Editorial Reviews of Living Artfully: At Home With Marjorie Merriweather Post

But as soon as I opened “Living Artfully: At Home with Marjorie Merriweather Post,” I could hear my pulse pounding. Because this woman not only had mountains of money, she used it to create her idea of a beautiful life.—Jesse Kornbluth, Headbutler.com

While her fortune was vast, so was her spirit—she excelled at generosity and thoughtfulness, qualities that never go out of style.—Charlotte Moss, The Wall Street Journal

It is a world of footmen and groundskeepers, of personal chefs and women who would unpack and iron a guest’s clothing— Lonnae O’Neal Parker, The Washington Post

Post collected Sioux moccasins and Fabergé enamels while treating pets royally— Eve M. Kahn, The New York Times

The outgoing, glamorous Post, who inherited her family's Postum Cereal Company, which is now part of Kraft Inc., ran her estate very much like a business -- specifically a hotel, welcoming people from all walks of life, all the time— Doug Rule, Metro Weekly

A showcase of Post’s glamorous day-to-day life during her heyday, and the behind-the-scenes work that made it all happen— William O’Connor, The Daily Beast

Gives a fascinating insight into the glamorous life enjoyed in her three stylish homes…She sounds great fun.— Tim Forrest, The Lady

Study Day - Classic Chic: Interior Design for Living Artfully
September 21, 2013
Hillwood's distinct blend of lavish French interiors with mid-century modern amenities made it one of Washington’s most memorable homes when Marjorie Post lived and entertained here in the 1950s and 60s. Inspired by the special exhibition, Living Artfully, which explores Marjorie’s perfectly coordinated way of living, this special day-long study of French-inspired design includes presentations by Hillwood curators Liana Paredes and Estella Chung, esteemed New York designer Michael Simon— whose philosophy so perfectly fits with Marjorie Post’s imprint at Hillwood—and James Archer Abbott from Evergreen Museum and Library. Book signing to follow. Ticket info on Hillwood Museum website.

What was on Marjorie Post's bookshelves?

A reader in Augusta, Georgia that enjoyed "Living Artfully" asked what did Marjorie Post read? Post's owned finely bound copies of The Complete Book of Opera, The Poems of John Keats, Uncle Tom's Cabin, and Les Miserables, among titles. Popular books included titles on entertaining, yoga, and poodle care. The books are on view in the First and Second floor libraries of the Hillwood mansion (open as a museum). Many thanks for your reader question!
