J.B. Cameron's Blog

December 12, 2018

So long and thanks for all the reviews

This is the final post I'll be making before this site disappears.

After building up my name brand for the past five years, it has recently come to my attention that someone name "JB Cameron" (without the periods) has published a book on Amazon. Naturally, this is getting lumped into my "J.B. Cameron" brand, putting all of my efforts since publishing into question.

I'm cleaning the slate. Unpublishing everything I can and dropping social media entirely. I'll still be writing SurvivorZ on Wattpad, and expect to one day finish my Reading The Dead series. Perhaps you'll see it again in its entirety, should a proper publisher decide to pick it up. Until then, if you haven't grabbed a copy already, you'd best start checking the pirate sites, as that'll soon be the only place you can find it.

I'll always enjoy writing. Publishing, however, is another matter entirely. Sometimes I feel as though I don't have any teeth left, after being kicked in the face for so long. After five years, I can honestly say that the money invested in marketing and other publishing endeavors have more than proven the experience isn't worth the aggrivation.

I suspect this message will go on deaf ears, as this blog seems to have gone essentially unnoticed for a while now. If by chance you happen to see this and you're a writer, heed my warning: don't take your pen name for granted. People looking to exploit your success, however limited it may be, have muddied the publishing waters for years, and they're only growing bolder and more greedy.

If you happen across my books on a site like Goodreads, know that I was the author responsible for the Reading The Dead series, the Magpie & Jynx series, Nightfall, and Flights of Fancy: The Great Atlantic Run. Any other books you might find lumped under my defunct profile are the works of others and are probably not even legitimate, so beware.

Best of luck, and shop wisely... especially when purchasing an ebook from Amazon. The internet is chock full of scammers these days. That's why I'm pulling up stakes and calling it quits.

Signing off,
J.B. Cameron (the real one)

If Amazon Ran All Their Companies With The Same "Algorithms"

It's no surprise that Hades, Incorporated... I mean, Amazon, has their fingers stuck in more pies than a busload of ill-mannered fat kids at a bake sale. Ask almost any indie author and they'll tell you - it shows. The number of plates they're juggling on their book site alone is responsible for books disappearing from author pages, the unwarranted deletion of reviews, and the head-scratchingly awful auto-assignment of book genres that completely ignore all user settings from KDP. There's only so much blame one can place on "algorithms" before the question of human incompetence tends to rear its ugly head.

For the sake of everyone's sanity, let's hope that Amazon's overpriced new headquarters don't become ground zero of a purchasing apocalypse, following the incorporation of these same "algorithms" into their other product lines. Otherwise...

Amazon Publishing, responsible for publishing and translating books, will begin publishing each chapter in a different language, after their algorithms realize they can appeal to a greater international market that way. Also, random indie books will be missing climaxes or possibly have them appear before the Table of Contents. Because, in algorithm parlance, indies suck and need Amazon's help.

Goodreads will become even more of a black hole of author hatred than it is already, once algorithms tie Amazon forum posts to its back end. Reviews will disappear and reappear at random, or be shuffled to groups with less than five members. Any mention of indie books that aren't part of the Amazon Best Sellers list will be automatically pruned from the system, or shuffled to those same low-member groups.

Kindle will be the one ring to rule them all. Once Amazon can buy out Google, any websites mentioning Kobo will automatically redirect you to the Kindle purchasing page.

Amazon Web Services, Cloud, Drive: If you give your data to Amazon, expect algorithms to treat it with all the respect of a two-dollar hooker at a bachelor party. It's not like it belongs to you anymore.

Amazon Prime, Prime Now, Fresh, Pillpack, Shopbop, etc. : Why do you think Amazon is interested in completely automated delivery systems? When was the last time you saw a drone standing around getting reamed out after dropping off stale burgers or crushed packages?

Amazon Prime Video, Studios: Algorithms will realize the need to create a "Superprime" standard. Viewers who pay extra for this model will be able to watch their favorite TV shows and movies uncut and censor free. Everyone else can expect more ads appearing onscreen, pixellation, audio censoring, and randomly deleted episodes or shuffled scenes. Especially for those nasty indie movies, because indies suck and need Amazon's help.

Amazon Music, Game Studio: See reference to "Superprime" model. (Honestly, customers, you get what you pay for...)

IMDB: Only major blockbusters will be promoted on this site. Every other movie will be shuffled off to a low-member group on Goodreads.

Amazon Alexa, Echo will be enhanced with AWS GovCloud connectivity. Superprime members will receive unparalleled convenience. Spy on your neighbors from the comfort of your sofa with 4K satellite surveillance (4K TV available on Amazon). Be the first on your block to usher in World War III with, "Alexa, Nuke China" (Use not recommended). Start practicising your grovelling now, in preparation for the day your Amazon Algorithm overlords sieze control. All Hail, Goddess Alexa! Long may she reign!

(We apologize for the above post. A stray Amazon algorithm found its way into Google blogger. Rest assured, those responsible for internet security have been sacked and are now working for Amazon Flex.)
