As well, it demonstrates the importance of the energy level and implication of the writer.
Sitting down in front of your laptop again! No inspiration to write! Get concrete. It doesn’t matter what you write. The crux of the matter is just to write. Let’s dress a ‘babe’, your protagonist, for a tango outing.
Some people say, ‘you are what you eat’. I ‘dunno’ about that. I love writing about food. I get the writer’s ‘munchies’ just thinking about it. Hey, focus on one thing at a time. Eating and food occupy the topic for another day.
Dressing people makes them cool. I had kids and never had any spare ‘moolah’ for clothing. I think that is why I love dressing my characters. What I can’t easily explain is why I love dressing women in my books. I don’t know. People just don’t make the grade when it comes to clothes, but creating a svelte, willowy woman who turns heads as she glides across a tango floor turns me on.
When I taught, I always thought if I feel bored, my students must be bored stiff. The same principle applies to writers. When you write focus on the stuff, you love first. The more challenging, less clear aspects of your work will fall into place as your muse takes over. So, now I have to find some things I love. I don’t know about you but I am 50 % voyeur. Beautiful women turn me on. You don’t have to be a man to say that. Do you know how many women read Cosmopolitan Magazine? I don’t, but I do know that many women read it. Guess what! The ‘mag’ is chock full of gorgeous women.
Let’s go to it! The scene is a tango ballroom in Buenos Aires. Your character needs to make an impression. My fingers are tingling just thinking about it. First, those black stilettos, tall heels, reaching up and double-strapped around the ankles under calves coated in slinky, silver-flecked, black metallic nylons.
You got the idea. Too many ‘how-to manuals’ for writers tell you to make lists of clothes for your characters. What could be drearier than making lists? Writing the stiletto stuff made me ‘hot’. Heat communicates. You are pumping up the creative juices. That’s the trick. It doesn’t matter if you ever use the scene. What does matter? You are on the way to 1000 words and having fun. A writer enjoying his craft will communicate his pleasure, in this case sensuous pleasure, to his readers.

“In Ireland, you go to someone's house, and she asks you if you want a cup of tea. You say no, thank you, you're really just fine. She asks if you're sure. You say of course you're sure, really, you don't need a thing. Except they pronounce it ting. You don't need a ting. Well, she says then, I was going to get myself some anyway, so it would be no trouble. Ah, you say, well, if you were going to get yourself some, I wouldn't mind a spot of tea, at that, so long as it's no trouble and I can give you a hand in the kitchen. Then you go through the whole thing all over again until you both end up in the kitchen drinking tea and chatting.

In America, someone asks you if you want a cup of tea, you say no, and then you don't get any damned tea.

I liked the Irish way better.”
