Like the main character in his novel "The Unlived Lives of Raymond Quinn," William Matthies served in the U.S. Army including a year-long stint in Vietnam during the war.

After leaving the service, Matthies graduated college, married, raised two sons, and eventually found his true calling as a serial entrepreneur. His first book, The 7 Keys to Change, is based on years of research on personal and professional change management.

His other accomplishments include earning a lifetime ban from Catalina Island, viewing Earth from 80,000 feet during a Mach 2.5 flight in a supersonic aircraft, and remaining an absolute beginner after "playing" guitar for more than three decades.

If possible carry a small notebook with you wherever you go. You will have random thoughts that may be useful later. And if you don't want to add that to your pocket (I rarely do) make notes on your phone.(less)

Trite to say; this is advice from those who are real writers, which I am not.

Write.

You won't improve if you do not continually write. Just get it down on the page and then rewrite. When done with that rewrite the rewrite. When that's done do it all once more continuing to rewrite until you can't bear to read what you've written.

When that happens turn it over to at least one professional editor; someone who knows what they're doing (all who call themselves an editor don't). Someone whose personality will mesh with yours. (less)

Occasionally lost

There were a number of people to keep track of, which I wasn't always able to do. But that wasn't McCullough's fault. I've never been particularly good with names, both people and in books. Still, the story's arc kept me coming back

Much more than I knew.

I believed that both the North and South mistreated their POWs. To some extent that may be true, but now I know that mistreatment in the south of Northern POWs was far greater than it was for southern POWs in the North. The best

Unbelievable!

I don't know if it's the courage of these men or the research required to write this book about them that impresses me the most. I've read a few hundred books regarding WW II in Europe and the Pacific. There's no choosing who experienced

Ok, truth be told, while I thought it might be interesting, it was the $2.99 price that got me to buy it.

Whatever the case, I'm glad I did, it checked all my great book boxes.

Remember the poem used to teach kids something about Columbus? The one tha
