I'm senior strategist at NPR - a title that doesn't explain much, because the type of work I do didn't exist 10 years ago and they're still trying to figure out what to make of it. I'm a journalistic test pilot - I try out new platforms and services that can improve our journalism, particularly if it can involve contributions from the public.

Since late 2010, I've spent a lot of energy using social media to cover the Arab Spring, and it's resulted in my first book: Distant Witness. The book explores how I became an embedded reporter among revolutionaries in North Africa and the Middle East - yet I did it all remotely via social media.
