The Story Behind Hello, World!

In April of this year I received an email from Don Chamberlin. He is the co-creator of SQL. In 1974, he and his best friend Raymond Boyce presented the language they had built together at a conference in Ann Arbor. Within thirty days, Boyce was dead. He was twenty-seven. Chamberlin kept building.

Half a century later he read the chapter I had written about his friend.
