From the very beginning, I was drawn into the simple yet whimsical worldbuilding A.J. Knight creates. It never feels overworked or heavy-handed; instead, the setting unfolds naturally, allowing the emotional core of the story to take center stage. There’s an intentional softness to the world that perfectly mirrors the themes of love, fate, and longing woven throughout the novel.

What truly stood out to me was the author’s writing style. Knight’s prose is lyrical yet beautifully simple—emotionally rich without being overly ornate. Every sentence feels purposeful, and the emotional beats land with a quiet intensity that lingers long after you’ve turned the page. It’s the kind of writing that doesn’t demand attention, but earns it.

I’ll admit, before reading this book, I had never given much thought to concepts like reincarnation or fated mates. They weren’t tropes I felt particularly drawn to. But Always, Her completely ruptured me in the best way. The way these ideas are handled feels deeply human rather than fantastical—grounded in love, grief, and the ache of finding someone again and again across lifetimes. I devoured this book in two days because I simply could not put it down.

The romance is where this story truly shines. It is beautiful, emotional, raw, and achingly real. There’s no glossing over the hard parts of loving someone—only honesty. The connection between the characters feels earned, lived-in, and profoundly intimate, which makes their journey all the more powerful.

Knight also excels at characterization and pacing. Each character feels fully realized, with clear motivations and emotional depth. The pacing allows their relationships to unfold naturally, giving the reader time to understand who these people are and why their bond matters so deeply. Nothing feels rushed or underdeveloped; instead, the story flows with a steady, comforting rhythm that pulls you forward.

As the stakes rise, she faces new trials, treacherous journeys, and the challenge of stepping into her own strength — all while navigating complex relationships with those around her.

What truly sets this story apart is how K.M. Gordon weaves together rich world-building with compelling character moments. The kingdoms, the lore of the Elderoak, and the magical landscapes are vividly imagined and immersive, making it easy to lose yourself in this fantastical setting. The author balances moments of tension with cozy interludes among Ava’s found family and allies, giving depth and texture to the world that goes beyond simple backdrop and becomes a delight to explore. Whether it’s the humor and loyalty of side characters like Raine or the nuanced dynamics between Ava and Cas, there’s a richness here that keeps the pages turning.

This second installment raises the stakes in all the best ways, and I loved seeing Ava’s journey to where she ends up by the book’s close. She’s a heroine who feels deeply relatable — she struggles with anxiety, self-doubt, and fear, yet slowly learns to trust her instincts and grow into her power. Watching her confront her internal battles alongside external threats was both moving and inspiring. And of course, the slow-burn romance between Ava and Cas is one of my favorite parts of the series; instead of the usual brooding “shadow daddy” trope, Cass is the let-me-make-you-a-cup-of-tea, sit-by-the-fire, foot-rub type of partner, which feels refreshingly tender and grounded. I went into Quicksilver with fairly decent expectations, mostly because of the sheer amount of hype surrounding it. And to be fair, the beginning genuinely worked for me. And to be fair, the beginning genuinely worked for me. I actually enjoyed the opening chapters, even though the main character made several impulsive and questionable decisions. Given the setting and the environment she was raised in, those choices were at least understandable. Her brother was… low-key annoying, but in a way that felt intentional on the author’s part, so I didn’t mind it too much.

Unfortunately, after that strong start, the story began to fall flat for me.

The writing itself was fine—solid, readable, nothing glaringly bad—but my biggest issue by far was the love interest. Kingfisher just did not work for me. His character triggered a lot of uncomfortable high school memories: overly loud, brash, rude, hormonally charged men who mistake arrogance for charm. That was his vibe for the entire book, and even when he eventually confesses his feelings, I still felt zero emotional pull toward him. I simply couldn’t root for the romance.

The main character also started to lose me as the story went on. It felt like the narrative wanted her to be a strong, headstrong heroine, but instead she came across as trying too hard. Once Kingfisher entered the picture, a lot of her agency and backbone seemed to evaporate, which made her arc feel inconsistent and disappointing.

Plot-wise, the pacing was chaotic. Some sections moved way too fast when they needed more development, while other moments—especially the spicier scenes—were so overdramatic and drawn out that they lost all impact for me. I didn’t feel any real chemistry or emotional weight behind the “shipping,” which made those scenes fall especially flat.

The fated mates trope also didn’t land. While I know it’s a popular and well-loved trope, here it felt like a watered-down imitation of Rhysand from A Court of Thorns and Roses, right down to specific details. Inspiration is one thing, but this leaned so heavily into familiar shadow-daddy romantic tropes that the story struggled to feel original. It felt more like a mashup of trending romantasy elements than a fully realized, unique narrative.

That said—credit where credit is due—my favorite character in the entire book was actually a side character: Carrion Swift. He was easily the most compelling, interesting, and enjoyable presence on the page, and honestly, he carried the story for me whenever he appeared.

Overall, Quicksilver had a promising start but ultimately didn’t deliver for me. I’m on the fence about continuing the series, and while I understand why this book resonates with a lot of readers, it just wasn’t a hit for me personally. ...more
