I am a Professor of English who teaches subjects ranging from medieval literature and Shakespeare through children's literature and popular culture. As a writer, I do critical non-fiction, primarily of literature but also occasionally of film, music, and comics. In addition to the many articles I have published, I am the author of the only book (to date) on the eminent Canadian SF writer Phyllis Gotlieb, and the coeditor of several collections of interviews with major cartoonists, a collection of essays on Canadian comics, a collection of essays on Twin Peaks, and two essay collections on the TV show Supernatural. My reading interests, like my research interests, are wide; visit my page to see the sorts of things I like to read. ...more

The flip one is, if you just can't write that first paragraph, write the second one and worry about the first one later. More seriously (though that is not entirely a joke), one thing to do is to take a break: do something else for a while, and come back fresh. But the other thing to do, ultimately, is just to write. No matter how crappy it seems, just grind out the words. You can always throw (some of) them away later, but you need to start if you're ever going to finish.(less)
Dominick Grace The best thing about being a writer is having written something--when the work is done and you can look back on it.

I'm not sure what to make of this. From what I can find, it's original work using characters from her newspaper strip, but I am pretty sure at least some of it got folded in to Literary Life. I've also seen it called Britain's first graphic novel, bu ...more

Hi, Joanna, I do indeed like SF--love it, in fact. Some of my favourite books are SF, and I've taught SF/Fantasy courses. I have read several of Scalzi's books, including the Old Man's war ones. Outside of that series, have you read Red Shirts? I particularly liked that one. The Android's Dream was also a blast.

Joanna Hi Dom. I think you like sci-fi and due to your dry humour, I think you might like John Scalzi's novels. He writes with tongue-in-cheek humour. I especially like his Old Man's War series.
