Greyhound

My Monday movies series continues–and I hope to expand the blog to other topics, but I’m doing a second draft of Much Ado About Barbecue, so I’m not quite to regular blogging. Do get ready for a book about warring barbecue houses, though. Estimated release date in early September!

On to Greyhound–and, yes, there will be a spoiler or two. Before I start this post, you need to understand that war pictures are not my jam. Dunkirk, Hacksaw Ridge, 1917. There are all fairly recent films I watched ...

The Invisible Man

Continuing with Movie Mondays, let’s have a chat about The Invisible Man. There may be a few spoilers in here, so consider yourself warned even if I don’t think anything I’ve added here takes away from enjoying the movie.

I’m not the biggest fan of horror, but I can appreciate a movie that’s well made, and this is a well-made film. Performances, music, camera shots, premise–all work together to create a compelling story. I did gasp a couple of times.

Elizabeth Moss acts her ass off. A good...

Mank

As I ease back into blogging, I’m going to start a series called Movie Monday because, well, we watch a lot of movies. And I always have thoughts. For my inaugural Movie Monday post, I’m going to tackle Mank, an Oscar hopeful.

The movie centers on Herman Mankiewicz, a screenwriter, as he struggles to finish Citizen Kane in a timely fashion for Orson Welles. The film goes back and forth between Mank’s writing the screenplay and flashbacks that inspired the story behind it. Here’s the thing: if...

This We Do Not Know

I think one of the most 2020 things to ever 2020 is that I want to resurrect my blog, but I’m not sure what to say. I both have too much and too little. After all, I’ve all lived through a pandemic, two hospital visits for my father, one for my father-in-law, a senior who didn’t get to go to college, a freshman who’s grinding through remote learning in spite of ADHD, a husband who weathered layoffs, a contentious presidential election, murder hornets, too many celebrity deaths to count, and havi...

Sale on E Version of Better Get to Livin’!

On sale!

Y’all. Methinks this is the first time the e version of Better Get to Livin’ has been on sale. $4.99 on all platforms.

Long blurb:

Smart, witty, and delightfully offbeat, this new novel from the author of The Happy Hour Choir and Bittersweet Creek is an uplifting story about following your heart, even when it leads to the last place you’d expect…

Presley Cline has put aside dreams of Hollywood stardom and come back to Ellery, Tennessee, to work in a beauty shop. In truth, the dreams...

Why I Love Book Clubs

Last Wednesday through last Monday were some very busy days. On Wednesday, I spoke to a fifth grade class, and we’ll get back to them in a minute. Thursday I met with the Chestnut Ridge Lunch Bunch for lunch then I was lucky enough to be the first selection for the Love Our Readers Book Club that met at Foxtale Book Shoppe that evening. On Monday, I got to meet with the No-Name Book Club–although I’m lobbying hard for them to become the Happy Hour Book Club. I’m looking forward to the Barbara...

Excerpt from Bless Her Heart

Today seems like the perfect day to give you a tiny taste of Bless Her Heart, my novel that will come out on Halloween 2017. This snippet of a scene–which may be altered by the time you get the book–takes place on Ash Wednesday. Posey Love’s husband, Chad, has left her for another woman. Even worse, he’s left her destitute. After years of sacrificing for him and the fledgling ministry he created, she’s decided to make a rather unorthodox decision.

By this point in the Ash Wednesday service t...

2016 Oscar Movies

Once again, The Mister and I watched all of the Best Picture nominees and quite a few other nominees. I haven’t forgotten that I owe y’all–and myself–some of the 2015 movies that got snubbed. I will get there. Eventually.

Heck, I’m running late with this post. I’m going to write about my picks only hours before the actual ceremony. As I mulled over this year’s nominees, I realized I probably needed to come up with some criteria for what I think the Best Picture winner should have. For now, I’...
