An Answer to a Dilemma or a Mistake? You Tell Me...

Hello again everyone. Hope you've all been doing well. As for me and Helen we've had a LOT on our plate lately to deal with. However, we're not abandoning our readers by any means.

We're still getting settled into our new home, which of course seems like a never-ending task, plus Helen is putting in for a number of jobs, especially in the realm of state, county, and city employment. And of course, I've been still contending with Social Security and trying to bring my now 2-year ongoing efforts to get approved for SSDI.

Oh, and did I mention Halloween is coming up? We're big fans and have plans which include FINALLY getting The Library of the Obscure YouTube channel fully up and running. I'm hoping to release a "Coming Soon" video (which I will feature here as well as elsewhere) very soon. Certainly, before Halloween, because I want to drop the first video either on the day before Halloween, or on that day. Haven't fully decided. We'll see what happens. I'm hoping to do some video recording this weekend so I can finish compiling everything into a coherent and hopefully entertaining format for you all. So, keep your eyes and ears open.

And it suddenly occurs to me that I've been going on about anything but what we were talking about in the last entry, haven't I?

(All of you...)

Okay... getting down to the business of Cassandra Elliott, her ghostly ancestors, and "The Door".

As I stated in my last entry, there will be a crossover between the final events of Cassandra and company, entering "The Door" where a huge final confrontation will be taking place, and another final confrontation that would be taking place back in the early 1800's with her ancestor Brandon Elliott when he was still alive.
Now, I've had "The Door" well under way (close to 70,000 words give or take) for several years, you'd think I was really close to finishing a 1st draft. Unfortunately, that is not the case. There's a lot of unfinished sections, and fragments that need to be either placed, or removed entirely. And the story is nowhere near complete. In fact, I'd already considered breaking it up into two volumes because so much is going on in this story, such as following up with Alex and Veronica's wedding, their finding of Rachel's baby at the end of "The Bridge" and how they deal with that situation. Cassandra and Julie's continuing romance, the mysterious Z and the offspring of the creature from the bridge, ghostly Brandon and Cassandra's other ghostly ancestors who appeared in "The Ship", to name a few. In short, way too much to try and wrap up neatly in just one volume.
Then there's Brandon's story set in the early 1800's, which was already going to be broken up into at least two volumes. Now I already have a complete 1st draft of volume 1. And I have a lot of concrete ideas and plans for Volume II. And there might be a Volume III, who knows?
So, in both cases, the stories are long and informative as well as eventually crossing over towards their respective endings. How to handle all this without being repetitious and kind of less surprising for the audiences?
Well, the idea I'm leaning towards is as follows. I have pretty solid ideas of where each of the respective first volumes are headed and how 'packed' they are. The same does not entirely hold true for the two second volumes of each timeline. So, I'm considering finishing and releasing Brandon's 1st volume (since I already have a finished 1st draft), and then releasing Cassandra's 1st volume (currently titled "The Door").
Then, what I'm thinking of is taking the 2nd half 0f both timelines and combing them into one volume where we bounce back and forth between the centuries and culminate in the crossover final confrontation.
I think this would be satisfying for all concerned without resulting in repetition of the same events in two entirely different books.

But of course, I'm just the author, or rather one of them. What do you readers think? Do you like this idea? Let us know in the comments section below. We'd love to hear what you all have to say.
Until next time, stay safe and keep writing and reading everyone.

Been Looking Over My Earliest Blog Posts and.... AAAAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!!!

Yeah... the title for this entry pretty much sums up my feelings today. Why? You ask... or maybe not, after all I'm not inside your heads. But if you are asking that question, well the answer is "THE DOOR"!

Now I might be hearing some of you saying, "A door? What door?"

Well, here's a little reminder...

Yeah, THAT one. The one I've been going on about for months and even a couple of years. Sadly, it hasn't exactly been just a couple of years. After going over my entries for this blog it turns our that I've apparently been going on about this book since about... 2013.

Cue embarrassment...

Damn it! Why is there never a nice big rock (preferably the size of a small mountain) to crawl under when you need it?
Well, since said rock isn't about to make a helpful appearance anytime soon, I may as well give you the rest of the explanation. A severe, and I do mean SEVERE case of Writer's Block has been plaguing me when it comes to this book for quite some time. However, it wasn't until I was going over my earliest entries on this blog that I fully realized that this has been going on for over 10 years! (Now you know where the " ARGH"  in the title of this entry comes in)
Now you may be wondering what exactly has been the sticking point in this story that I haven't been able to overcome? Well, it's a particular scene which involves Cassandra Elliott and her ghostly guardian Brandon Elliott. Both have appeared in our first two Para-Earth novels "The Bridge" and "The Ship". Now exactly why Brandon (and a couple of other ancestors) watch over Cassandra has never been fully revealed. But their connection is strong, and the scene I have in mind would involve the two of them coming face-to-face meeting at a time when Brandon was still alive!
Cue possible time travel options...

Now the relevance of this meeting affects not just Cassandra's modern day story, but another book I've been planning for quite some time. Back when I first started working on "The Door", I began plotting another book that would focus on Brandon and his family back in the 1800's and would help explain the threat (a certain white-haired man) who has been following Cassandra throughout our first 2 books "The Bridge" and "The Ship", and his connection to the Para-Earths.

I even went so far as to complete a 1st draft of Brandon's story (or at least the first half of his story-- yeah, there will be at least 2 books in his story... or possibly more who knows). So I already have yet another book waiting to be given the 2nd and 3rd draft treatments. However, the meeting with Cassandra is the key to wrapping the 2nd novel in Brandon's story. Yet at the same time, that same meeting is also the big climactic scene of "The Door"!

Now this leaves me with the problem of possibly repeating the events of the Big Boss level and how he's defeated in not one but two different books! I'm sure a number of you have realized the enormity of this situation. If I go down the road of sharing the events o what goes down during the final battle in both books, while sharing it from two or more characters' point of view, the actual events would already be familiar to some or most of the readers, thus lessening the impact of the events and the outcome of the confrontation. Or, I could simply cut the scene from one book and have the character from it disappear from sight of their friends and allies, and focus on the battle of those folks are waging (which admittedly could be interesting if done correctly) but it might feel less satisfying for the audience.

So what should I do?

NEXT TIME: A UNIQUE SOLUTION?
Stay tuned folks, and keep writing and take care.

Setting Things Up For the Library of the Obscure

" 'Cause, nothing ever goes as plannedIt's a hell of a notionEven Pharaohs turn to sandLike a drop in the ocean..."
This is a snippet from the Styx song "Nothing Ever Goes as Planned", from their Paradise Theater album (one of my favorites albums I'll admit).
Anyway, what does a Styx song have to do with today's topic for this blog entry? EVERYTHING!
When we were still house hunting and came across what would become our new home,

One of the things that really attracted us was the basement. It was set up almost like an old 1980's arcade, complete with black lights, an arcade game, a projector, and a black light carpet. See image below

It was so wild when we had the black lights on, we started joking about holding 80's parties down in it.
But of course... (cue the Styx song)
That's right! You guessed it. Things didn't quite go the way we had been hoping. While we were in contract and had a home inspection done, it was discovered that some leaking had been taking place against one of the walls, and mold had formed underneath that 'cool-looking' black light carpeting. The result was...well, see for yourself.

Luckily for us, we had asked for an allowance in our offer to help offset some repairs in the place and the sellers were very agreeable. So, after closing and we moved in, for the next 3-4 weeks, that was what our basement looked like. Eventually, we got carpeting installed, and then had to wait for the painters to come and finish the room, as well as installing the new moulding around the windows and along the carpet/wall areas.
All of that was finally finished about a week and a half ago, and here was the new look for the basement room.

So, you may be wondering at this point, "What the hell does any of this have to do with the Library of the Obscure, you've been going on about for several months now?"
Well, besides having a podcast version of The Library of the Obscure, I've also been wanting to also put up a YouTube channel, which would have openings and closings, similar to what I did my unabridged reading/presentation of Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol". For those who've not seen that video, I show up on screen at the beginning and ending of the story, and share information about the tale I've presented and about both the author and the story, that many people have never heard before. And it is that same kind of approach, I wish to give "The Library of the Obscure".
And as I did in "A Christmas Carol", each tale will have imagery and sound effects, to enhance the storytelling experience for the viewer. But I also with to have different backgrounds during my appearances to add to the experience... and a few laughs. Picture something like Svengoolie or Elvira, only with stories instead of movies being presented.
But in order to accomplish this goal, I've needed a good place to do some actual filming. And that's where the basement in our new house comes in. As you can see from the images, the room is fairly long and will hopefully allow me to come up with some interesting shots, as well as putting together an opening and closing sequence that will appear in every episode (in addition to my actual appearances where I share information and introduce the story of the day).
So when will all that start happening? Well...

As you can see I have my lights, my green screen cloth, and a couple of cameras (not in the shot). And this weekend I'm going to try making some test footage to see what I can do with backgrounds and any kind of special effects we might be able to pull off. Mind you, don't expect anything 'professional', but I hope to amuse and entertain you to the best of my abilities.
I have over 50 short stories lined up to present to you over time, 8 of which are already recorded. And six of those have already been edited and given sound effects. Just need some imagery for a couple, as well as filming my openings and closings as your host "The Curator of the Library" for each one. In time Helen will be appearing on screen as well as the LIBRARIAN, a figure who keeps everyone (including the Curator) in line.
My goal at the present time, is to release a new episode once every 2 weeks. I promise to keep you all informed as to our progress, but I am hoping to put up the first couple of videos and podcasts by late next month, or October 1st just in time for the  SPOOKY SEASON!
Finally, I'd like to reassure you all, that in addition to all this, I AM still working on writing. The 2nd book in "The Pass" trilogy which I'm doing with my friend from high school "Richard Caminiti" (who by the way has just become a grandfather for the 1st time, to a fine pair of twin boys courtesy of his son and daughter-in-law). All are doing well from what I've been hearing. And I'm constantly sending wishes for much love and happiness to them all.
Originally, we had hoped to release the 2nd book in the trilogy later this year, but with moving and life getting in the way, not a lot of progress has been made. I also have to take a crack at doing some pen and ink work for the book, as our previous artist Gabby Callan has moved on to other projects of her own and from what I've heard she's doing very well. Go Gabby!
With all that said, we're hoping to release book 2 sometime next year, and at the same time be putting the final touches on book 3 for release in the following year.
So that's where things stand at the moment. And yes, I am still working on both "The Door" and "The Vampyre Blogs - Family Ties" novels. So stay tuned for more on those fronts.
That's all for now. Wish me luck this weekend and perhaps I'll share a couple of glimpses from the upcoming screen tests for the Library of the Obscure.
Until next time, take care and keep writing and recording everyone.

Getting Settled In...

Well... this is my first post from our new home (shown above) in Washington State. It's been quite the journey to get here, as well as settle in. It's a whole new experience for all of us, and yet kind of familiar at the same time. At least for Helen, her brother, and their mother. They've all lived under the same roof together before. I'm the newbie in this case, aside from growing up with my own family of course.

Luckily, we got a pretty good idea of how we'd all click based on the Verbo places we all stayed in on our previous visits to Washington, during our house hunting. Mind you, none of this would've ever been possible for just Helen and me. Between health issues for both of us, (and me having had to retire due to disability) affording much less managing an entire house would've been a Herculean task.

However, after my mom took ill and before she passed last October, Helen's mother brought up an idea Helen had suggested a couple of years ago, about one day combining our households under one roof. At the time Helen had proposed the idea, her mom had been open to thinking about the idea down the road. However, during the following years the ever-worsening heat spells where she lived in Stockton and increasing drought seasons, she was now ready to pull up stakes and relocate. Once we were all agreed now was the time, we all proceeded to focus our search to the upper part of California or Washington state. That's when our efforts really got under way.

Eventually, we figured out Washington would be the better prospect both financially, as well as environmentally. Plus, there would be better job opportunities for Helen and her brother. So, we made plans to come check out several areas of Washington state.

Our first couple of visits where to the Tacoma region, Bremerton/Port Orchard, and the Olympia/Lacey/Tumwater vicinities. Eventually, we narrowed our search down to Olympia/Lacey and Tumwater. And after more research and visits, we found one place we liked. Unfortunately, we could not come to an agreement with the current owner. They did not want to make any repairs, or haggle on the price so we could afford to make necessary repairs to the place, so in the end that one did not pan out.

On a later visit to the state, we found this place and it was perfect. Helen's mom had already put her current house, back in Stockton California, on the market, to help pay for the new place. Naturally, Helen and I kicked in money as well, along with her brother, to help buy our new home. Otherwise, as I said earlier, there was no way Helen and I could ever afford to buy a decent sized home on our own. Especially, not in Santa Cruz California where we'd been living. Seriously. Even a decent 1100-1400 sf home would average close to 1 million dollars around there, no exaggeration.

After we made our offer and it was accepted, Helen and I (who had been packing for months already because we knew a move was coming eventually), got a storage locker to put a lot of our already packed boxes in.

It was during this time that my mom passed away (last October). Naturally, Helen and I, had to travel back east (to Long Island, NY) to help my brothers with going through mom's stuff and closing out her apartment. It was a very difficult time for all, but we managed to get through it. Of course, we all still miss her in our own ways. In my case, I used to make a cup of tea and sit down at the table to call her every Saturday morning. And Mom would be waiting for my call with a cup of tea at her end (because we always had tea together when we lived close by), and we'd just chat like we always did about everything and nothing. After she died, whenever Saturday rolled around, I'd find myself making a cup of tea and reaching for my phone... only to remember she wouldn't be there to pick up anymore.

Of course, I still have those days and really miss those talks. But I know she's with my stepfather, who she adored and loved very much, and that helps.

(Hard to type with wet eyes... sorry)

TO BE CONTINUED...

Memorial Day Tale from my Other Site: "The Vampyre Blogs - Privated Edition" Blog...

*Author's Note: This short story first appeared on our other site The Vampyre Blogs - Private Edition (link: https://www.thevampyreblogs.com/). This site features mainly short stories involving Allan's long-lived 'Para-Earth' vampyre character Nathaniel Eoghan Steward, and his friends who know his secret. Nathan was serving in the Union Army during the Civil War, when he was 'changed' by a life-form from Para-Earth that has given him such a long life as well as many traditional vampire-like abilities, as well as limitations. However, this tale involves the history of Memorial Day from when it was first celebrated on, and seemed like an appropriate story to share with you all. So without further ado, I present  you with the tale of "The Soldier":

May 1999 - Memorial Day, From the Journal of Brian Weston:

The Soldier appeared again this year, just as he has over almost a hundred and fifty years.  The first reports of him showing up here in Pointer date back to 1868 when the first Decoration Day (now called Memorial Day) was held.  At the time most people assumed he was merely a veteran but when he moved there was no sound, and when he spoke everyone felt compelled to listen.  It was as if an enchantment had been cast over all.  He spoke of each soldier from the town who had fallen during the war between the states, telling tales of bravery and humanity. Then, once he finished, the figure marched back the way he came only to be swallowed by a mist that seemed to come from nowhere.

This happened again the following year, and every year after that.  At first most people just assumed him to be a magician who had served alongside those who had died.  Yet, none of those who had come home recognized the fellow.  In fact, no one could even really describe his features even if he had been standing next to them.  They could distinctly remember his uniform which had clearly belonged to the West Virginia 7th Volunteer Infantry Regiment.  He had all the bearing of a soldier, but even if they looked up into his face all they could remember was that he was young, with a kind face, which had born witness to the horrors of the battlefield.  But none of them could actually describe his face in detail.
Naturally the idea that the fellow was a ghost began to spread among the children and a handful of adults.  But after thirty years passed and those children who had seen him close up could honestly say he had not aged in that time, that others began to believe the tale.

Throughout the decades, he has always appeared, never once missing a Decoration Day.  And with each visit, he shared new stories about those who had served and fell in the Civil War.  But it wasn't until the end of the Great War that this began to change.  In 1919, one year after World War I ended, a new monument was erected in the town square with the names of those who had left Pointer to fight overseas.  On that occasion the soldier appeared and shared several stories about those who had been lost on the battlefields of Europe.
From that day on he continued to appear on Remembrance Day (now called Veteran's Day) as well as on Memorial Day.

By this time few, if any, doubted the Soldier's existence.  In fact many began to welcome his strange visits, but not all.  Those who were too traumatized by their loss, could not bear to see him come.  In particular there had been Violet Parker, who had been engaged to James Moore who fell at the Battle of Belleau Wood in France in 1918.  When the Soldier appeared again on Remembrance Day in 1920, she rushed at him brandishing a pistol from her father's collection and shot him point blank.  The Soldier did not flinch, nor did he fall.  Instead, he gently took the weapon from her shaking hands, and  pulled her close.  She resisted at first, but then began to calm down.  Those who dared approach them could hear his voice speaking gently to her in sympathy.  Soon Violet slipped her arms around him and held him tightly.  Then she kissed him on the cheek and walked back to where her father stood.  For the rest of her long life, she was happier than anyone could remember, and strongly rebuked anyone who spoke ill of the Soldier or of anyone who served their country.
The addition of new names and stories of those who served that the Soldier spoke of continued with  each passing year.  Whether they were lost in peacetime or during America's entry into World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, Iraq and of course Afghanistan, he made sure no one forgot them or their service.  And today was no exception.  He spoke of the town's most recent losses with such feeling, one was convinced he had personally known, or had watched each one of those lost grow into fine young men and women.
Of course, I and a number of others know this happens to be the truth.  There are at least a dozen families here in Pointer that know of Uncle Nate.  And they preserve his secret with fierce loyalty, just as mine does.  It is a loyalty based on love and respect.  Whether he's the 'Soldier' or just the family friend or godfather, he has been there for all of us over the decades.  Our dark guardian, the soldier who even when he does not wear the uniform, is always on duty.  Ready to defend and protect all of us and our town, just has he did the day he marched off to war at the age of 16, back in 1862.
God bless him and all the men and women who have served, and will serve.

Life Really Gets in the Way Sometimes...

Hello everyone, and welcome to my first blog post for 2025. I know it's been a while since I last posted anything on this blog, but as the title of this entry says... life and reality has REALLY been demanding so much of my time and energies.

And since it's been so long since my last post, let me quickly recap where I left off...

I had located the crystal ball my wife gave me for my birthday many years ago and was contemplating looking into it to see if a wheelchair might be in my future due to my continuing leg and back issues. Well, here's the real-life answer as to that question...

So yeah... this has come to pass. Mind you, I am getting used to it. Plus, I'm not in the chair all that often. I mostly use it on long outings and excursions with family and friends. (Sadly, for me these days a long outing lasts more than 15 minutes on my feet for the most part before the pain and numbing of my hips/legs/and feet become intolerable). Still, I really like being able to be out and about with those I love and exploring my surroundings, so it's a trade-off I'm willing to tolerate. Otherwise, I'd be mostly homebound and believe me when I say I am very prone to 'cabin-fever'.

Another upside to this change in my situation is the fact that it has allowed me to explore some of my characters like Cassandra Elliott from "The Bridge" and "The Ship". While she has not been put into a wheelchair in either of those books, the threat that she might become dependent on such a device to do her Epstein-Barr Syndrome, was highlighted in "The Ship". Now, as to whether or not being unable or having severe difficulties walking is something she'll have to face, you'll have to wait for the next novel "The Door".

Yes, I know I've talked about the book for a number of years now, but it is still being worked on, I haven't abandoned it. Although I have to admit most of the work that I've done on it has been mental, the book is still going to be finished and published. Though lately, I've been starting to wonder if part of the writer's block I've been dealing with in writing that book, has been my own fears and worries about my own situation. On the other hand, now I have a lot more of real-life experience to draw upon for how to write Cassandra possibly having to come to grips with a disability like mine. So, we shall see how that story unfolds, won't we?

But that hasn't been all that I've been having to deal with for the last 2 years.

Well, due to ongoing health issues (for both me and Helen), along with me struggling to get Social Security Disability for the last year and a half, and the recent passing of my mother back in New York last October, we've had a lot on our plates. And now a new situation has arisen, which could involve us moving out of California and heading northwards.

This possibility arose out of several circumstances. One of which involves us currently living on the second floor of an apartment complex. Naturally, with my mobility issues getting worse and worse, I've been finding the stairs (we don't have an elevator at this place since it's only 2 stories) more and more of a problem to deal with. Another is the fact that with my mother's passing, Helen's mother who is now in her early 80's has become more thoughtful and concerned about her own situation. Mind you she's a very active woman, you'd never think she was an octogenarian, but she's worried about when she might start slowing down and need more help. And after living many years in the San Joaquin valley where the summers are getting hotter and hotter every year (last year alone had 32 days of 100+ degree temperatures, with predictions it will get worse in the near future) she started giving thought to moving. Well, after several family talks, it was suggested we all move into a place together (somewhere cooler of course) so we can all be there for one another.

So, at the end of this past January, Helen, her brother, mother and I headed up north to Washington state to see what we thought of the climate and housing prices. Long story short, we fell in love with all of it and even put an offer in on a place. Mind you, the sale is contingent on Helen's mom being able to sell her place, but we have time. So, at this point, we don't have an actual time or date of moving. But even so, there is still so much to do. We must continue researching, organizing, going through things in our respective homes regarding what to keep, what to get rid of, etc.

All of this of course means, neither Helen nor I have as much time or mental energies for writing or creating. However, we are going to try to keep working on our projects, and hopefully before the end of this year, we will both have some new books and audios out for your enjoyment. So please bear with us and we will do our very best to keep you all up to date on the latest developments.

We love you all and...

We thank you so much for all your support.
And as always, stay safe, please take care of one another, and keep writing and creating my friends.

An Early Halloween Treat for You All...

This year has been 'difficult' for me on a number of fronts, some of which I've already shared with you. Still there are others, that are still ongoing and taking up a lot of my time and brain power. I have actually done a number of audio short stories which are perfect for this time of year, I just haven't had the time to really gather and piece together videos to present on YouTube for my "Library of the Obscure" channel.
However, if any of you wish to hear any those recordings (complete with sound effects), I'll be happy to post them as a prelude to the podcast itself here on this blog as well as on the Library of the Obscure YouTube channel.
Please let me know what you think by leaving your thoughts in the comments section below.
In the meantime, here's the link to a story by Lord Dunsany (one of HP Lovecraft's greatest influences), that I shared last year.
I hope you enjoy this tale, and I thank you for your understanding...

NOTE: I will be adding one or two more audios for the season before Halloween itself, so stay tuned.
