is a win win...win for everyone. The author gets paid, you get to read the work free to you (if you don't count tax dollars) and you support your local library (much of whose funding is tied to their circulation or the number of users and materials being borrowed).
Especially considering the average author profit per book sold as it is, why risk losing your Amazon account and driving authors out of business when you can get the same end result and help out both your local library and your favorite author at the same time?
Enjoy!

Kindle Unlimited

'Allo Guvnors!
I'm doing a little unscientific research...on you of course.
For a limited time (approximately 90 days (wink)), Miael: Family will be in Kindle Unlimited!

Why?
Why the hell not?!
Part of the fun of being an abject failure is the absolute, positive right and obligation to not give a flying fu..dge, to do whatever the hell I feel like doing at any giving moment in time.
Right now, it's putting a book in KU and verbally regurgitating about it on Goodreads (while having WAY too much fun playing with the image HTML function).
ASIN = B01IQN222Q

Enjoy!

August Farrow
Out of all of the personas at SeaMonkey Ink, I, Grea Alexander, am by far the most well-known and the most active on Goodreads...or online at all. So, when my peeps make a stride, I like to shout it out to the world.
August Farrow has finally figured out how to work with the new Amazon system and has finally gotten her 2020 and 2021 books up!
She has also created a quick index of her titles here: https://www.augustfarrow.seamonkeyink...
All of her books are on Kindle Unlimited so if you have KU, enjoy to your heart's content!
Fun fact: August often puts her favorite, most unique and/or rarest sighted wildlife photos as the end of each book. She considers it a reward/added treat for those that finish the book (though she sprinkles interesting little morsels throughout).
In 2020 & 2021 she has everything from birds, spiders, insects and snakes to bears, coyote and bobcat...almost all hidden at the end and no not just paw prints or scat either. She also has such things in prior books.
For 2020 she has wildlife photos from:
- Colorado
- Nebraska
- South Dakota
- Wyoming
- Texas
* Anahuac & Surrounding
* Baytown & Surrounding
* Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge
* Brazos Bend State Park
* Galveston & Surrounding
* Hermann Park - Houston
* High Island
* Houston (General)
* Humble
* Memorial Park - Houston
* San Antonio & Surrounding
* San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge - Brazoria
* Sheldon Lake State Park - Houston
* Peckinpaugh Preserve - Spring
* Kleb Woods - Tomball
Her 2021 books including photos from:
- Alaska
- California
- Hawaii (Big Island)
- Idaho
- Wyoming
- US General
- Texas
* Amarillo & Surrounding
* Anahuac & Surrounding
* Austin & Surrounding
* Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge
* Baytown & Surrounding
* Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge
* Brazos Bend State Park
* Galveston & Surrounding
* Hermann Park - Houston
* High Island
* Houston (General)
* Humble
* Memorial Park - Houston
* Russ Pitman Park - Bellaire
* San Antonio & Surrounding
* San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge - Brazoria
* Sheldon Lake State Park - Houston
* Peckinpaugh Preserve - Spring
* Kleb Woods - Tomball
* WD Jones National Forest - Conroe
She's also been able to venture to a few new states/wildlife preserves in 2022 and hopes to visit more - if funds and the state of things allow.
So far this year, she's visited locations in:
- Texas (of course)
- Louisiana
- Alabama
- Georgia
- Tennessee
- North Carolina
- South Carolina
- Mississippi
She'd love to venture out of the country again; however, with things being as they are with the rapid changes from one day to the next due to "the Covit" (yes, that's what I like to call it), she's putting that on hold...for now.
Enjoy!

I'm #1!...Again!
I can't get a Bookbub to save my life and am likewise snubbed from sales promotional groups by Barnes and Noble, Kobo and My book Cave.
However, as of right now, Amarna: The Complete Series is the #1 Best Seller in Amazon Australia IN TWO CATEGORIES! (And at full price, no promotional newsletters. (laugh))
To quote Nelson from the Simpsons: Ah-ha!
Of course, though it will likely not last long, it's still quite amusing. Screenshots are here:
https://greaalexander.seamonkeyink.co...
See it live, before it disappears:
https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/...
Thank you and lots of love to my readers, especially those in Australia who got me to #1.
Hmmm...I guess maybe I should change my descriptions to read #1 Bestselling Author. Or not. (laugh)
Cheers!

Ok, so last post we mentioned that August Farrow does the graphics for SeaMonkey Ink. To refresh your memory:
"Also, a quick thank you to August Farrow, the multi-talented visual art...essa and photographer of all trades for the lovely banner work included in the article (as well as on my Amazon detail pages and my Author updates)."
In honor of her hard work, I'd like to take the opportunity to share a few more of the banners she has created for my titles. You can view them all by clicking into my product detail pages or scrolling through my "Author Updates": https://www.amazon.com/Grea-Alexander...

For those of you wondering: Yes, she does have more wildlife photobooks from her travels for 2020 and 2021; however, as Amazon has switched over from .mobi to .epub, that's a whole new learning curve for her.
She's aiming to find a work around by Spring 2022 at the latest.
Her other works are still available and in Kindle Unlimited for anyone interested in checking them out.
Cheers!

Sedition I: Xian - Sneak Peak
'Allo Guvnors!
I'm feeling kind of frisky tonight, so I thought I'd post a sample chapter.
While I could give a little background on Kenji and Xian, in the end, after giving it much thought, I decided: nah!
If you'd like to know more about my protagonists, you should read the Rebellion Books (particularly 2 and 3) or go out and preorder Sedition I: Xian while it's still 1/2 priced (or later when it's full price if you really, really love me (laugh)).
Me being me, all of my books have a bit of my sometimes dark and twisted yet fun and playful sense of humor. Sedition is no exception.
Enjoy!
P.S. Due to formatting limitations within this blog, this chapter is posted using basic, block style paragraphs as opposed to normal, narrative style indented paragraphs. The book, however, uses the traditional narrative style indented paragraph format.
------------
Sedition I: Xian by Grea Alexander
Sample Chapter
Lady Xian hid in her favorite, secluded courtyard - her eyes glued to the remnants of her lunch, remnants that now lay scattered across the snow, near the little creek.
Crouched down in the gazebo, she waited patiently for her tiny guest to make yet another of his more and more frequent appearances – a hastily made wooden trap in the ready.
Coming across his charge, Kenji watched for a long moment, his head tilted.
“You can come out now, little friend,” Xian whispered softly. “I won’t hurt you. I promise.”
“Little friend?” Kenji asked from just behind her.
Xian cried out in alarm, startled.
How in the hell did he always manage to appear as if out of thin air? she wondered, agitated.
Grabbing his hand and yanking him down into a crouching position, Xian began to whisper. “Little friend is a baby weasel of sorts,” she supplied.
“A weasel?” he repeated.
Xian nodded. “Remember last week, when one of Su-Gyeong’s cats dug out that poor weasel’s den?”
He nodded.
“Well, one of the kits survived. If I can catch him, I can tend to his wounds.”
“Why?” Kenji whispered.
“So he won’t die,” she replied sarcastically.
“It’s a weasel,” he said. “Maybe it’s his fate to die.”
“Maybe it’s his fate that I come along, see his plight and save him,” she countered.
“Then you might want to try again tomorrow, Tomoe Gozen,” he replied.
“Why?” she asked.
“Because your prey just ran off – with a nice-sized piece of your fish I might add.”
“What?” Xian breathed, agitated.
“He’s already made off with the loot,” he repeated. “Just now. While you were busy talking to me.”
Xian groaned in agitation – standing as she dropped the trap’s rope.
“Even then,” Kenji continued, also rising. “You’ll likely never catch him with that thing.” He gestured to her trap.
“And I suppose you can do better?” she retorted, her arms folding across her chest.
“My 6-year-old cousin could do better,” he replied, as straight faced as always.
“Alright,” she replied. “Why don’t you put your money where your mouth is?”
“Because it’s a waste of time and energy,” Kenji replied.
Lady Xian smirked. “As if you have anything better to do,” she taunted.
Xian wasn’t exactly wrong on that point, he reluctantly admitted to himself.
“Whoever catches Little Friend can decide his fate,” she continued. “If you catch him, you can leave him to the elements and I won’t interfere. However, if I catch him, you have to help me save him.”
“Agreed,” he replied - though he knew well Choi Xian would likely try to save the animal either way.
“He’ll likely stay in his den until tomorrow,” she said, turning to leave the courtyard. “I’ll see you then.”
“Until then,” he agreed with a slight bow.
Certain Lady Xian was gone, Kenji gave a lyrical whistle.
But moments later, the little white weasel came bounding out of his hastily improvised den, a half-eaten piece of fish still clutched in its jaws. Dropping his prize to the ground, the small ermine hurriedly wolfed down Xian’s fish before bounding over to Kenji and stopping at his boots.
Picking up the small weasel, Kenji held it so they were eye to eye.
“I thought I told you not to leave my room,” Kenji chided the wayward animal.
Unrepentant, the weasel licked his finger in reply.
Carefully tucking the small stoat in the inner pocket of his shirt, Kenji picked up Xian’s trap and headed back to his rooms.

Speculative Fiction Showcase
Happy 2022!
As 2021 wound up, I did an interview with Speculative Fiction Showcase - the 1st one I've done in quite a while. For those of you who don't know, Speculative Fiction Showcase is a blog dedicated to....showcasing speculative fiction. (wink).
What is Speculative Fiction? According to their masthead and William D. Richards: "Speculative Fiction—an all-encompassing genre created to describe stories of science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, and other stories that have an element of “What if...” in them. A story in speculative fiction is one that adds an element of the unreal, or asks, what would become of our society if history took a different direction at some important event? Fiction with a little something extra thrown in."
In short, this encompasses everything I've published to date with the exception of the Rebellion Books and the soon to be published Sedition:
.
You can read my interview here: https://indiespecfic.blogspot.com/202...
---------
Also, a quick thank you to August Farrow, the multi-talented visual art...essa and photographer of all trades for the lovely banner work included in the article (as well as on my Amazon detail pages and my Author updates).
Cheers!
