Tossing My Salads With Some Pizzazz

Don't worry. This isn't suddenly a foodie weblog, or a plug for the latest fad diet. Since I have a sedentary job, my weight ballooned up by a few pounds each passing year. Yeah, it's an old story. Anyway, my doc at my annual check up told me I was "obese." My cholesterol had shot through the roof. Man, that was tough news to hear.

Understand I'm not singing the praises of diets. See, I love my burgers, shakes, and fries as much as the next guy does. Still do. Crave them. But as these things often work out (i.e., I'm married), I took the healthy path and shed 40 pounds, even if grudgingly. But a leaner, meaner writer makes for a more productive writer.

So: I looked around for ways to make my new diet fun. That's when I began experimenting with salads containing lots of different veggies, fruits, and nuts. I always liked the way those foods tasted, and it wasn't difficult to make the switch.

What pleasantly surprised me was salads don't have to be your boring generic iceberg lettuce and Kraft dressing "rabbit food" type. Jazzing them up with the other fixings makes them more tasty, and fun, to eat. So far, I've kept off the 40 pounds.

And I still miss my burgers, fries, and shakes.
