Devon is a novelist from Durham, North Carolina. She grew up in metro-Detroit in an enormous extended family and was an artist as soon as she could hold a crayon. She put together her first book–with packing tape, cardboard and wrapping paper–in her aunt’s magical bedroom full of bookshelves and a roll-top desk. It's my favorite thing. I want to do it all life long, and I plan to. I guess this is just another way of saying that the best thing about being a writer is getting to love my job. I also love it when I am able to scoop other artistic endeavors into the writing field, like illustrating, cooking, etc. I will love it, too, if writing facilitates travel, which I hope one day it will.(less)

Multi-Book Review: March 2026

I normally do a separate book review for the books we read in the bookshop’s club (since I will be leading discussion and it helps me think through my impressions and opinions of a book), but I didn’t get around to this one—There Are Rivers in the Sky by Elif Shafak—in March. (I have already written my review of April’s book, Tell Me Everything by Elizabeth Strout. Spoiler: didn’t like it

“You stupid cow!” He laughed at her behind those icicle eyes. “You really think anyone is better than you? Everyone’s a thief, woman! Waiting for the next terrible thing to do to get ahead of their neighbor. Forty of us around a table weren’t enough to convince you of that?”
Devon Trevarrow Flaherty, The Night of One Hundred Thieves

“The question hung unfinished between them, stretched over the desert, emblazoned like a sword that pierced through his heart, through her heart, and out like a bloodied ship mast rising on sandy waves.”
