There is so much that needs to be unleashed, but not enough time to effectively capture the flow.

In order to improve my storytelling I have ditched writing in the conventional form - using fingers (either on a keyboard or with a pen) - and instead have created a system whereby I dictate my stories, often whilst walking, driving, or laying down in the dark, with a glass of red wine. This approach allows me to forget about the brain to finger connection and simply tell the story as it flows through me.

It is an incredible process, for you can immerse yourself in the story, look around at the scene and describe it in real time. I find dialogue considerably more realistic as you can use accents and tones for dramatic effect, feeling your way into each character.

Now, you may wonder how these dictations are converted into meaningful transcripts that I add into the main story document. It took some time to perfect and I can elaborate, if anyone is interested. My forthcoming novel, Eve and the Tree, was written entirely in this manner and contains by far the least 'writerly' prose I have created. It is relaxed and feels authentic. Most importantly, it has saved my eyes countless hours of computer screen glare.

Perhaps going for a walk and using your voice to tell stories can be an effective remedy for writer's block. Don't be phased by the mechanics of dictation. Your smartphone and a set of headphones with a microphone is all you need to get started. Contact me if you'd like to find out more.(less)

What Is Shitty Flow? The Hidden Cost of High Performance

Why the modern flow narrative doesn’t go far enough — and what flow without direction is really costing us, personally and collectively.

For most of my career, I was a true believer in flow.

I trained thousands of people in the Golden Zone model — match your skills to the challenge, notice anxiety if the challenge exceeds your skills, notice boredom if your skills exceed the challenge, a

“The opportunity is before you – you’ve said hello to the beautiful stranger, you’ve accepted the job, you’re about to sign that dotted line – don’t pull back. Don’t even think of pulling back. Don’t even think. Life is about moments of heightened emotion whether good or bad. This is your heightened moment, relish and embrace it. This is you – alive.”
