It Ain't Your Parents' Public Library Anymore
I devote a few blogs to write about the state of the public library system in the U.S. I'm not a library professional, just a frequent patron (and taxpayer). So, my thoughts are coming from that angle.
As the economic drag grinds on, I see fewer and fewer new books on the display shelf. This is worrisome. I read where NYC has stopped buying books altogether. Other hard-hit areas are even more strapped for funds and closing branches. So, is the mission of the public library shifting?
Patrons use the computers a lot at our library. The computer users' ages vary. Maybe they check their emails. Maybe they do their job research. Maybe the kids are doing their homework. But I can see an enormous need for the computers. Can everybody can afford to buy a laptop?
I see this e-book paradigm emerging in the libraries like with Overdrive. I wonder if libraries seeking cheaper alternatives to the paper books will sign on for the e-books. Does anybody really have a clear, accurate vision where this e-book evolution will go?
Genealogy is a big ado. Many library websites give the links to genealogical resources. In fact, my cousin Chuck runs www.lynskey.com. I'm not sure if any royalty courses in our family's Irish blood, but you just never know. Chuck will keep us apprised.
