This Shouldn’t Be Happening By Jen Grow Witness Magazine

“Survival demands change, and I believed that my future-changed-self was somewhere in those woods where trees are unbothered by heartache. I wanted to be like the trees: to stand tall, rooted in the ground, and convert sunlight into strength. I wanted the strength to overcome.”

I’m thrilled to have new work in Lines + Stars, technically closing out 2024 but here we are in the future (star).

The latest issue, “In the Blood” – features poems of parentage/parenting; breakage and connection; and histories expansive, intricate, and entrenched. I’m amongst Ana Preger Hart, Joellen Craft, and Jim Daniels (who I first heard + met a couple months ago at a reading in Gettysburg!).

My new poem is part of some exploring I’ve been doing the last few years of the outdoors + childhood memory. Maybe trail running is seeping into more of my creative work.

Thank you Rachel <3

“Her topics range from living with chronic illness in a world that doesn’t tolerate, being queer in a society that is increasingly vocal about its hate, to feminist rage against patriarchy, to critiquing capitalism and its way of commodifying our lives and talents. Every single poem here is a little gift, a gem of compassion.”

Thank you Susan Darraj for highlighting EMOTION INDUSTRY as one of her favorite books of the year for the Johns Hopkins blog. What a special end of year surprise, & what company.

You can order my book from Barrelhouse or Bookshop ✨

Furthermore whoever removed the audio jack from phones should be grilled in front of congress. The fact that I need a dongle to listen to music on a modern telephone while 20 years ago I could have simply plugged a universally standardized cord into the audio jack everyone knew how to use is an anti-human move that should be punished.
