The Intel Report – August 2025

Dear Readers,

In my last newsletter, I shared my incredible experience at the Sonoma Valley Authors Festival this past May. Among the many insightful speakers was Sal Khan, the visionary behind Khan Academy. His talk about the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI)—especially in education—was nothing short of inspiring.

Sal introduced us to Khanmigo, an AI tool designed not to tell students what to write or think, but to engage them in thoughtful conversation and critical thinking. Educators are using it to build custom study plans tailored to their students’ needs. For someone like me—who has always approached technology cautiously—it was a refreshing and hopeful perspective on how AI can enhance human creativity rather than replace it.

Bringing AI into My World as an Author

Soon after I returned home, I discovered something fascinating on Kindle Direct Publishing: authors can now create audiobooks of their paperbacks using an AI narrator. At first, I was skeptical—would it sound robotic? Would it lack emotion?

That doubt quickly turned into curiosity. So I experimented, starting with my very first novel, Brotherhood Beyond the Yard (published in 2011). Kindle offers a variety of AI voices—different genders, regional accents, and tones. After testing a few, I selected two American English male voices and got to work.

The process? Time-consuming. Every word required attention—adjusting pauses, fixing typos, and fine-tuning the rhythm. But the result? Surprisingly human. The AI even captured excitement in dialogue, nailed foreign words, and delivered a polished listening experience.

Now Available in Audiobook Format
I’m excited to announce that the first two novels in the Simon Hall Thriller series
Brotherhood Beyond the Yard
Noble’s Quest
—are now available as audiobooks!

The third, The Ultimate Revenge, will be released later this month.

My Thoughts on AI in Writing

Like the Internet, AI is a tool—and, yes, it can be misused. But when used ethically and creatively, it holds real potential. I will continue to work with a professional narrator (like the incredible one I hired for Climatized and The Beekeeper’s Secret), but for this series, AI provided a unique and valuable solution.

And while I may use AI tools from time to time to brainstorm or push past writer’s block, the creative process and the final voice will always be mine. That’s a promise.

I’d love to know what you think.
If you listen to the audiobooks, please don’t hesitate to share your honest feedback. Your input means the world to me as I continue to grow, learn, and explore new creative horizons.

With appreciation,
Sally Fernandez

The Intel Report – May 2025

Dear Readers,

What a month it’s been! I’m thrilled to share that I recently attended the eighth annual Sonoma Valley Authors Festival in Sonoma, California, founded by David and Ginny Freeman. It was a spectacular gathering of thought leaders, authors, and readers nestled in the heart of wine country at the beautiful Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn Resort.

From riveting conversations with investigative journalist Patrick Radden Keefe, also an award-winning staff writer at The New Yorker magazine; to powerful insights on education and artificial intelligence from Sal Khan, founder and CEO of Khan Academy; to inspiring interviews hosted by Jeffrey Brown, senior correspondent for the PBS NewsHour with literary giants Michael Connellyand Isabel Allende. Every moment was a reminder of the enduring power of the written word.

Being surrounded by such an extraordinary group of minds was not only humbling, but it also reignited my passion for writing, compelling stories grounded in truth, strategy, and the intrigue of politics. Stay tuned…new pages are in the works.

In the meantime, if you’re new to my work or want to revisit the world of Simon & Max, visit www.sallyfernandez.com for all the latest books, background stories, and more.

Happenings from the Writing Cave in the New Year 2025

For those of you who have been following my scarcity of Newsletters, you know that Joe, my beloved husband and editor, passed away a year ago. While it has been a tough year, it has also been a year of introspection. Officially, I have completed all of my “first”…anniversaries, birthdays, holidays, etc. without the love of my life. The good news…I think I’ve come out the other side…whole!

I have now entered a new phase, and as I look at my surroundings with photos and memories galore, I am reminded of how fortunate I was to have had Joe in my life for so many years…forty-five to be exact. Yes, I was very young when we first met. 😉

While I’ve never been one for New Year’s resolutions, assuming they were meant to be broken, I decided this year I’d make one to keep:

To no longer mourn the loss of Joe,
to smile every time a thought of him passes through my mind,
to complete all the projects we started together,
and to believe he is still critiquing me as he smiles from above.

Joe knew how to live life better than anyone I’ve ever known. I need to learn by example. He is no longer my earthly friend, husband or editor — but he will always be my Muse.

It’s Time to get Back to WorkThe first challenge is The Infiltrator’s Shadow. I’ve mentioned several times in past Newsletters that I was about to take my tome off the virtual shelf and give it a good dusting. And each time I mentioned it, I had all intentions of following through…but to no avail. The difficulty has been the ever-moving political landscape. I write provocative political thrillers steeped in facts, so the facts detailed in my plotlines must be accurate. But accuracy has been like a boomerang. Just as you think you’ve nailed it; it comes flying back with fresh revelations questioning your original assumptions. The second and most frustrating aspect is that I initially weaved in the conspiracy about the origin of the COVID-19 virus and the outcome of the 2020 Presidential election. Well, my election predictions went sideways, even though the origin of COVID-19 is reportedly unknown. So, I thought flashbacks might work for the election and then I’d do a repeat. Except the repeat changed mid-stream and Biden stepped out of the race to be replaced by Kamala. That one threw me off completely. However, my conspiracy surrounding the virus finally proved correct…it came from the lab in Wuhan. But it killed my first, and might I say quite intriguing chapter. The saving grace from my very dusty manuscript, however, is that the basic plotline with Max fighting to expose the Consortium holds, to complete the Max Ford Thriller series. Now, with a plethora of new facts whirling out of Spin City, I’m not sure where they will lead, but confident it will all shake out. The new Trump presidency, the diverse Cabinet picks, and let’s not forget DOGE, will certainly make it fascinating…no matter which side of the political fence you live. Remember, I write “speculative” fiction, so stay tuned…anything is possible!

Movieland is still in the Midst

I had my first experience on a movie set…actually, it was at my home. Film students from the Ringling College of Art & Design in Sarasota took over the house for two days to film their Junior project. It was a successful event, and I picked up a lot of insights. I look forward to seeing the completed film in April. Inside secret…a Vampire lives here!

As far as my movie, Climatized, the light at the end of the tunnel is shining a little brighter. Our director, Sean McNamara, had outstanding success at the box office for his movie Reagan raking in $30 million plus. Thanks to Noam Dromi, Evan Greene, and Ren Trella, the Climatized script is finished. Our producer, Stuart Pollok, is in a series of talks to finalize the financing…the last major step before our team begins casting. Rumor has it that some major actors are waiting in the wings!

In addition, Noam Dromi and I are collaborating on a project to bring The Simon Hall novels to your living room in a new TV Series.

Lastly, thank you for following my Newsletters. As things move forward in both the Book and Movie worlds, I will have many more interesting things to share. In the meantime, I wish all of you and your family a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year! And that’s a Wrap!

Please remember, all reviews are more than welcome!

HAPPENINGS FROM THE WRITING CAVE IN JUNE

It has been one year since my last newsletter. And it has been one year riddled with life-changing, actually shattering events.

On December 6, 2023,  Joe Fernandez, my beloved husband, best friend and soulmate passed away unexpectedly. Those who had the great fortune of knowing him found him amazing in so many regards. He was brilliant, kind, and strong, able to overcome any adversity. For the past few years, he dealt with a fluke fall prompting brain surgery, another accidental fall causing a hip fracture, and the double-dose of anesthesia due to the surgeries accentuated the beginning traces of dementia. Each event took its toll. Then last December, Joe fell and fractured his hip again requiring bedrest for an indefinite time. All the signs pointed to the realization that this was the beginning to an end. Within days he died.

Throughout the years, I often wondered whether it were possible for a person to will themself to die. Pondering the question further, I discovered that there actually is a condition known as psychogenic death. The clinical definition is a condition where a person’s mental state becomes so overwhelmed by trauma, stress, or hopelessness that they lose the will to live…where the person’s physical health rapidly deteriorates, and death becomes inevitable.

I wondered whether Joe had such ability because in addition to his attributes, he was an incredibly independent and proud man. And before the accidental fall three years ago, he was amazingly healthy. However, as his health deteriorated, he detested the care he required from others. As he became less mobile, he detested the care he required from me. Daily he would rebuke my efforts. My retort was always, “If the roles were reversed you would do the same. Now quit complaining.” I offered a wink to lighten his mood. Always, he smiled back and said, “I love you.” But the trademark twinkle in his eyes shined with less sparkle. It hurt terribly, knowing what this dignified man had to endure. In my heart I know the answer to the question I pondered.

Grief is like living two lives, one is where you pretend that everything is alright, and the other is where your heart silently screams in pain. This quote has no attribution, but speaks to my existence for the past six months. While I’ve managed to busy myself by finishing the remodel of our home, planning Joe’s Celebration of Life, and managing a plethora of activities with legal and financial implications…it has not been without those silent screams. While I miss him terribly, I hate all that he will miss; our home we planned together, a book we collaborated on together, a movie we were making together. But in my time of grief, I realized that the best way to honor Joe’s memory is to finish what the two of us started.

I mentioned in my last newsletter that The Infiltrator’s Shadow is ninety-five percent finished and that it will need a bit of tweaking due to the every-changing geo-political landscape. While it is still sitting on the proverbial shelf, I need to switch gears and start writing again. The one thing I will need to change… is the dedication.

Climatized, the movie, has a director! Sean McNamara, who just finished his film Reagan, starring Dennis Quaid and Jon Voight, also worked with my Producer, Stuart Pollok, on Soul Surfer, among others. Noam Dromi and Evan Greene, my screenwriters, have finished an amazing script. So as Hollywood continues to slog along, I’m confident this film will be made. I know my team will pull out all the stops to make Joe’s dream come true.

To do the useful thing,

To say the courageous thing,

To contemplate the beautiful thing: That is enough for one man’s life.
T.S. Eliot

HAPPENINGS FROM THE WRITING CAVE IN JUNE

“I only achieve simplicity with enormous effort.” Clarice Lispector

My insanity has risen to the fore, embroiling me in a construction project to transform our home. The hope is to accommodate our ever-changing lifestyle into one of simplicity. What I underestimated was the enormous effort it would take. Ten months in, we are finally in the home stretch, but still with a few months ahead. We are looking forward to a completion date in November.

However, in an effort to make life simpler and more enjoyable for my husband and myself, things quickly became more complicated.  Most of my efforts are involved with the myriad of subcontractors that find their way in and out of our property daily. There always seems to be an issue to tackle or a decision to make, whether it is with the superintendent, the architect, the builder, framers, drywallers, painters, cabinet designers, plumbers, electricians, tile and floor installers, landscapers, fence designers, and unbelievably the list goes on. It is important to note that thus far there have been very few glitches. I’ve been told by friends who have entered the world of construction…that’s unheard of! So, while I’m overwhelmed with the responsibility, I’m feeling blessed at the same time.

Unfortunately, through it all, my business and writing endeavors have taken a temporary backseat.

The Infiltrator’s Shadow is ninety-five percent finished, as I mentioned in an earlier newsletter, and will need a bit of tweaking due to the ever-changing geo-political landscape and my delay in publication.

Climatized, the film project is still taking shape in the right direction, with my team and a potential director fine-tuning the script…ironically, caused by the same political drumbeats.

So, at this juncture, I thought it was an apropos time to give all of you a Summer Break from my lengthy updates. Enjoy your fun in the sun and time with family and friends…but don’t forget to curl up with a good book from time to time.

Might I suggest these great beach reads, or great reads wherever you find solitude.

HAPPENINGS FROM THE WRITING CAVE IN MAY

From Conspiracy to the Headlines!

Three years ago, I began The Infiltrator’s Shadow,  the explosive conclusion of the Max Ford Thriller series, where Max finds herself caught up in a plot that will shatter America’s democracy forever. Time is not on her side.

A global pandemic, oil embargoes, Middle East peace on the table, anarchy in the streets, and a US presidential election campaign weighing in the balance became the perfect storm—except the American citizens were drifting in different boats—and in different directions.

The Infiltrator’s Shadow shines a light on the America that is no longer the superpower she once was. Europe has voiced their independence. The president of China has pledged to go carbon neutral and foster a new era of international relations for equity and justice—but on their own terms. The Russian president continues to saber rattle some and invade others in its quest to rebuild its Soviet Russia. India slowly surrenders to the Consortium’s doctrine for fear of standing alone.  Amid it all, Max must expose the fallacies of this one-world government against unbeatable odds.

Quoting Pope John Paul II, “By the end of this decade we will live under the first One World Government that has ever existed in the society of nations…a government with absolute authority to decide the basic issues of human survival. One world government is inevitable.”

Or is it?

The back cover description above was written two years ago. Sound familiar?

Fifteen years ago, when I began my writing career, I feverishly published a book a year. And in every case, many of my conspiratorial theories entwined in my storylines, became major headlines shortly thereafter. Apparently, my approach or as some have called my “speculative fiction” still rings true, as you may have noted in my back cover description. The Infiltrator’s Shadow now presents a daunting challenge.

Due to life’s delays I’m forced to rewrite many of the chapters, trading in certain facts for others. Although much has occurred in our geo-political landscape, the plotline is still strong and plays out from beginning to end. However, the factual threads weaved throughout the chapters will need to be tweaked.

Take this special opportunity to read the first two chapters of the unpublished version of The Infiltrator’s Shadow; Chapter One: Ground Zero, and Chapter Two Market Day. These are a few examples of where my plotline went FromConspiracy to the Headlines!

Hope you enjoy the read! And remember they will be tweaked!

Postscript: Apologies for missing the April Newsletter. But that time it was not about having nothing to say but had everything to do with having no time to say it!

But here is a fun fact! Note the Pine Tree on the top of the tower! It is to commemorate the “Topping Off” as the last piece of structure in our remodel is put in place. It’s also been said that when all the pine needles dry and fall off it indicates to the builder that the wood inside has cured and is ready for the drywall.

Naturally, I’m watching every single needle!

HAPPENINGS FROM THE WRITING CAVE IN MARCH

  True Confessions!
I’ve been writing novels since 2007and never once have I had the
dreaded WRITER’S BLOCK.
March 2023 it happened!

No excuses. But perhaps it has something to do with living temporarily in a condo in a makeshift office while managing a major renovation of our home a few blocks away, and various other business obligations. The home renovation itself has been the biggest time consumer. I may have mentioned this before but we are literally building an entire second floor with a new bedroom, office, bathrooms, great room with wet bar kitchen, and elevator. It’s discombobulating, to say the least. Even more so for Joe, my dear devoted husband who is recovering from recent hip surgery and brain surgery the year before. However, he’s been amazing throughout and there are days when I think he weathers the construction chaos better than myself.

So, I admit I am fallible and offer sincere apologies to all readers, avid fans, and subscribers, for my inability to craft something more poignant or interesting about the life of a writer…WRITING!

Hopefully, April will be full of interesting updates about the next book, The Infiltrator’s Shadow, the film, Climatized, and related activities surrounding my political thriller genre.

There is one thing, however, that each of you can help me with to jazz up the monthly Newsletter! Periodically, send me a question you’d like me to answer. I’ll include one or two, identifying you by first name and State, unless you request otherwise. Let’s title the section…Because You Asked…

To all loyal fans, I thank you for indulging me and for following my activities.

Please remember, all reviews are more than welcome!

HAPPENINGS FROM THE WRITING CAVE IN FEBRUARY

I know my newsletter is a tad late, but I’ve been stunned by last week’s news cycle that was entirely tied up in a bubble in the sky, referred to as a Chinese Spy Balloon and most recently an Object! We watched, we listened, but then we realized as crazy as things appeared, the responses were even crazier.

Ultimately, the conversation shifted to one of importance; love of country and protecting its sovereignty. So, no it wasn’t a bird, nor a plane, but it could have been much more diabolical, and the government waited much too long to find out, and they still don’t really know or at least they are not telling us.

However, last week’s activities had me longing for often-had discussions with a group of amazing men who would have had the answer. These are the men behind Climatized.  This is not a plug for the book but a glimpse of why these men would have known exactly what that Object was and what was its intent!

Unlike my other novels, I altered my style in Climatized, pairing my fictional scientists with real-life experts. Dennis Avery was the bestselling NYT co-author of Unstoppable Global Warming: Every 1,500 Years, Dr. Harold Doiron, was the Chairman of The Right Climate Stuff research team and NASA Apollo Space Mission veteran, and Tom Wysmuller was also a veteran of the Apollo Space Mission and a leading expert on Sea Level rise. These men became my real characters in my storyline.

Now here’s where it gets interesting. I researched the legal ramifications of using real-life characters in this manner and discovered that if I don’t impugn or misquote them in any way, I was within my legal rights as an author—but it didn’t feel right—and it certainly was not the courteous thing to do without first notifying them. So, after the manuscript was completed, I set out to make contact and to explain what I had done.

A friend who had worked with Dennis, agreed to pass along the manuscript to him, so that was easy. But what was unexpected was to receive a phone call at our home in Italy a few weeks later. Dennis’ first statement from miles away in Virginia, was that I had accomplished what no other human being in the western world has been able to express. Then, he proceeded to read aloud an outstanding review he had written. At that point the twists and turns became cartwheels.

Admittedly at that juncture, I was feeling overconfident. So, I stepped up the ante and took an astronomical leap. I decided to contact my NASA guys. To my delight, Hal and Tom responded and asked to review the manuscript to check for scientific accuracy. I wasn’t the least bit deterred by the challenge because it was imperative that the science be factual and that the storyline be plausible. In the end, it turned out to be a remarkable collaboration. From the meticulous details, explanations, suggestions, and corrections, it was clear they had devoted the time and interest to read the manuscript thoroughly. Their feedback has also greatly added to my understanding of the climate change debate we still face today.

Dedicated to getting it right, and willing to accept the support of these scientific minds, has paid off from a growing list of endorsements. Hal wrote an amazing review that became the Foreword for the book, and reviews were crafted by Jay Lehr the Science Director at The Heartland Institute and Laurence Gould, Physics Professor at the University of Hartford, to name a few.

I’m very proud of the work and the results that spawned the writing of Climatized because climate change has become a topic up there with religion and politics that creates not only heated conversations, but much confusion. I believe Climatized puts to rest much of the confusion and shines a light on the real science, returning the discussion to the dining room table. Most important, were the indelible friendships I had made. Sadly, four of these amazing men have returned to the heavens they studied so well and now they look out for us from above.

These dear friends remind me of a Hemingway quote…

May they rest in Peace: Hal Doiron (1941-2020), Dennis Avery (1936-2020), Tom Wysmuller (1944-2021), Jay Lehr (1938-2023)
