Steve R. Hartwig discovered his love of writing later in life, finding that some of life's greatest adventures begin with a willingness to keep learning, exploring, and sharing stories.

After making Nicaragua his home for more than a decade, Steve found inspiration in the country's people, landscapes, and rich traditions. The mountain communities of Miraflor became the setting for his Mateo series, where biblical history comes alive through the eyes of a curious twelve-year-old boy.

His stories blend adventure, authentic cultural settings, and enduring Christian themes, inviting readers to rediscover Scripture in a fresh and engaging way while celebrating faith, family, friendship, and hope.

I spent twelve years living in Panama, where I ran a small tropical bed and breakfast and cooked for guests from all over the world. During that time, I fell in love with the food, culture, and warmth of Latin America.

After returning to the United States for a few years, I realized how deeply that experience had shaped me. I eventually moved back to Central America and have now lived in Nicaragua for over a decade. The people, traditions, and sense of family here continue to inspire me.

The Little Chef is my way of sharing that love of culture, food, and human connection—through a story meant to be both gentle and hopeful for young readers.(less)

Three Kids, One Book

Today I glanced over and saw three kids lying side by side, completely absorbed in The Little Chef.

No instructions. No assignments. Just quiet reading together.

In a world full of screens and distractions, moments like that feel rare and special.

Seeing children share a story like that is exactly why I started writing.
